division.
Open Women
Sallie Mae 10K 33:05Can anybody say, "monster division?" Seventy-six runners made
the standard! Mary Kate Bailey of Arlington, VA is a rocket.
She has gone from being an excellent runner to being absolutely
inspired. She started the period with redemption from last
year's St. Patrick's 10K runner-up spot in 35:50. This year she
battled three other elite runners down the final straightaway
at the 8K and won in 27:50 (10K = 35:20). She never looked back
after that, her "worst" effort of the season. The following
week, she barely slowed down the pace, taking all the marbles
at the new Shamrock HM. Last Labor Day, she opened the door
with an 18th overall 1:17:25. This spring she ran 1:15:24 (10K
= 34:04). Then she was ninth overall at Cherry Blossom in 57:07
(10K = 34:19). Still in uncharted waters, she blasted still
another overall win, racing the GW Parkway 10 Mile in 56:24
(10K 33:54). She looked golden. Third place Casey Smith had finished fourth
behind her at St. Patrick's in 28:03 (10K = 35:37) and her
inspired Cherry Blossom in 57:14 (10K 34:24) was just as far
back. Her regular nemesis, Susannah Kvasnicka, was having what
only a top runner could say was a tough spring. She had run the
Shamrock 8K in 28:28 (10K = 36:08). She rebounded in April to
run Pike's Peek in 34:43 for the seventh position. Sixth place Christina Wells had been the closest to Bailey at
St. Patrick's with 27:53 (10K = 35:28), but she faded behind
Smith as well at Cherry Blossom in 57:46 (10K = 34:43). Her
17:00 to 17:10 overall win at Scope It Out 5K against Kvasnicka
got her that spot. Even the three fast times at Shamrock 8K by
Olga Romanov (27:44), Ann McGranahan (27:45), and Cheryl
Anderson (27:46) did not threaten Bailey's placing. Elena
Orlova took the fourth spot at Pike's Peek, running 34:26.
Maria Elana Calle was fifth at the Ukrop's 10K in 34:28. It seemed as if the fast running was done early. Only three of
the top 35 times were run in May. Then, on the cusp of May,
Olga Romanov sped through West Potomac Park and captured the
ranking's championship. Her 33:05 at Sallie Mae was three
seconds from overall victory and nearly a half-mile ahead of
the next qualified runner.

DARCARS Pike's Peek 10K, 38:00Brittney Rooks of Baltimore, MD is not even a teenager yet. At
12 years old she is our youngest division winner, eclipsing the
mark set by Kristen Malloy (14) last period. It was a close
battle with last period's fifth place finisher Brittany Furst
of Bel Air, MD. Both have been overall winners in a 5K race.
Rooks ran the Shamrock 5K in 19:14 (10K = 40:05) to start the
period. Two months later, Furst almost caught her with a 19:15
at the RASAC Mother's Day 5K. In April, Rooks added a 19:28
(10K = 40:32) Victim's Fund Run 5K and an overall win at the
Cherry Pit 10 Mile in 67:35 (10K = 40:37). Furst added her own
overall win at the Mariner's Point 5.4M in 34:46 (10K = 40:36). College Park's Aisling Gardner ran a swift 40:43 at Pike's Peek
for third place. Southern Virginia breeds some great young
female runners such as Aurora Scott, an oft times overall
winner as a teen. Take a look at the three youngsters from
Williamsburg, VA and watch as they climb the rankings. Both Brittney Rooks and Brittany Furst made the Open Division.

