2005 Spring WRR Runner Rankings
Women's Division

Photo above: Emily Richard, age 28 of Washington, DC, is ranked
fifth with her 57:42 performance at the Credit Union Cherry
Blossom 10 Mile.
Open Women
Sallie Mae 10K, 32:31Huge, the Open division is huge, with 63 runners, including
runners from four other divisions. Germantown, MD is flush with
22-year-old Tatyanas. Tatyana Petrova is the number one,
beating Tatyana Chulakh, and everyone else, at Sallie Mae 32:31
to 33:54. The week before the story was same at the Ukrop's
Monument Avenue 10K, albeit a closer finish (32:47 to 33:08).
Last period's champion, Ann McGranahan, made a go at it,
defeating Chulakh at the Shamrock 8K 26:30 to 26:37. At Sallie
Mae she ran 34:12. With no sign of Aurora Scott or Marina Bychkova, Susannah
Kvasnicka might have moved up form last period's three place
ranking. She did all the right things, racing Cherry Blossom in
57:27 and Pike's Peek in 34:39. You can see that each race she
is getting faster. Starting with St. Patrick's in 35:18, she
then dialed up Sallie Mae in 35:11. By the end of the summer,
she may be ready for those sub-34:00 minute 10Ks needed to win
the division. Emily Richard takes fourth over Jill Krebs with her Cherry
Blossom race in 57:42, which is knocking on Kvasnicka's back
door. Krebs ran 58:12. Krebs also owns the fastest 5K so far
this year in 16:57. Anna Pichrtova races out of Waynesboro, VA.
She won the Carytown 10K in 35:02 to stay in contention at
number seven.

Darcars Pike's Peek 10K, 39:08Not sure where the trend is going but Kristin Malloy won the
division with a win on the first weekend and the last weekend
of the period. At the 180s Shamrock 5K in March she ran 19:06.
By May, she lowered it to 18:53 at the BRRC WDF 5K. Emily
Ruppel ran Sallie Mae in 40:24 to join with Kristen Malloy and
Aspen Foster as three teens to make the Open division. Aspen Foster won the Falcon 5K in 19:33. Shannon Ralston had a
big Shamrock 8K ahead of Foster. Karen Dickerson continues to
impress, winning five of the six races she entered.

Photo by Brightroom.com: Diane Haupt of Virginia Beach, VA,
had the best half
marathon in her division; she is ranked fifth.
Capitol Hill Classic 10K, 37:19Denise Knickman races a lot but she seems to do it in spurts.
Of her nine efforts this spring, three were overall wins and
five were age group triumphs. She started the first day of the
period with a St. Patrick's Day 10K win in 38:56 and ended the
last day with a BRRC WDF 5K overall win in 18:11. In between
she won the Ocean City Marathon in 3:07:12 and her Frederick
Marathon just missed in 2:57:51.
Normally these credentials mean a championship. Alisa Harvey's
5K win at GW Parkway in 18:12 is in the neighborhood. The same
May 22nd that Knickman is running her best race, Harvey is
winning the Capitol Hill 10K in 37:19 and absconding with the
division crown. Marjan Huizing's Pike's Peek win in 37:54 easily sets aside
Helen Bevan's 39:20. Beven is now forty and will be looking at
new challenges as a masters division runner.

Photo: Patricia Zerfas of Kensington, MD, is MCRRC's
reigning masters best; she is ranked seventh.
Sallie Mae Fund 10K, 37:22Absent from the last rankings, Maria Spinnler dove into spring
racing with a vengeance. She had the top four times, including
in March the fastest 8K at Shamrock in 29:55 and the best 5K at
the 180's Shamrock in 18:28. Then in April, she polished off
the division with the first local masters award at Sallie Mae
in 37:22. Monica Grillo's second race was a windy Ocean City Marathon way
down the list of top times. Still, she earns the runner-up spot
with her head-to-head win over third place Ellen Fitzgerald and
fourth place Laura Friex at the Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in
64:27. Freix ran 64:44, more than a few spots ahead of
Fitzgerald's 66:18. Fitzgerald still gets the nod as her
Capitol Hill 10K in 38:44 matches exactly Grillo's 10-Mile
equivalent. Leslie Minnix-Wolfe and Vanessa Cox also ran Cherry Blossom
ahead of Fitzgerald and their places match that race. Sometimes
when the times are very close the tiebreaker becomes the most
recent race.

finished the downhill final mile at Pike's Peek 10K. She is

Women 45 - 49
St. Patrick's Day 10K, 38:40Patti Shull is the oldest woman to qualify for the Open
division. She moved quickly to restore order in the division.
In the first race of the period, she easily won the St.
Patrick's Day 10K in 38:40. She capped the division with a May
Day victory at the Cassidy & Pinkard Run for Hope 5K in 18:39. Debbie Flynn earns the deuce with her 40:24 age group delight
at Darcars Pike's Peek 10K and an overall win at the Friends of
Ian 5K in 20:08. Last period's champ, Debi Bernardes, won the
Organ Donor 8K in 33:05. Her other race was the ill-fated
Connect the Dots 5K. Her 21:39 really equates to a 40:16 10K as
the actual race distance was measured at 3.446. Valerie Plyler looks good with three wins, including the 5K
Race for Mental Health in 19:41, a qualifying time for the Open
division. Alison Suckling is next in line. Just months away
from turning fifty, her 41:56 at Pike's Peek has to have women
in that division anxiously looking over their shoulders.

