2007 Winter WRR Runner Rankings

Women's Division
By James Moreland
May/June 2007
For the Washington Running Report

Photo above by Brightroom.com: Jenny Mlinarcik (27) of Alexandria, VA capped off a fine winter with an overall win at the Christmas Caper 10K in 39:27 to earn 34th place in the Open Division.

Open Women
Blacksburg Classic 10 Mile, 59:11, 10K = 35:34

This largest division, with 55 qualifiers, had no clear cut winner. Indeed, the top 11 times were recorded by 11 different women. Maria Elena Calle wins the division with an oft-misnamed race. The Colonial 3 mile has been called a 5K but is actually only three miles. Calle blasted a swift 16:29 (10K = 35:32) to top all runners. Two-thirds of the top 20 times were overall wins but no one busted 37:00 for the 10K. Calle's best 10K was a win at the Richmond Turkey Trot in 37:21. Even 11th best Renee High of Virginia Beach, VA, with her two overall wins, ran a second place by a second 37:10 at the VAB Turkey Trot 10K.

Nobody seemed to want the championship. Alisa Harvey races to win. At 41, she just missed being our oldest champion. She had three overall wins, including a 17:29 (10K = 36:24) at the Red Ribbon 5K, to take the number two slot. Third place Shelley Brand of Norfolk finished more than a minute behind High's slowest 10K in 37:16. Then she pulled out the stops and ran the fastest half marathon at East Beach in 1:20:46 (10K = 36:30) to take the third place. Rumbling in right behind are two runners racing together the last day of the period. Erin Swain of Clifton, VA just did beat Cara Wettlaufer of Baltimore, MD. Both runners finished Kelly's Shamrock 5K officially in 17:33 (10K = 36:32).

Sherry Stick of Eldersburg, MD was next at that race in 17:48 (10K = 37:04) but it only got her eighth place. Laura Turner of Washington, DC is sixth with her Colonial HM in 1:21:20 (10K = 36:45). Also from Washington, DC, Sasha Scott trailed only Harvey at the Red Ribbon 5K, finishing in 17:42 (10K = 36:51). Melissa Tanner had the fastest 10K in her GW Birthday 10K in 37:05 to earn ninth. In March, Briana Whaley posted a 17:14 (10K = 37:09) at the Hugenot Park 3 Mile for the tenth spot.

Every one of these runners, including 12th place Sarah Spalding who won the By George 5K in 17:53 (10K = 37:14), is in position to take all the cake. Add in their second races and the puzzle of placement is more than doubled.

19 & Younger Women
CTC New Year's 5K, 17:59, 10K = 37:26

By far the largest women's division in qualifiers, the field was wide open with national class star Aurora Scott absent. Last period runner-up Anya Oleynik of Gaithersburg, MD was ever so close to winning all three of her races. The first was a second place finish to 12-year-old Ann Ryba of Bethesda, MD at the Turkey Burnoff 5 mile in 33:00 (10K = 41:37). Ryba was 32:41 (10K = 41:13). In December, she nearly chased down winner Marjan Huizing at the Jingle Bell Jog 8K in 31:27 (10K = 39:56). She missed by one second, establishing order as Ryba's time was farther back in 32:02 (10K = 40:40). Then, the last day of the period she finished four seconds back of Huizing at the Run Aware 5K in 18:12 (10K = 37:54), again ahead of Ryba, who ran 19:12 (10K = 39:58). That time earned her the runner-up spot in the division.

The championship goes to Laura Paulsen of Lutherville, MD. Paulsen was the overall winner at the Towson Turkey Trot in 18:30 (10K = 38:31). She squeezed into the throne at the toughest of the five milers, the Celtic Solstice, finishing second overall in 30:05 (10K = 37:56). Third place Kristen Malloy followed her home at that race in 32:25 (10K = 40:53). Then she claimed her bronze on the notoriously tough, hilly Metric Marathon in Columbia with 1:48:52 (.10K = 39:05). Eleven- year-old Dakota McManus of Williamsburg, VA had nine age group wins, including an overall win.

35 - 39 Women
Ashburn Turkey Trot 10K, 36:08

Some races can fool you. Did the runner have a great day or was the course not quite as advertised? Head-to-head on the same course really helps. Montgomery County ended the period with a new race, the Run Aware 5K, and times were real fast. Marjan Huizing (photo left) placed second in that race with a time of 18:16 (10K = 38:02) to take the division. Fifth place Elizabeth Feldman was third overall in 18:38 (10K = 38:48). Huizing was also the overall winner in three rolling, turn-filled five milers courtesy of MCRRC. Her best of the three was the Jingle Bell Jog in 31:26 (10K = 39:54).

Hilary Cairns already had a faster 5M, running the Alexandria Turkey Trot in 31:26 (10K = 39:38). She boosted that with a win over sixth place Cathy Pugsley of Sterling, VA at the Acumen Solutions Jingle All the Way 10K 38:15 to 39:02. Pugsley had a stronger race later at the Van Metre 5M in 30:55 (10K = 38:59) as that course added a few "bonus meters" to make it long by as much a minute. However, officially we are scoring the race by its announced distance.