DARCARS Pike's Peek 10K, 34:26To reiterate, DARCARS Pike's Peek 10K produced the fastest time
of the period. Elena Orlova of Germantown, MD swept in with
three overall wins. Only one other runner in the top 17
competed with her there. Fifth place Christy Underdonk of
Potomac, MD earned the check mark for fifth place by winning
the division there in 38:18. Orlova was third overall in 34:26.
Two weeks later she met up with Susan Graham-Gray of
Greencastle, PA at the Apple Blossom 10K. Graham-Gray had won
the National Marathon in March with 2:57:05 (10K = 38:04) and
finished second overall at the GW Parkway 10 Mile in April with
59:38 (10K = 35:50). May did not work out as well for Graham-
Gray as Orlova finished second overall in 35:24 while Graham-
Gray won her age group in 37:34, eighth woman. Orlova ran
uncontested to an overall win at the Germantown 5-Miler in
28:21 (10K = 35:45). Meanwhile, third place Hilary Cairns of Washington, DC stayed
at home and sparkled at two 10Ks. In the always-competitive
Sallie Mae, she won her age group in 37:41. In May, she was
second overall at the Capitol Hill 10K, slowing slightly on the
hill to finish in 37:48. Denise Knickman of Baltimore, MD was all over the place. She
was second in her age group at Cherry Blossom in 63:26 (10K =
38:07) for her spot the first week in April. The last weekend
in April she finished in fifth place at the Frederick Marathon
in 3:05:53 (10K = 39:44) right behind Feng Sun who ran 3:01:11
(10K = 38:44) to get sixth place in the rankings. Perhaps
Knickman was still tired as she won the Ocean City Marathon
outright in 3:02:02 (10K = 38:55) on April 8. Twelve runners made the Open division.

Photo by Brightroom.com: Cindy Conant raced the Pike's Peek
10K in 39:36 (2nd place in the 45-49 division); she has to be
considered the favorite as she moves up to the 45-49 ranking
division this summer.Fairfax Corner 5K, 17:25, 10K = 36:16 The Fairfax Corner 5K produced some eye-popping times for many
runners. Alisa Harvey won in 17:25 but then she always produces
great times. In this "you got to play to win" Runner Rankings,
Harvey came out to play. Her four races were the top four times
among the ranked ones. At St. Patrick's Day 8K she ran 29:11
(10K = 37:03) and at the Apple Blossom 10K she ran 37:26.
Still, if she ventures away from her short races to the half
marathon she might find some competition. Megan Burns of
Virginia Beach, VA ran one fine Shamrock HM in 1:22:33 (10K =
37:18). Monica Grillo of Arlington, VA was standing tall at the
Cherry Blossom 10 Mile, finishing third in her age group and
second local finisher behind Christina Morganti's 63:54 (10K =
38:24). Grillo was 64:36 (10K = 38:49). She finished third
overall at the Germantown 5-Miler in 31:45 (10K = 40:02). Now it becomes dicey. The next six runners are a jumble. Linda
Foley, with the top mile and 3K in the area so far this year,
raced the suspiciously fast Fairfax Corner 5K in 18:44 (10K =
39:00) and is set in eighth place. Her next best race was the
GW Parkway 10M in 67:43 (10K = 40:42). Sixth place Rebecca
Nathan ran faster at 65:36 (10K = 39:25). Working backwards,
fifth place goes to Robyn Humphrey for defeating Nathan at
Cherry Blossom 66:26 to 67:11. Humphrey's best race was an
Outback 5K overall win in 18:53 (10K = 39:19). Nine runners made the Open division.

