2005 Summer WRR Runner Rankings
Women's Division
By James Moreland November/December 2005 Washington Running Report
Photo above: Victoria McParland (29) of Rockville, MD won
Riley's Rumble Half Marathon in August and is ranked 26th in
the Open Women's division.
Note: The time listed at the beginning of each age group is the
fastest qualifying time run by an athlete in that division. If
the time is listed in bold, it is a performance by the
division champion.
Open Women
Photo: Sharon Donovan (30) of Washington, DC performed at
her best in the National Race for the Cure 5K with a time of
18:59. Her summer ranking is 51 st.
Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K, 27:11 = 34:31
It seems every period some of top runners back off and take a
breather. Skip a ranking period and then come roaring back.
Tatyana Chuklakh celebrated her 23rd birthday moving up a step
to first. Her best time was fourth overall but two of the
faster
times were the only races for other runners. She dodged that
bullet. Back in July Tatyana Chuklakh was capping off her racing with a
second overall placing at the Rockville Twilight 8K in 27:37
(10K = 35:06). After all, she beat her chief competition,
Susannah Kvasnicka (28:39) and Mary Kate Bailey (29:13). In
fact, she beat 49 rival ranked runners in her three races. While Chuklakh rested, the other two prepared for the stretch
run. Kvasnicka rumbled to an easy win at the prestigious
Annapolis 10 Miler in 59:23 (35:41) and the following week made
mincemeat of Jill Krebs at the Kentlands 5K, 17:17 to 17:28.
Krebs was the former Best of 2005 5K record holder with a sub
17:00 effort. Still, the next day Mary Kate Bailey turned the tables on the
woman she just cannot quite catch and stole the runner-up spot
with a fabulous 1:17:35 (10K = 35:03) Rock 'n' Roll Half
Marathon. True, Bailey took 55 seconds more to run her half
marathon 13.1 miles than Kvasnicka got to rest a week before
running the last 5K. Emily Richard strolls into fourth place with four overall
victories, three in major races. Her fastest effort was the
College Park Cares 10K in 35:53. The next six spots are ultra
tight. Aurora Scott gets the lean with two overall victories,
including a 10K equivalent Elizabeth River Run of 36:18.
Speedster Jill Krebs is next with three second place overall
finishes, including a 17:35 at the Baltimore Lady Classic. Victoria Lynch is next with three overall wins, two at major
races. She won the GBMC Father's Day 5K in 17:34 and her
slowest
effort, at the Twilight 8K in 29:36, was not so very far behind
number two Bailey. Lucinda Hull matched Lynch's best race at the Kentlands 5K in
17:34 and both had overall wins at 17:44. Lynch also won the
McVets 5K in 17:40 as the decider. Jackie Concaugh sneaks in
between the two with a fast Tim Harmon 5K in 17:28. Her other
two efforts at longer races were not up to her normal standards
even though she won the Larry Noel 15K in 59:13 (10K= 38:30).
Genevieve Kiley was second in her age group at the Rock 'n'
Roll
HM in 1:20:57 (10K = 36:36) for tenth place.

Elizabeth River 6 Mile, 35:03, 10K = 36:18
She's back! Remember the terminator, Aurora Scott? She dominated
the division in the winter. During the spring, this fifteen year-
old was still in school. In late May, she let loose at the
Elizabeth River 6 Mile with an overall win in 35:03. Her 10K
equivalent was more than four minutes ahead of second place.
That young
lady, Meredith Degynansky, easily qualified for the Open
division. Six-shooter Scott won her sixth straight overall race
at the Mt. Trashmore Family YMCA Independence Day 8K. She more
than trashed the competition with a swift 29:06 (10K = 36:42)
race.To give you an idea of the dominance, third and fourth place
went to two young ladies who very nearly ran side-by-side at two
five milers. Veronica Salcido (14) edged Dominique Lockhart (15)
at the Too Hot to Trot 5M 32:47 to 32:48 (10K = 41:20-22). At
the Rockville Twilight 8K the month before, they crossed the
rain soaked ChampionChip mats together with Salcido officially
the winner. Meanwhile, in Cumberland, Degynansky was earning the
runner-up spot with two fine 5Ks. Her best was the Queen City
WDF in 19:28. Anya Oleynik takes the fifth spot with three age group wins in
four races. Her best effort was at the Cure Autism Now 5K in
Potomac with a 19:56. She trailed the dynamic duo at the
Twilighter. There were 272 ranked times among the 122 runners, of which 53
had two qualifying races.

