For the Washington Running Report

Open Women
Shamrock Festival 8K, 25:58, 10K = 32:58

Slender waif Tatiana Chulakh (24) of Gaithersburg, MD cruised to the Open crown with a powerful spring.

Even with many of the top runners, including three top Russians, taking a powder, the Open Division was again huge with 71 qualifiers. Last period's champion, Maria Elena Calle of Richmond, VA, started things off with a fine Shamrock 8K in 28:08 and she placed eighth in that race. Kerry Meagher of Washington, DC was two places higher, racing 27:30.

A week later the photogenic Tatiana Chulakh of Gaithersburg, MD started her rampage with four overall wins. At the Scope It Out 5K, she held off an out of town challenge with a four-second victory in 16:24. Then in late April, she perfected her tape breaking ceremony with three straight weeks of wins. At the GW Parkway 10 Mile she crushed a strong field with an excellent 55:39. Hirut Mengistu of Washington, DC followed her home in 57:56 to get third place in the rankings. At DARCARS Pike's Peek, she beat all but 25 of the men in a swift 33:18.

Mengistu was two places back, finishing in 34:28. It was not enough to catch Calle who had finished fifth overall at her monster hometown Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10K in 34:23. Chulakh's last effort was Sallie Mae in 34:08. The race was not as competitive as in past years. Three out-of-towners finished in less than 39:00 with only one runner within 200 meters of her.

Even though the Credit Union Cherry Blossom always has the most ranked runners, this year only two of the top ten women raced there. Meagher was tops, running 58:14. Fifth place Laura Turner of Washington, DC put all her eggs in one basket for fourth overall at the Shamrock HM in 1:17:17. Sixth place Aurora Scott of Chesapeake, VA was next, finishing in the runner-up position at the Dismal Swamp HM in 1:17:25.

After that, it was back to DARCARS Pike's Peek where most of the rankings were decided. The next three finished there. Alemgena Desta was 35:01, followed by Melissa Tanner in 35:31, and Teyba Nasir in 35:40. Desta gets the nod even though she lost to Nasir at the GW Parkway 58:58 to 59:41. Nasir's 10K equivalent of 35:26 edges Tanner for the eighth spot. Tanner ran Cherry Blossom in 59:40. Tenth place Briana Whalley of Richmond, VA is a stride off these three, finishing the Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10K in 35:40 and the Shamrock HM in 1:19:04 (10K = 35:44).

19 & Under Women
Dismal Swamp Stomp HM, 1:17:25, 10K = 34:59

Last year's champion, Aurora Scott of Chesapeake, VA, is back and improved her half marathon from last fall at the Dismal Swamp, racing 1:17:25 (10K = 34:59). She added an overall win at the Blair Classic 5K in 17:15 (10K = 35:55). This was slower than normal for her as she chased after the third overall man, beating all the women by three minutes or more. For once, she had some competition. Belaynesh Zemedukin of Washington, DC had two excellent 10Ks. Her DARCARS Pike's Peek 10K was 35:43 and she ran the Apple Blossom 10K in 35:58.

Third place Anya Oleynik of Gaithersburg, MD raced a lot, gathering in nine age group wins, including an overall win at the MCRRC Trolley 5M in 30:22. Her best effort was a ninth overall 10K in 37:04 at Pike's Peek. The Sinclair twins took the fourth and seventh spots, surrounding two of the youngest racers. Halsey won the Azalea Classic overall in 18:46 ahead of Oleynik's 18:53 and sister Ashlyn's 19:53.

Brittney Rooks (13) of Baltimore, MD was injured running the Pike's Peek 10K race (44:18) this year. With her dad Remus Medley, who coaches her and her brother, she was kept centered. After all, she had been the overall winner at the Cherry Pit 10 Mile in 66:40 (10K = 40:04) to earn the sixth spot. Heidi Peterson of Williamsburg, VA, also 13, had three fine 5Ks with her best coming on the last weekend of the period at the Red, White, and Blue 5K in 19:00 (10K = 39:33).

Five of these teens made the Open Division.