Preakness 5K, 18:45, 10K = 39:02Thirteen of the top 14 times went to the two top women, Win
Persina of Washington, DC and Valerie Plyler of Yorktown, VA.
Both of these continuing-to improve racers won their division
seven times. Neither had to face triathlete Lee DiPietro, who
stopped long enough for one great race at the Preakness. Win's
only non-win was her best race where she ran Sallie Mae in
40:24. She ran into a Russian buzzsaw as Lyubov Kremleva ran
35:12 for fifth overall in that race. With four of the top five
times, including a Race for Hope 5K in 19:32 (10K = 40:40),
and, most recently, the Germantown 5-Miler in 32:16 (10K =
40:41), Persina consistently worked her way to the top. Plyler
ran the always-fast Queen's Lake 5K in 19:33 (10K = 40:42).
Staying close, her May race was the Buckroe Beach Dash 8K in
32:28 (10K = 41:13). Be wary ladies; last period's champion Jill Hargis's only race
was the period's top 10 Mile, Cherry Pit in 67:53 (10K =
40:48). Cindy Conant turned 45 in time for one spectacular
Pike's Peek in 39:36. Three other runners ventured forth with
one race under 41:00. Debbie Flynn of Gaithersburg, MD was again third place. She was
the top local and second age group finisher at the Cherry
Blossom 10 Mile in 68:53 (10K = 41:24) and runner-up at the
Scope It Out 5K in 20:05 (10K = 41:51). Eleanor Kerr of
University Park, MD was fifth at Cherry Blossom in 69:40 (10K =
41:52) for fourth place. Lynda Layson of Severn, MD was the
winner of all three 5Ks she entered, including her best, the
International 5K Run for Celiac Disease, in 20:17 (10K =
42:14). Persina and Plyler made it to the Open division as well.

DARCARS Pike's Peek 10K, 40:44The first week of the period Alison Suckling of Arnold, MD
threw down the gauntlet with a swift 20:05 (10K = 41:49). The
following week Betty Blank cruised south for the Shamrock
Festival and punched out a half marathon in 1:32:33 (10K =
41:49) to match. Take that! Betty Blank stepped up to the plate and swatted the
two fastest 10-milers of the period among her six age group
wins. First, she ran Cherry Blossom in 69:52 (10K = 41:59) for
the fastest 10 mile of the year. Then she popped an even faster
GW Parkway in 69:24 (10K = 41:42). While she was still running,
that very same day Suckling glided down Rockville Pike in 40:44
to win the race and earn the top spot in the division. Nancy Ferris of Goode, VA makes her claim to fame, finishing
second in her age group at the Cherry Blossom in 71:15 (10K =
42:49). She backed that up with the second fastest 5K at
Shamrock Hill in 21:21 (10K = 44:27). Margaret Starnes of
Street, MD is the queen of northeast Maryland. She won the
Mariner's Point 5.4M in 37:51 (10K = 44:13). Traveling to
Timonium for the LEAD Strong HM, she flashed a 1:41:09 (10K =
45:42). Challenging her closely, Amy Subar was fifth, racing
Pike's Peek in 44:47.

division.George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile, 68:38, 10K =
41:15 Last period's champion, Barbara Mathewson, only ran one race, a
swift 5K in 21:34 (10K = 44:54) but it was not even close to
the fastest race. Naomi Stanford of Washington, DC made hash of
the competition, winning the National Half Marathon by nearly a
mile in 1:37:51 (10K = 44:13). Next, she took on the Cherry
Blossom 10 Mile the following week in 71:35 (10K = 43:01). That
should have been enough for the crown. Standing in her way is
the virtually unbeatable Sandra Adams of Winchester, VA. Adams
won the Cherry Blossom in 70:30 (42:22). Then, to show she was
not kidding, she mowed down the competition at the GW Parkway
10 Mile by more than two miles in 68:38 (10K = 41:15). In May,
she "rested" at the Apple Blossom 10K in 42:32, nearly three
minutes ahead of the second fastest 10K of the period. Alice Franks of Rockville, MD continued her winning ways with
four age group triumphs, including Pike's Peek in 45:16. She
held off fourth place Rose Malloy with her third place Cherry
Blossom finish in 1:14:20 (10K = 44:20). Malloy won the
hometown Cherry Pit 10 Mile in 1:14:39 (10K = 44:52), after
returning from a win at the Shamrock 8K in 37:05 (10K = 47:05).

