Open Women
St. Agnes/Bay Cafe Labor Day 5K, 16:32, 10K = 34:25Tenth ranked Briana Whaley (29) of Culpeper, VA won the
Abebe Bikila Day International Peace Half Marathon in
1:21:19. Belainesh Gebre (19) of Washington, DC is more than ready for
the Open Division. She is the first of two multiple division
winners this period. Even with the fastest race of the period,
her crown was not ready until that last race day of the ranking
period. Her race two days earlier was a squeaker of a win
against third ranked Teyba Naser at Kentlands 16:53 to 16:54.
Recently-profiled runner Cheryl Anderson of Richmond, VA had
run the Yorktown 5K in 16:49 for the runner-up spot. Naser's
second race was a one second close call at the Twilight 8K for
second place in 27:51. Anderson spent Labor Day weekend in
Virginia Beach tuning up for the Olympic Trials with a first
American placing at the Rock 'n' Roll HM in 78:28 (10K =
35:28). After an overall win at the Pikesville 5K in 17:36, Phoebe Ko
finished fourth in the Twilight 8K race in 28:13 and earned
fourth in the division. Fifth place Vanessa Hunter looked
impressive winning all four of her races, including major races
at 5K, 10K, and 20K. Her best race was a 36:05 win at Lawyers
Have Heart over former multiple Open Champion Susannah
Kvasnicka.

St. Agnes/Bay Cafe Labor Day 5K, 16:32, 10K = 34:25Belainesh Gebre did not have to contend with Aurora Scott this
period but maybe she would not have minded. She waited the
whole period, and then in the last weekend she crushed the
competition with two overall wins. At Kentlands, she ran an
excellent 16:53. With a single rest day she returned on
September 3rd to vanquish the field with a 16:32 win. Jane Gay of Roanoke, VA was tenth last year and ninth this
spring. Now she leaps up the ladder to the runner-up spot with
two overall wins for the third and fourth fastest races of the
period. At the Commonwealth Games, she won in 18:44. The last
two periods Halsey Sinclair had qualified while her sister
Ashlyn rested. Well, not actually rested as the twins crossed
the Rockville Rotary Twilight finish line together in 31:12
(10K = 39:37) and Ashlyn getting the lean. Halsey had the
second race though and qualifies for the third spot in the
division. Heidi Peterson (13) bests fellow Williamsburg racer Dakota
McManus (11) at the Yorktown 5K in July by a minute with 19:07
to earn the fourth spot. McManus, with five age group wins,
earns the tenth spot. Megan DiGregorio sandwiched Courtney
Waldhauser's 19:13 overall win at the Rite Aid 5K with a 19:10
and 19:15. She wins the fifth spot with her head-to head win at
the Xterra Boordy Scramble 5K 19:28 to 19:46.

Lawyers Have Heart 10K = 36:22Susannah Kvasnicka has a new trainer, Matt Centrowicz. She
picked the Lawyers Have Heart 10K as a test and very nearly won
the race outright. Her runner-up time of 36:32 was the top race
of the period. Two weeks later at the New Balance Jenny Smith
Baltimore Women's Classic 5K she ran away from the field with
an identical race equivalent in 17:33. Susan Graham-Gray had
three overall wins but nothing longer than 10K this time. Her
best race was a runner-up spot at the Iron Furnace 5K in 17:54
for a narrow edge over third place Feng Sun. Sun had been second overall the week before at the Run for
Recovery 5K in 17:56. She also ran an impressive Twilight 8K in
29:36, finishing ahead of masters runner Alisa Harvey. The next four runners all had their second best race with a 10K
equivalent of 38:54. Kristi Markowitz gets the fourth spot by
improving her Yorktown 5K of 18:41 a month later to an overall
win at the Coast Guard Day 5K in 18:06. Julia Smith won the
Civitan 10K outright in May in 38:59 and the Run for Shelter in
18:20 in June before producing her 38:54 equivalent winning the
Heritage Festival 5M in 30:51.