35-39 Women
George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile, 59:49, 10K = 35:57

Feng Sun of Columbia, MD is known for her long distance racing. After winning the Annapolis 10 Mile last year and her age group at the Frederick Marathon, she ran two half marathons. First, she ran the National HM in March in a solid fourth overall with 1:25:16, just ahead of Rachel Moritz of Sterling, VA with 1:25:30. Meanwhile, Susan Graham-Gray of Greencastle, PA was second overall at twice the distance with 2:56:00 (10K = 37:37).

Then in May, Sun matched up again with Moritz at the Frederick HM. Both had big improvements, Sun to 1:23:56 for second overall. This time Moritz got the upper hand with an overall win in 1:21:56 (10K = 37:01) getting her the third spot in the division. Sun earned the fifth spot. A week later Maureen Ackerly of Richmond, VA stepped up to the plate with a big time age group win at the Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10K with 36:02, along with a 5K in 18:04 on the 21st of April to match Graham- Gray's marathon. One day later, Graham-Gray raced up the Parkway a mere eleven seconds slower than last year. Her time was 59:49 (10K = 35:57) to nudge past Ackerly for the division crown.

The next spots were very close. First Brenda Schrank of Winchester, VA joined the division with an excellent Cherry Blossom in 62:52, solidly ahead of Samantha Kirby's 64:52. Kirby closed the gap with 63:33 later in the month at the GW Parkway 10 Mile (10K = 38:11). Schrank bolstered her claim for fourth place by racing the Apple Blossom 10K in 38:14. Hilary Cairns of Washington, DC gets the seventh spot with her fine Pike's Peek in 38:17 combined with a solid win at the Capitol Hill Classic 10K in 38:45.

Thirteen runners made the Open Division.

40-44 Women
DARCARS Pike's Peek 10K, 36:30

Linda Sawvell (41) of Newport News, VA earned her sixth spot in the 40-44 division at the Dismal Swamp Stomp HM in 1:25:59.

The division remains one of the largest and, after Alisa Harvey, the most competitive. Harvey is a multiple middle distance record holder. (She holds both the indoor and outdoor American records in the mile and the 800M.) She ran two races. At the season opener, she was a tantalizingly close six seconds from overall victory in 29:17. At DARCARS Pike's Peek she was eighth overall in 36:30.

Martha Merz of Arlington, VA is quietly cementing her position at the runner-up spot. She blazed home at Credit Union Cherry Blossom, winning in 61:03 (10K = 36:41) and finished the GW Parkway Classic with a win in 62:03. When she met with Harvey, she finished second at St. Patrick's in 30:13. At Pike's Peek she was tenth overall in 37:22. Third place Kelly Dworak of Burke, VA was at the right races, winning five of them outright. Her best effort was 62:36 at the Cherry Blossom behind Merz. Both women easily made the open division and will soon be making noise in the 45-49 division.

Rebecca Nathan of Arlington, VA had a fine finish at Pike's Peek in 38:17 for fourth. Anna Catanese of Mechanicsville, VA ran in the largest race by far with more than 20,000 finishers, the Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10K; she ran 38:49. She also won overall at the Ashland 10K in 38:34. That was enough to keep her ahead of an inspired Dismal Swamp HM by sixth place Linda Sawvell of Newport News, VA. Her time of 1:25:59 equals a 38:51 10K. Seventh place Robyn Humphrey was achingly close with a fine Credit Union Cherry Blossom in 64:53 (10K = 39:00) and an age group win at Pike's Peek with 39:06.

Nine runners made the Open Division.

45-49 Women
Shamrock Festival Half Marathon, 1:16:11, 10K = 34:26

Linda Foley (45) of Oak Hill, VA did it all with the fastest 5K, 10K, 10M, and HM in the period.

Lisa Ensle had the best marathon at the Shamrock, racing home in 3:07:00. A month later, she won the Dismal Swamp Stomp HM in 1:26:39. All this was good enough for the third spot in the division. Last period's champion, Andrea Wright, only ran one race. Win Persina is on injured reserve. The Shamrock HM was the champion maker. First, Ramilia Burangulova of Gainesville, VA finished third overall in 1:16:11. That solo flight would have given her serious consideration for runner-up in the open division.