Sallie Mae Fund 10K, 43:08Jenny Rexrode has been everywhere. She ran twelve races,
winning two outright and earning seven more age group wins. She
even upended last period's champion, Betty Blank, at the GW
Parkway 5K. She was just returning the favor as Blank prevailed
at Cherry Blossom earlier in the month, 72:43 to 76:50. Rexrode
gets fourth place. Margaret Starnes had three swift 5Ks,
including the RASAC Mother's Day 5K in 20:46, the fastest of
the year. Blank gets moved back a notch but Starnes is only the runner-
up. Blank's Cherry Blossom was trumped by Naomi Stanford's
division win in 72:27. Stanford cemented the championship by
winning Sallie Mae 10K in 43:08 to Blank's 43:16. Linda Gulick
grabs the five spot with five age group wins, including the

Darcars Pike's Peek 10K, 42:24There was a battle royale for supremacy in the swiftest
grandmaster division. In the first week, Barbara Mathewson
dismissed last period's runner-up, Rose Malloy, with a four
minute shellacking at the Shamrock 8K. That was Mathewson's
worst race. In April, she had the fastest half marathon,
winning the Pomoco in 1:35:05, and a swift Ukrop's 10K in
42:38. The other three of the best six times belonged to Sandy Adams.
She won Cherry Blossom in 71:10 and Apple Blossom in 43:03. The
week before at Pike's Peek she became the champion with her
42:24 10K win. After that it was all Alice Franks. She had the next seven
fastest times and was second to Adams at Cherry Blossom in
74:24 and Pike's Peek in 44:24. The other five races were part
of her six total age group wins.

Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10K, 48:28National class runner Sharon Dolan has moved to Michigan. Let
her decimate them for a while. Now somebody else can win the
division. Last period Janice Stoodley was the champion. Her
only race at Capitol Hill in 48:58 would have made the top spot
even tighter. In the vacuum, Priscila Prunella and Joan Coven made the move.
Both ran good times at major races. In her hometown, Prunella
earns the crown with her Pike's Peek win in 48:28. She tacked
on age group wins at Piece of Cake in 50:42 and Cherry Blossom
in 84:32. Coven made her mark with the second and third fastest
races of the period, Shamrock 8K in 38:50 and Queen's Lake 5K
in 23:57. Dee Nelson has been running a lot of club races, which tend to
be slow and sometimes a little long. She got surprised out of
third place by some major moves from Betty King. King ran the
lesser known Cherry Pit 10 Mile in 85:14 and was second in her
age group at Capitol Hill in 51:35.

Darcars Pike's Peek 10K, 55:38Shirley Wampler has the official Virginia state record for the
10K at 58:07. Tami Graf does most of her running in Maryland
where this year she won the division with 55:38 at Darcars
Pike's Peek. Last year she had three races faster than
Wampler's record - GW Birthday, Run vs. Row, and Leesburg.
Sometimes it takes a while for the paperwork to get through. Meanwhile, her chief competition has been Arlowene Garland.
Garland ran one of the swiftest 5Ks in 27:43 at the Rosner
Shamrock 5K. Graf had too much staying power, running one-sixth
of all the ranked times in her division. She is always at the
big races, running Cherry Blossom in 1:35:15. Wampler is third
winning an age group at the Whistlestop 5K in 28:05

Capitol Hill Classic 10K, 54:16Pat Ewell is used to leading the division. Certainly in
Williamsburg she is the queen. She has the fastest 5K, 5M and
half marathon this year, including seven age group wins. Then
along comes Margery Elliott. She starts the spring with a 59:34
at St. Patrick's crushing all her competition. Then five weeks
later she drops the hammer and runs 54:50 at Sallie Mae. Then
to prove that was no fluke, she pours on an unconscionable
54:16 at Capitol Hill. That is well under the Maryland state
record, leaving only Hedy Marque's 50:29 Virginia state record.

Stupid Little 5K, 37:29 - 10K = 1:18:02Last period, no women were ranked in the division. This
surprised Helen Schley a little because she was racing. She
often ducks into Pennsylvania or West Virginia or goes out west
to a national track meet. This spring she was spotted in
Berryville running the Stupid Little 5K. Martha Trimmer earns
kudos for running eight 5Ks during the period.