Photo by Brightroom.com: Helen Price finished second in the
Shamrock Half Marathon during the first weekend of the spring
ranking period, and placed second at the Capitol Hill 10K on
the last day for ranking.
Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile, 1:17:45, 10K = 46:43You cannot rest on your laurels in this division. Last period's
top three got unceremoniously dumped back to sixth, seventh,
and eighth places. They all ran very well but the competition
ramped up to an even higher level. The major battleground was
the 10K distance. Christine Craun of Bethesda, MD debuted in
the division, sweeping the big three, Pike's Peek, Sallie Mae,
and Capitol Hill, with the fastest three times after Bridgette
Sutherlin's solo flight at Cherry Blossom. Craun was not far
behind at Cherry Blossom, running 80:50 (10K = 48:35). The only
flaw in her triple crown was that she started late at Pike's
Peek and won her division with the best chip time (46:07). B.J. King of Crofton, MD moved up to the runner-up spot with
the fastest gun time at Pike's Peek in 47:25, just ahead of
Craun's Sallie Mae in 47:28. King won two big races, St.
Patrick's Day 8K in 39:50 (10K = 50:34) and Clyde's 10K in
50:43. She beat hometown rival Meredith Bonta, also of Crofton,
MD, who was third at Pike's Peek in 48:08, though Bonta
returned the favore the following week at the Mt. Hebron Viking
5K in an exciting one second victory at 24:15. In May, Bonta
again won at the 5K, this time by a margin of 50 meters. By the closest of margins, Joan Coven settles into fourth place
with her age group victory at the Shamrock Half Marathon in
1:46:36 (10K = 48:10). The five spot goes to Mary Saunders who
had the fastest 5K at the Vinton Baptist Church Dogwood 5K in
23:18 (10K = 48:31). Nelson (48:49) and Prunella (49:29) earned
their spots at Pike's Peek. Price finished second at the
Shamrock Half Marathon in 1:50:13 (10K = 49:48).

St. Patrick's Day 8K, 39:52, 10K = 50:37Even in five-year age groups, youth prevails. Janice Stoodley
(65) hammered the fastest time of the period for her only race.
Tami Graf was second at the race. April starts with the Cherry
Blossom race, where the fastest come out to play. Graf won a
hard-fought battle with Betty Smith (65) nipping at her heels,
1:33:25 (10K = 56:08) to 1:33:28. After that it was all Smith,
as she toppled the long-time champion in two head-to-head 10Ks,
Pike's Peek and Sallie Mae. Both of these runners voted for
Pike's Peek as the fastest 10K. Smith ran 53:59 to Graf's
55:19. Later in the month, Sallie Mae was 55:32 for Smith and
57:35 for Graf. Arlowene Garland, Graf's long-time nemesis, stayed farther
south this period but produced the fastest 5K for third place.
At the Grace Oughton 5K, she ran 26:57 (10K = 56:07). Louise
Dudley of Charlottesville, VA had two wins, including the
Martha Jefferson 8K in 45:55 (10K = 58:17), that were faster
than five of the nine races by prolific racer Tami Graf. You
know you are doing well when runners are defined by how they
did against you.

DARCARS Pike's Peek 10K, 52:35Margery Elliott of Bethesda, MD ran her solo effort at the
DARCARS Pike's Peek 10K in a well-under-the-state-record 52:35. This period's champion, Betty Dameron of Fredericksburg, VA, is
the youngest of the lot. She got her feet wet at the St.
Patrick's Day 8K, finishing more than two minutes behind soon-
to-be 75 Jacqueline O'Neil of Washington, DC. Later in March,
O'Neil had her best race at the Scope It Out 5K in 34:29 (10K =
1:11:28). In April, Dameron returned the favor, beating O'Neil
at the DARCARS Pike's Pike 10K by a ton, 1:04:19 to 1:19:29.
It was O'Neil's only loss in the rankings. Yvonne Aasen got
underway later in the period, moving into the runner-up spot on
the last weekend. She raced the Gibson Island 5K in 33:41 (10K
= 1:09:47). Note that sometimes with older age groups of 60-99 or 70-99 at
some races, it is harder for these athletes to earn the
asterisk for age group wins.