Linda Foley of Herndon, VA aged up from the 40-44 division's runner-up spot to take the division crown. Among qualifiers, she had the top three best times, including the Shamrock HM in 1:23:27. She set the standard for the 10 Mile with 64:33 at the GW Parkway 10M and finished second overall at the Run vs. Row 10K in 39:05. Vanessa Cox of Laurel, MD is new to the division as well. She was the first local runner at Credit Union Cherry Blossom in 65:45 and the first in her division at DARCARS Pike's Pike 10K in 39:22. Fourth place Cindy Conant of Kensington, MD followed her home in both races. She ran 66:33 at the ten mile and 40:32 at the 10K.

Eleanor Kerr of University Park, MD started the period with a win at the St. Patrick's Day 8K in 33:38. Then she ramped up her gears and improved last year's Cherry Blossom time with a 68:52. Sushila Nanda of Arlington, VA finished the season's last two weeks strangely. She struggled at the Battle of the Boulevard 10K in 44:38. Then the last weekend of the period she had the fastest true 5K at the Fort McNair race in 19:53 to fall just short of Kerr's fifth place. Foley ran the distance- friendly Daisy Dash to a victorious 18:18.

Foley, Cox, Ensle, and Conant made it to the open division as well.

50-54 Women
DARCARS Pike's Peek 10K, 41:12

Alison Suckling had a strange trip to the top this period. Even with all the top competition she was favored to win. First, at St Patrick's, she ran away with the title in 34:10. Later, a chip time mistake erroneously gave Cherry Kent of Belton, SC the win. Kent had run 37:28 but "worked" a chip time of 34:02. Last year Kent had run an 8K in 38:20 and a 5K in 25:20.

The following month, Suckling ran a sparkling 69:44 at Credit Union Cherry Blossom but was relegated to second by a Connecticut runner. Then, at the end of the month, she scooted down the Pike for an apparent victory in 41:32--chip time 41:26. However, she had started in the first corral. Meanwhile, local legend Gretchen Triantos of Rockville, MD ran her only race there. Starting in the second corral (a minute later) she hurried down the pike, finishing in 42:12 but with a chip time of 41:08 for the age group win. Afterwards, Suckling noted that she had learned her lesson. Usually it is Betty Blank of Falls Church, VA that keeps Suckling on her toes. Blank ran two fast ten milers, Cherry Blossom in 1:11:03, and then improving at the GW Parkway to win in 70:42. Neither was enough. Then in the last weekend she met newly-minted grandmaster Ofelia Perotti of Alexandria, VA at the Daisy Dash 5K. Perotti had lost to Blank at Sallie Mae, 43:16 to 43:46. The Daisy Dash was definitely short with estimates at barely three miles. However, Perotti pulled away from Blank to win 19:28 to 19:44. When Perotti returned the next day to win the Capitol Hill Classic in 42:51, she earned the runner-up spot.

Linda Kidder of Williamsburg, VA was next, running Credit Union Cherry Blossom in 1:11:50 for fifth in her division. An amazing 28 women in this division ran a qualifying time at the ten-mile race. Deborah Flynn of Gaithersburg, MD was seventh there in 1:13:21 just behind Doris Windsand-Dausman of Frederick, MD, who ran 1:13:09. Flynn waited until the last weekend to up the ante and take the fifth spot by winning the Germantown 5-Miler in 34:21.

55-59 Women
Apple Blossom 10K, 44:01

Three of the top competitors, including last year's winner Sandra Adams, ran only one race. Still, this period's champion, Alice Franks of Rockville, MD, topped all the times but one. Franks had seven age group wins with a small stumble, losing Sallie Mae to runner-up Deborah Gebhardt of Adelphi, MD, 45:53 to 46:03. In April, Franks had beaten this competitor at the GW Parkway 10 Mile 1:15:10 to 1:15:53. Her two best races were even faster, Cherry Blossom in 1:14:50 and the Pike's Peek in 44:55.

