 Largest Ranking Period Has 106,000 Participants 2007 WRR Spring Runner Rankings By James Moreland July/August 2007 For the Washington Running Report
Only the strong survive
Again the record is set with more runners than ever. Many of
the big races are closing out months ahead of time. Ukrop's
Monument Avenue 10K added four thousand more runners to become
the largest race of the period. Thirty-one races had more than
500 runners; 23 had more than 1,100 finishers. As usual, Credit
Union Cherry Blossom had the most ranked times with 355.
Speaking of (Route) 355, DARCARS Pike's Peek, with one-ninth as
many runners as Ukrop's, still had more ranked times with 222
vs. 210. The GW Parkway Classic 10 Mile had nearly 100 ranked runners.
The Shamrock Sports Festival had nearly 10,000 finishers in its
three races, including the biggest marathon and half marathon
as well as the second largest 8K. The St. Patrick's Day 8K
remains the king of the 8K races. For the 10K, Capitol Hill and Sallie Mae stayed third and
fourth in size. The new Battle of the Boulevards 10K made a
splash, surpassing the Carytown and Apple Blossom in the top
10Ks with 1,000 finishers. The Bay Bridge had its fourth
cancellation in six years. Even with 116 of the 188 races used being 5Ks, they did not
dominate the rankings. Only four had more than 15 qualifiers.
The largest race, the Daisy Dash, was really closer to three
miles and, like the Race for the Cure in June, had many non-
competitive finishers. The Scope It Out 5K, run in March, was
the most competitive. In May, the Race for Hope was the leader,
followed by the Richmond Race for the Cure. One thousand ninety-eight different men and 798 different women
ran at least one qualifying time. Three hundred forty-one men
and 275 women were ranked, the highest number ever for women.
The women's numbers dominated the Open (71) and the 40-44
division (41). Thirty-one women runners migrated from other
divisions to the Open Division. The men's numbers were stronger
in every other division, with a surge from the teen division
(41). Only the Open division (59), which included 15 double
dippers from other divisions, was larger. Runners who win the race or win their division in a race earn
an asterisk beside their name. Open runners only get an
asterisk for an overall win. The Speed Alone (reported at the
top of each division) is the fastest qualifying time run for
each division. In Bold, it means the division champion
ran it. Now let's see who made the top.