In February, Cairns met up with Feng Sun at the GW Birthday 10K. Sun had won the AS Valentine's Day 5K in 18:43 (10K = 38:58) the week before. The fast GW Birthday course got the competitive juices flowing and she busted a 38:08 over Cairns's 38:48 to almost steal the title from Huizing. Colleen Pak of Virginia Beach, VA ran four races 20K and longer with two overall wins and two seconds. Her best effort at the East Beach HM in 1:26:02 (10K = 38:53) moves her into fourth place in the division.

40 - 44 Women
Red Ribbon 5K, 17:29, 10K = 36:24

Photo left by Brightroom.com: Amanda Dion (41) of Sterling, VA won her division on the challenging DCRRC Belle Haven 25K in 1:58:46. She is ranked 34th for Winter 2007.

Alisa Harvey of Manassas, VA laid down the law with three overall wins to end 2006 and nearly ended up being the Open champion as well. As a record-setting track star, she was gearing up for the winter Indoor Track season. She leads the huge masters division with the three fastest times among qualifiers. First, a comfortable win in November at the Virginia Run Turkey Trot 5K in 17:54 (10K = 37:16), followed by a 37:18 win at the rolling hills of Rudolph's Red Nose 10K. Then she capped the year winning the Red Ribbon 5K in 17:29 (10K = 36:24).

Linda Foley of Herndon, VA had run the two 5Ks with Harvey, finishing in 19:17 and 19:19 (10K = 40:13) and looking a little sluggish. In February, she leapfrogged past all the other runners and handily bested fifth place Kelly Dworak of Burke, VA at the GW Birthday 10K 38:48 to 39:02 to take the runner-up spot.

Anna Catanese of Mechanicsville, VA had four age group wins, never finishing lower than third place overall. Her best race was the Frostbite 15K in 59:52 (10K = 38:56). Rebecca Nathan gets the squeaker of a nod with her two best races. She won the DCRRC New Year's Day 5K outright in 18:44 (10K = 39:00). In December, she ran the Acumen Solutions Jingle All the Way 10K in 39:00 ahead of sixth place Monica Grillo of Arlington, VA. Catanese's second race was at Potter Homes 5K in 18:53 (10K = 39:19). Nathan had another overall win at the Snowflake 5K.

Linda Sawvell of Newport News, VA came up with a special race at Fort Eustis 10K in 39:05 to vault up a few places. Dworak maintained fifth easily with her Blue & Gray HM in 1:27:48 (10K = 39:40). That was well ahead of Sawvell's Toy for Tots 10K in 40:59.

Ten of the 39 fleet masters women qualified for the Open division.

45 - 49 Women
Martha Jefferson 8K, 30:52, 10K = 39:11

Andrea Wright of Charlottesville, VA is the real deal, defending her crown. She capped the division with the two best races, winning not only her division but the entire races as well. In February, she won the Amnesty 5K in 19:24 (10K = 40:23). That put paid to runner-up Win Persina of Washington, DC. Persina had run three nearly identical 5K wins in December, capping the year at the Red Ribbon with 19:51 (10K = 41:20).

Third place Debi Bernardes of King George, VA started the period with her best race at the Potter Homes 5K in 19:56 (10K = 41:26). She ended the period at the John Robbins 8K in 33:27 (10K = 42:28). Wright already had the title but she added the Martha Jefferson 8K overall win in 30:52 (10K = 39:11) to dominate the division.

Lisa Fichman of Columbia, MD took out Marjorie Boyd of Annapolis, MD for the fourth spot at the B&A Trail HM in 1:32:27 (10K = 471:47) to 1:33:38 (10K = 42:19). Boyd held off Cindy Conant's bid for fifth place at the Al Lewis 10 Mile in 70:17 (10K = 42:14) with her Anniversary 15K in 64:21 (10K = 41:50).

Wright made it to the open division as well.

50 - 54 Women
Tidewater Striders Tune-up 25K, 1:47:31, 10K = 40:29

Alison Suckling of Arnold, MD is back on top. She won the AS Anniversary 15K in 64:28 (10K = 41:55) to put away the division. In the most important showing at the Al Lewis 10 Mile in January, she met up with last period's leader, Debbie Flynn, and last year's winter champion, Betty Blank. Suckling won easily in 71:38 (10K = 43:03). Flynn faded to third in 75:30 (10K = 45:22) and did not race again in the period. Blank had an off day, finishing in 73:59 (10K = 44:28). She had six better races in the period, including an age group win at the DCRRC JFK 20K in 1:30:08 (10K = 42:56). That was not enough to overtake Suckling but it kept her ahead of third place Nancy Ferris of Goode, VA who ran a Jingle Bell 10K in 43:44.