Maria Shields of Davidsonville, MD won the "third" ten-miler, the Cherry Pit, in 1:17:24 (10K = 46:31). This was just enough to hold off Linda Gulick of Richmond, VA who had three very solid wins, including the Ukrop's 10K in 46:45. After that, Cherry Blossom decided the three spots. Valerie Campbell of Silver Spring, MD (1:18:25) just edged Jane Poole (1:18:32). The seventh spot goes to Ginny Hughes running 1:19:43.

60-64 Women
Capitol Hill Classic 10K, 46:44

Chris Craun of Bethesda, MD whipped and pureed the division with the five fastest times. As with last year, she sweeps the big three in 10Ks, Pike's Peek, Sallie Mae, and Capitol Hill. Then she dropped a minute off last year's Credit Union Cherry Blossom, winning this time in 1:19:23. For good measure, she added a Battle of the Boulevards 10K win.

The next 14 races (in 10K equivalent order) were shared with four runners battling for the runner-up spot. Andrea Hess of Midlothian won four races, including the Ashland Railroad 10K in 51:15. Linda Tice of Glen Arm, MD also had four wins and had the fastest 5K of the year, winning the Women's 5K by the Bay (24:55). She earns the third spot, winning a head-to-head battle the last day of the period at the BRRC Women's Distance Festival 5K in 25:13. Fourth place Dee Nelson of Gaithersburg, MD was next at that race in 25:29. Pat Welch of Vienna, VA took on Cherry Blossom for third in her age group and fifth in the rankings. Her time was 1:28:42. She also ran the Pike's Peek 10K. Fifteen other runners ran either of those last two races as their only event.

Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile, 81:32, 10K = 49:00
Shamrock Festival Half Marathon, 1:48:26, 10K = 49:00

Just like last year, Janice Stoodley (65) ran one race, Credit Union Cherry Blossom. It was tied to the hundredth of a second with our new champion's best race. Along with her Shamrock Half Marathon race in 1:48:26, Joan Coven of Williamsburg, VA easily had the fastest 10K at Ukrop's, 55:24. Less than a week later she ran the snow-covered Queens Lake 5K in 24:31 for the fastest 5K of the year.

The next four racers also ran at Cherry Blossom, finishing 4, 5, 6, and 7 in their division after two out-of-towners and Stoodley. Nancy Linck was tops with 1:33:59, followed by Rosemary Schwartzbard, 1:35:49, Betty Smith in 1:36:39, and Setsu Rosen in 1:39:22.

Linck was also tops at Sallie Mae. Smith ran fastest at Pike's Peek. Fifth in the division, Setsu Rosen of Washington, DC, is back on the roads, where she won the Capitol Hill Classic in 60:14.

70-74 Women
Sallie Mae 10K, 55:04

Maybe the reason Margery Elliott (74) of Bethesda, MD is her division's champion is because she was dissatisfied with her excellent Sallie Mae 10K in 55:04.

Last year Margery Elliott of Bethesda, MD ran only the one race, DARCARS Pike's Peek 10K in 52:35. This year, at 74, she ran it again and ran it in 57:04. That was more than a minute faster than last period's champion, Tami Graf of Lusby, MD, had run at the Run vs. Row 10K. Elliott was not happy at all with her time. Graf came back with an excellent GW Parkway Classic 10 Mile win in 1:34:39 (10K = 56:53). Then at Sallie Mae, Elliott returned with a swift 55:04 to snatch any chance of a crown from Graf, even with ten Best of 2007 race distances to her credit.

Third place Nancy Fraser of Charlottesville, VA had two races under an hour for 10K equivalence. Her best effort, the Virginia Institute of Autism 5K in 28:22, was one second short of Graf's yearly best. Harriet Locke of Bristol, VA ran the Justin Foundation 5K in 30:27.

75-79 Women
Cassidy & Pinkard Colliers Race for Hope 5K, 34:25, 10K = 71:39

Jacqueline O'Neil of Washington, DC moved into the new division and had the top four times among qualifiers. Though older runners often stay with the 5K, O'Neil also ran the DARCARS Pike's Peek 10K and the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile.

80 & Over Women
Richmond Race for the Cure 5K, 39:19, 10K = 1:21:51

Nine women 80 and older ran at Ukrop's. None of 12 racers in this division had a second race. Two of the women were 85 & older.