Kentlands/Lakelands 5K, 17:25, 10K = 36:16Ninth ranked Ruth Olson (44) of Fredericksburg, VA was
second overall at the SPCA Run for Shelter 5K in 19:29. Only one of the six races, five major, run by Alisa Harvey was
an overall win. Her slowest race was a runner-up spot at the
Hartwood 10 Mile in 63:28. Fifth place Sheryl Kline of Arnold,
MD had the second fastest ten miler, winning Annapolis the same
day in 68:40. Harvey had two fast 10Ks, Lawyers in June, 37:23,
third overall and Leesburg in August, 37:15, second overall.
Linda Sawvell of Newport News, VA had her best race, an overall
win at Elizabeth River 10K in 38:59. In her fifth best race,
Harvey won the Twilight 8K in 29:52. The next best 8K came from
Linda Sawvell at 31:56. Also from Newport News, Pamela Lovett had five division wins,
which includes three overall wins. At her Run for Darfur 5K in
Richmond, she ran 19:07. She also won the PTC WDF 5K in 19:24.
Anne Catanese of Mechanicsville, VA is the regular top runner
in the Richmond area. She had three overall wins including a
swift 19:17 5K in June. Then in last August she won the
inaugural Patrick Henry HM in 1:28:45 for fourth overall. Harvey took total control of the division with an overall 5K
win in 17:50 and the final weekend she was third overall at the
Kentlands 5K in 17:25 (10K = 36:16). Sheryl Kline takes fifth place with her overall win at Dawson's
10K in 40:28. Kline had four overall victories, two runner-ups,
and four more division titles in finishing her pre work to take
over the 45-49 division soon.

Charlottesville 4 Miler, 24:21, 10K = 38:56Tracey Dugdale (47) of Reston, VA won an age group award at
the Twilight Festival 4 Miler in 27:30 to earn 24th place in
the division. The division expanded to 46 runners and for the first time in a
period that she raced, Lee DiPietro (now 49) did NOT win the
crown. She struggled a little with a rare slower than 40-minute
time (40:19) at a 10K to start the summer. Then she came back
and set the 5K record with a major race overall win on Father's
Day in 18:54. The following week, she improved at the Baltimore
Women's Classic in 18:46 (10K = 39:04). Andrea Wright of Charlottesville had a solid Independence Day
5K in 19:16 for second overall. Then on Labor Day at the
Women's 4 Mile she stole the division with a swift 24:21, where
she was again second overall. Linda Foley, who is making a name for herself on the track this
summer, matched DiPietro's 10K exactly, winning at Leesburg.
Her Tim Harmon 5K was identical to Wright's 5K race. All this
earned her fifth place. Kelly Dworak was the second fastest in
the 5K, racing the Run for the Roses in 19:05 for an overall
win. That nearly matched her runner-up placing at the
CapitalOne 8K in 31:16 (10K = 39:42). Leisa Ensle of Virginia
Beach, VA came close at the East Coast Surfing 5K the last week
in August, racing 19:07. Then in her last chance, she narrowly
edged past Dworak for third in the division at the Rock 'n'
Roll HM in 1:27:50 (10K = 39:41).

Freedom Support Run 5K, 20:00, 10K = 41:38For years Betty Blank of Falls Church, VA had the division to
herself. Then along came Alison Suckling of Arnold, MD and the
two have been battling for the lead. Now the division is just too hot and fully stocked. Suckling
struggled at Lawyers this year as both runners slowed from last
year's 42:24 to 43:17 (Blank) and 43:45 (Suckling). Neither of
those times was in the top dozen for the period. Suckling
rebounded at the Too Hot to Trot 5M in 34:08, a mere shadow of
her division winning time last year in 32:58. Blank responded
with four faster races including a half-mile victory over
seventh place Doris Windsand-Dausman at the Leesburg 20K in
1:29:18 (10K = 42:15). Gretchen Triantos of Rockville does not race a lot, preferring
hometown races. She also prefers the short ones, owning some
track records at Montgomery College for many years. She
struggled in the miserable weather at the River Rumble HM but
she had already put her mark in the division, winning the
Capital Crescent 5K in 20:35. That moved her past Suckling, who
had a 5K best of 21:14 during the summer. Deborah Flynn was
third at Lawyers in 44:14 but she vaulted past both Suckling
and Triantos with a win at the Twilight 8K and most importantly
an excellent 20:35 at the Kentlands 5K on Labor Day weekend. That still left Blank in second place as Ofelia Perotti of
Alexandria, VA lengthened her stride with the three fastest 5Ks
of the period. Her 20:00 flat Freedom 5K (10K = 41:38) earned
the division crown. The last weekend of the period, she
cemented the division with a 1:33:15 (10K = 42:11) at the
Rock 'n' Roll HM.