Capitol Hill Classic 10K, 37:19
This is last time for Alisa Harvey to wear the submasters crown.
She turned forty in September. You would think it would be an
easy victory. After all, she finished second overall at the
Annapolis 10 Mile in 61:58 (10K = 37:14) for easily the fastest
race of the period. She notched four age group titles at four
Major races: her Lawyers Have Heart 10K in 38:07 and the
nighttime lightning-show Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K in 30:29.But stealing her thunder was Denise Knickman with the fastest 5K
of the period. Knickman had the second fastest time of the
period, winning the Howard County WDF in 18:15 outright. In
September, she added another notch to the record books with the
Charm City 20M in 2:13:20 (10K = 38:20) for the fourth fastest
time. In all, Knickman won her age group or the race overall a
dozen times. Her only loss in thirteen races was to Harvey at
the Rockville Twilight 8K in 31:49, making the crowning of
Harvey a done deal. Cathy Puglsey does not race as much as these two. In late May,
she finished second overall at the Cascades Fire Chase 10K in
39:22. Then we did not see her until August. She elected the
double-trouble, heat-enhanced Harris Teeter Leesburg 20K,
finishing sixth overall in 1:24:45 (10K = 40:23). Laura Nelson, from a little farther south, is ready to fly over
to the masters ranks too. She won two races outright in the
south. When she ventured north she settled for second overall at
Damien's 5K in 19:11 and age group winner at the Howard County
WDF in 18:59. Out of the Richmond area, Maureen Ackerly punched
out two quick 5Ks, one an overall win right around a 10K pace of
40:00 for fifth in this period's rankings.

Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon, 1:22:17, 10K = 37:11
Take a look at how many asterisks are in this division. If
massive quantities of victories were the only criteria, Maureen
Hall would be leading Robyn Humphrey up to the winner's circle.
Hall owns western Maryland. When she comes east, she eats up
the
competition. Chomping at the bit for her new masters status,
she
did not disappoint. Her best of ten wins was her Dundalk
Heritage 6K Run in 22:51 (10K = 39:14). Maureen Hall came into Annapolis with high hopes. For most
runners, a tenth place overall in 67:38 (10K = 40:39) would do
it. She started late and her Chip time places her eighth.
Still,
she had her worst effort of the period and was fifth in the
masters division. Robyn Humphrey enjoyed the cooler weather at Annapolis and
popped a fast 65:02 (10K = 39:05) for fourth overall at that
race. She sealed second place in the rankings with an even
faster St. Agnes/Bay Cafe 5K on Labor Day in 18:40 (10K =
38:52). These are two top runners. This period they are two
topped runners as well. Megan Burns trumps Humphrey's Labor Day
with an age group win of her own. Her Rock 'n' Roll Half
Marathon in 1:22:17 (10K = 37:11) was the class of the
division.
She had four of the top five times including two overall wins
at
the 5K. Monica Grillo was sixth overall at Annapolis, ahead of Hall.
Hall's ten other efforts made the difference. Grillo's other
win
was at the DCRRC WDF in 19:30. She had a sub-par performance at
the Rockville Rotary "Rain" Fest 8K in 32:33. Ruth Olson
narrowly edges Cecilia Lutz with her four victories. They both
had identical 19:17 5Ks in June. Lutz turned forty-five and
borrowed her "hotly" contested Leesburg 10K to qualify.

four races in Montgomery County, including an age group win at
the Twilight 8K.
Baltimore Lady Classic 5K, 18:01, 10K = 37:31
Just when you thought it was safe to get into the water,
Ruxton's Lee DiPietro explodes the myth that she has any
competition. The top six places belong to her, including an
overall win, two seconds, and a third place overall. She
ransacked June with a top race every weekend, ending the month
with an 18:01 at the Baltimore Lady Classic. Then it is off to
Triathlete Land for the summer. It must have been a restful
summer because she came back Labor Day with an 18:02 at the St.
Agnes/Bay Cafe 5K.The next five spots are a jumble, best sorted out by throwing
the cards up into the air. Here is where they landed. Valerie
Plyer had two overall wins and a second place overall to garner
the top MRF spot. She nailed the two-spot with the next fastest
race after the DiPietro carnage at the Follow the Children 5K
in
19:27(10K = 40:30). Leisa Ensle pulled out the stops on the
last
day of the ranking period vaulting into third place with her
fabulous Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon in 1:29:49 (10K = 40:35)
with a division topping 12 rivals bested. Debi Bernardes had her usual fine four races/four wins over the
four-month period, so why not award her fourth place. Her top
effort was the first week of the period, racing the 5K Run for
Autism in 19:37 (10K = 40:51). Debbie Flynn ran at the end of
the period, charging the Kentlands 5K in 19:57. Carole Rosasco
book ended the period with two fast ten milers. Her best was
the
Chestertown Tea Party in 69:32.

Photo: Betty Blank, age 52, is runner-up in this competitive
division.
Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon, 1:34:51, 10K = 42:52
This is always a hard division to rank. Somebody pops up and
runs a fast race to steal the crown. Margaret Starnes of
Street,
in northeast Maryland, wins a lot of races. She is a big fish
in
a small pond. Still, her times are too fast to let slide. Betty
Blank is a slim, trim, racing machine and Dorothy Winn is the
new kid in town (50-54). Betty, Margaret, and Linell Smith all
have overall wins. Betty's DCRRC Hugh Jascourt 4 Mile in 26:34
looks golden as the fastest time. We know the course was a tad
short. How short depends on how much you really want a fast
time. As of Labor Day, Margaret Starnes has the fastest official 4-
miler and her Gunpowder Neck 10 Mile in 72:27 ties the fastest
of the year that had been at Cherry Blossom by last period's
champion Naomi Stanford. Starnes caps it with another win at
the
Bel Air Town Run 5K in 20:43, also the fastest such race of the
year. While Blank is seeking solace at the Rockville Twilight 8K in
34:53 and talking to Lawyers (that) Have Heart in 43:39,
Dorothy
Winn nearly passes her for the runner-up spot. Winn's time at
the Elizabeth River 6 Mile (10K = 43:39) rivals Blank's
Lawyers.
Her Run on the Wild Side 5K in 21:22 falls just short of
Blank's
DCRRC WDF in 21:20. A couple more races and Winn's MRF would be
right there with Betty. Laura Roman snatches fourth place over Linell Smith's
impressive
resume of wins, including a record for 20 miles. The proving
ground was the Annapolis 10 Mile where Roman won her division
in
74:49 against second spot Smith's 76:17.

