 Running Springs Forward With More Than 100 Grand 2006 WRR Spring Runner Rankings By James Moreland July/August 2006 Washington Running Report
It's a Miracle
That's right, folks. There were more than 100,000 runners in
the more than 200 races run in this shortest of ranking
periods. More than 25,000 runners raced compared to last spring
and nearly three times as many runners as last winter. Not
surprisingly, this netted the lowest percentage of ranked
runners (2.8%). There were more than 100 more ranked runner
times than any previous period. A lot of the huge numbers came
from 16,500 finishers at the Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10K and
the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Miler with 10,600 finishers. Thirty-seven races were major races (500 or more finishers),
twice the number of the winter. There were 27 10Ks dominated by
seven major races, with six having more than 50 ranked runners.
Competition was fiercest in April with Pike's Peek and then
Sallie Mae leading the way with 6.21% and 5.69% of the runners
ranked. Pike's Peek had 147 ranked runners. Of the seven 10
milers, three were major. Granddaddy Cherry Blossom had the
most ranked runners with 247. Of the thirteen 8K/5M races, the
two early season ones were the biggest. The St. Patrick's Day
8K (this was the first year at this distance for the former
10K) took top honors easily, and was 50% larger than the
Shamrock 8K. The new 8K had the third largest group of ranked
runners with 129. Of the eight spring marathons, three were major races. The
Shamrock Festival led the way by tradition but both Frederick
and Lower Potomac had a higher percentage of ranked times. The
eight half marathons, four major, drew a lot of runners but had
comparatively low percentages of the elite runners. With only
71 days in the period, it seems it should be easy to find a 5K.
There were 111 of them. Washington, DC was slightly more race-friendly this period
having 20 races with half of them being major. Maryland had 65
races with the largest groups being in Baltimore, Frederick,
and Columbia. The larger state of Virginia had the rest, more
than 100 races, with major concentrations in Norfolk, Virginia
Beach, and Richmond. 926 different men and 854 different women ran at least one
qualifying time.
343 men and 251 women were ranked, the highest numbers ever.
The women's numbers dominated the Open (76), sub master, and
the 40-44 division (46). Twenty-seven runners migrated from
other divisions to the Open Division. The men's numbers were
stronger in every other division, especially the always full 60-
64 division (46). Only the Open division (54), which included
13 double dippers from other divisions, was larger. Runners who win the race or win their division in a race earn
an asterisk beside their name. Open runners only get an
asterisk for an overall win. The Speed Alone (at the top of
each division) is the fastest qualifying time run for each
division. In red, it means the division champion ran it. Now let's see who made the top.