Elizabeth River Run 10K = 45:19Patricia Gilley (55) of King William, VA had the fastest
clock time at the Rock 'N' Roll Half Marathon to earn seventh
place in the division. Nancy Crippen got in a fast 5K at the Run for Shelter in early
June, racing 22:17 to capture the division. After that, she
turned 60 and won a prestigious double (win two divisions) not
done since Patrick Griffith was at the same juncture two years
ago. Callie Edmunson of Woodbridge, VA lost the division,
finishing second in that same race with 22:30. Then she came
achingly close with a 22:20 at the Run for the Future 5K in
late July. Indeed, she needed every second just to keep the
runner-up spot. Third place Maria Shields ran an identical
46:30 to win the Dawson 10K. Shields had a best of 22:47 in her
five division wins. Linda Gulick of Richmond, VA had eight division wins. Nearly
all of the top races by the women in this division are age
group wins. Time becomes vital. Gulick's best race was a 22:37
5K. With an eight pack of victories, Alice Franks looked good
for fifth place. Her best 5K at the Capital Crescent in 22:56
mirrored her Lawyers have Heart 10K win in 47:47

FARC Heritage Festival 5 Mile Run, 37:26, 10K = 47:12Helen Price (62) of Washington, DC earned her sixth place
ranking with an age group win at the MCRRC Run for the Roses 5K
in 24:58. The division continues to grow in size with three new runners
in the division to challenge the dominance of Chris Craun, the
consensus top pick for the first half of the year. Craun, from
Bethesda, MD, took on the competition in major races and won
four times in the 5K, 8K, 10M, and HM. Betty Brothers of
Virginia Beach, VA moved on stage with the fastest 10K of the
period, running Elizabeth River in 49:08. Craun eschewed the
10K but her 23:01 Fourth of July win in the 5K held Brothers
back. Brothers' best 5K was a hometown WDF in 24:01 (10K =
50:00). In early July, Nancy Crippen stepped in and took command with
the fastest 5-mile of the year at the Heritage Festival 5M in
37:26. Two weeks later, Craun ran alone, winning the Twilight
8K. With no one within a mile of her time on the slightly
shorter course (about 46 meters), she won the division in
37:28. In the summer, mega racer Jane Poole ran 13 events before
entering the new division. Though she was well behind Craun at
the Cure Autism Now, the new division gave her a surge of
energy. At the Annapolis 10 Miler, she pushed Craun the whole
way before yielding a narrow loss 81:49 to 82:09 (10K = 49:22).
Added to her Leesburg 20K two weeks before in 1:43:48, she
slipped in just behind Brothers. Then while Craun was battling
Poole at Annapolis, Crippen was winning the "other" 10 miler at
Hartwood in 1:19:09. Andrea Hess of Midlothian, VA earns the fifth spot with the
fastest half of the period--Lynchburg in 1:52:24. That
surpassed Craun's River Rumble of 1:52:52 on a hilly course and
a day so humid it rained the first couple miles of the race.
Brothers ran the slightly warm, pancake-flat Rock 'n' Roll HM
in 1:57:15 to keep things interesting.

up her gears for a victory at the Run for Roses in 27:19. Then,
in the first week in August, Janice Hicks of Bristol, VA sprung
onto the scene to wrest the division title away with an
excellent Railroad Days 5K in 26:57 (10K = 56:07). Nancy Linck of Alexandria, VA won the Lawyers have Heart 10K in
57:52 to keep the race close. She followed that in the last
week in August by besting four other competitors in her

Potomac Valley Games, 28:26, 10K = 59:12Two Nancys, Patron from Williamsburg and Fraser from
Charlottesville, entered the division. Tami Graf of Lusby, MD
upped the ante and added 12 division wins to her credentials to
sweep the division. With the top seven times, she appeared to
get faster as the summer wore on. She notched three sub 60:00
10Ks and in the final weekend lowered her 5K to 28:26. Barbara Field had ten races including eight 5Ks but she
celebrated her best race by far on July 4th at the Dundalk 6K
in 36:01. This nudged out all three of Fraser's 5Ks, albeit by
the slimmest of margins (best of 29:43). Then, in the final
week Fields ran the hometown, all-women 4 miler in 37:58 and
scurried by to claim the runner-up spot. Patron had the next
best 5K at Coast Guard Day in 30:28 to earn fourth place.