Harris Teeter Leesburg 20K, 1:34:18, 10K = 44:56
With top guns Sandra Adams and Barbara Mathewson taking a
summer hiatus, the door seemed to be wide open for prolific
racer Alice Franks. Then, at last we see the Rose of summer.
Historically one of the fastest masters division runners in
local history, Rose Malloy is oft times seen as a smiling
volunteer. In May, she ran the Chestertown Tea Party 10M in
75:40; June was the Dawson's 5 Mile in 36:15; July was the
Annapolis Striders WDF in 21:37(10K = 45:00). Finally, in
August she returned to the site of her many age group and
overall victories, the top dog ten miler in Maryland, the
Annapolis Ten Miler. She outdistanced her next rival by three
quarters of a mile, running away with a 75:33 win.Alice Franks edged her with the top MRF based on four major
races to one. Malloy had four of the top five times. Frank had
the second fastest time, winning the lovely Cascades Fire Chase
10K in 45:20. Then she owned the second spot with places 6
through 13. Marilyn Bevans nudged out Franks's tenth best time
at St. Agnes/Bay Cafe Labor Day 5K in 23:10 for third. Freyda
Greenburg finished second to Franks at the steamy Leesburg 10K,
49:04 to 47:16. She earned the fourth spot over Esther Buchser
at the Annapolis Ten Miler, prevailing 83:40 to 85:56.

St. Agnes/Bay Cafe Labor Day 5K, 23:59, 10K = 49:56
Dee Nelson had seven age group wins and that is just the races
that we know of. Nelson runs sixty races every year and usually
wins them. Her 23:59 at the swift
St. Agnes/Bay Cafe Labor Day 5K tops all the runners in the
division. Then along came Betty King with the next five times
and eight of the top twelve. She edged Nelson at the Capital
Crescent 5K 24:24 to 24:28. Add to that the best five and ten
mile races of the period and, voila, we have a new champion. Judy Gilbert, a WDF runner, lost to King at Annapolis and to
Nelson at Westminster but redeemed herself winning at Howard
County in 24:28. Helene Price ran the swift Yorktown Freedom
Run 5K in 24:42 for fourth place. Priscila Prunella had a great
MRF score running between DCRRC and MCRRC. Her fastest time was
at the distance-challenged DCRRC Hugh Jascourt 4M, most
probably a minute short. Her most impressive race was the MCRRC
Riley's Rumble HM in 1:59:07. Let us see someone top that!

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun WDF 5K, 27:40, 10K = 57:43
Tami Graf laments turning sixty-nine and having to compete in
those 60-99 age group awards races. She still wins them nearly
all the time, going ten for ten. Most of her races are 5Ks and
her top ranked time was at the PGRC WDF in 27:40 (10K = 57:43).
The top competitors in this division did not meet very often. Graf's chief competition had been Arlowene Garland. Garland has
the top 10K, winning the Civitan 10K in 59:38. She is no slouch
in the 5K, running the SPCA Run for Shelter 5K in June at 28:05
just one week after Graf had run 28:04 at the DCRRC WDF. Third
place Liz Villadsen makes herself known with a Charlottesville
Independence Day 5K in 28:08. How cool would it be to have all
three racing together at the same time?

Capitol Hill Classic 10K, 54:16
After age sixty, often runners do not get the full benefit of
their age in races. With 60-99 age groups in races, runners can
proudly say, "No one older than me beat me" and still walk home
without an award. Harriet Locke has a lock on the division with
the three fastest races, all of different lengths. She was
impressive with a half marathon and her fastest race the Daniel
Boone Wilderness Trail 5M in 44:42. Last period's runner-up, Pat Ewell of Williamsburg, VA, has the
next three best races, slowing slightly from the cooler spring.
Her best effort is the Elizabeth River 6-Mile in 61:54.

Race for the Cure 5K, 38:00, 10K = 79:07
It is all about the 5K. These ladies ran all of their races at
that distance. Martha Trimmer generally runs more races, while
Mildred Lieder comes out only from time to time. She is still
proudest of the award she won some ten years ago on which they
put "age 60 and younger" instead of "older." In the closest of
battles, Trimmer ran the Baltimore Lady Classic in 43:23.
Lieder ran the Annapolis WDF in 43:24, where she finished
second to Betty Moore.