Linda Wack (photo above by Brightroom.com) of Germantown got stuck on five milers, running four of them for fourth place. Her best race was the Jingle Bell Jog in 35:25 (10K = 44:58) behind Blank's 34:35 (10K = 43:54). Linell Smith of Baltimore, MD ran the B&A Trail HM to end the period in 1:00:21 (10K = 45:21). Margaret Starnes of Street, MD got the next spot the first day of the period doing a Turkey Trot 5K in 22:39 (10K = 47:09).

55 - 59 Women
VAB Turkey Trot 10K, 44:46

Barbara Mathewson of Virginia Beach slowed 30 seconds from last year's win at the VAB Turkey Trot, finishing in 44:46 but it was again enough to win her the crown. Good thing, too, because her efforts at the longer distances of 20, 25, and 30K, while netting age group wins, would have left her in seventh place in the division.

Alice Franks (photo left by Brightroom.com) began her racing with two races two days apart. First, she bested Deborah Gebhardt of Adelphi, MD at the largest 10K, the YMCA Turkey Chase, 47:44 to 48:13. They locked horns again in December at the Jingle All the Way 10K. Franks prevailed 45:44 to 46:35, taking sixth place Margaret Davis (48:44) and seventh place Freyda Greenberg (48:53) with her.

The closest battle was for the third spot. Nancy Crippen of Stafford, VA, at 59, sneaks ahead, running the Potter Homes 5K in 22:22 (10K = 46:34) and then capping it with a period ending John Robbins 8K in 37:08 (10K = 47:08). Maria Shields of Davidsonville, MD takes the fifth spot with her AS Anniversary 15K in 1:13:57 (10K = 48:05).

Note that at the Acumen Solutions Jingle All the Way 10K, Franks was not the winner. Naomi Stanford ran her only race there in 45:00. Rose Malloy improved last year's B&A HM to 1:39:52 (10K = 45:08) for her only race.

Photo by Brightroom.com: Karolynn Coleman (62) and Norm Coleman (62) of Chevy Chase, MD both improved their times from last year's Annapolis 10 Mile at the DCRRC Al Lewis 10 Mile. Karolyn is ranked 7th, while Norm made 14th.

Chris Craun of Bethesda, MD cruised to the title, winning the two largest 10Ks of the period. She began with the rolling YMCA Turkey Chase in 48:52, cruising to a ten minute victory. At the Acumen Solutions Jingle All the Way 10K she finished the fast West Potomac course in 46:27 to take the crown from runner-up Linda Kearney, who ran 49:23. Craun's third race was a loss to B.J. King on the rolling Baltimore hills of Celtic Solstice the following week, 39:53 to 41:03. King had just one race. Kearney matched her own race equivalent while winning the Red Ribbon 5K in 23:43 to end the year.

Betty Brothers of Virginia Beach, VA went long, racing the Fort Story 20K, 25K, and 30K all to victory. Her best event was the 30K in 2:42:40 (10K = 50:15). Fourth place Dee Nelson ran a six pack of 5Ks, including her best in Frederick Thanksgiving Day in 24:51 (10K = 51:55). While all courses are different, she matched Helene Price in December when both ran very similar courses at the PVTC Christmas Caper. Nelson won the 5K in 24:56 (10K = 51:55), while Price won the 10K in 51:56. Linda Tice of Glen Arm, MD was next, racing the Frozen Finger 5M in 41:33 (10K = 52:24).

Martha Jefferson 8K, 46:19, 10K = 58:48

With Tami Graf out of the picture and Joan Covan not racing, it was looking like a battle between Betty Smith of Rockville, MD and Arlowene Garland of Warsaw, VA. Garland boldly started the period with the fastest 5K of the period at the Potter Homes Turkey Trot in 28:31 (10K = 60:19). Smith opted for the Northern Central Trail Marathon, which may have taken the legs out of her. Impressively enough, her best of three 5 milers was the Jingle Bell Jog 8K in early December with 47:54 (10K = 60:49). Garland matched that to the second the last weekend of the period at the John Robbins 8K and looked good for the title.

Louise Dudley of Charlottesville, VA had the only other sub 30:00 5K in February. Then at the Martha Jefferson 8K on March 11 she jetted past the competition to the title, racing home in 46:19 (10K = 58:48). Pauline Ely of Hampton, VA won seven times, with her best race coming at the Fort Eustis 10K in 66:53 for fourth in the division.

Fort Eustis 10K, 57:34

Tami Graf of Lusby, MD quickly took over the new division, winning all nine of her races, all significantly faster than any other racer. She owns ten Best of 2007 times and may well finish the year tops in every single distance. She traveled to southern Virginia for her best race, the Fort Eustis 10K, in 57:34. Five, 10, 15, and 20K she won them all. Avelina Ibarra of Virginia Beach, VA stuck with 10Ks, running four of them. Jane Berkeley of Palmyra, VA came on with her best race the final weekend at the Martha Jefferson 8K. Ibarra broke form and ran her only 5K at the Angel 5K the same day to take second place over Berkeley's best
