 Hundreds of Races, Thousands of Runners 2007 WRR Summer Rankings (May 26, 2007 through September 3, 2007) By James Moreland November/December 2007 For the Washington Running Report
Every year the racing seasons have more races and more runners.
This summer there were 243 races with more than 77, 000 runners
running a record 3,548 ranked times. With no school during the
summer, teens showed up in much greater numbers. More than 120
teens from both sexes earned rankings with easily twice as many
having at least one qualifying time.
Thirty-six races were major races (500 or more finishers).
Twelve races had more than 50 ranked runners racing in them.
The Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K again dominated the period
with 190 ranked times. This was nearly twice as many as second
place Annapolis 10 Mile with 105 ranked times. The Rock 'n'
Roll HM with 17,000 finishers was twice as large as any other
race and featured 92 elite finishers. The huge Lawyers Have
Heart was the top 10K with 70. If you combine the 10K and 20K
run at Leesburg, you have 114 ranked runners. Of the ten 5Ks
with more than 40 ranked runners, the Race for the Cure was by
far the largest. It was second largest race with 5,112 timed
finishers. The Capital Crescent 5K again, with nearly 20% of
the times ranked, was the top 5K. Not surprisingly, there were
no marathons. The longest race was the rarely run 20 Miler. One thousand three hundred forty-seven different men and 1,643
different women ran at least one qualifying time, with women
taking a significant lead over the men for the first time; 398
men and 310 women were ranked. This period the open divisions were really packed, with 66
women and 62 men. Open of course includes runners of any age
able to meet the open 10K equivalent standard twice: men 34:20
and women 41:15. At 42, John Piggott was the oldest male. The
women had two 49-year-olds, Lee DiPietro and Leisa Ensle.
Teens were well represented, as the men's third ranked runner
was just 18. The women had a 19-year-old as their champion as
well as a 13-year-old in 48th place. Runners who win the race or win their division in a race earn
an asterisk beside their name. Open runners only get an
asterisk for an overall win. The Speed Alone (shown at the top
of each division) is the fastest qualifying time run for that

reported January-February 2008 * Best of 2007, reported March-April 2008 * Winter Runner Rankings, November 19, 2007 through March 8,
