The Season of the Long Races

2006 WRR Fall Runner Rankings

For the second time [spring 2006], there were more than 100,000 racers in a single season. Even with all the fine times, the percentage of ranked runners nearly bottomed out at 2.81%. It must be all those marathons. The top 12 races included three half marathons, three marathons with the granddaddy, Marine Corps, having 25% more than the nearly 16,000 Army 10 mile finishers. Of course, the largest 8K, nTelos, was part of the Richmond Marathon; Marine Corps had a little add-on 10K with 2,700 finishers, and the Baltimore Festival had a HM, a 5K, and a marathon. The Arlington 9-11 race was the largest 5K with more than 2,500 runners.

Army claimed the most ranked runners with 170 yet that was only 1% of the total. The weather-crippled Justice-Columbia Masonic Lodge #3 Veterans Day 10K had ten times the percentage of ranked times with 88 of 844 finishers. The race was expected to be the top 10K in size, but half of those registered passed on racing that day. The Battle of the Potomac 5K featured 80 ranked times from the129 finishers for 62%. NTelos, with 87, had double the amount of ranked runners of the Fair Lakes 8K, but Fair Lakes had just barely 20% of the total finishers that nTelos had.

A remarkable one-third of the 217 races had more than 10% of their finishers with ranked times. Nearly all of those races were smaller races. Not surprisingly, in this group only Veterans Day had more than 255 finishers. Moreover, the tough, hilly Back to School 8K, with that number (255 finishers), is harder to explain. The third largest of these mini-titan races, the Governor's Land 5K, has a tradition of lightning fast times with one in six runners earning ranked status.

The 2,856 ranked times is second only to this year's summer, which is a longer period by two months. 1,182 different men and 960 different women ran at least one qualifying time. 311 men and 243 women were ranked.

Washington, DC boasted 17 races. Maryland had 83 races with the largest groups being in Baltimore (10) and Columbia (8). The larger state of Virginia had 117 races, Richmond taking the lead with 11 races, Virginia Beach with nine, and Alexandria with eight.

Runners who win the race or win their division in a race earn an asterisk beside their name. Open runners only get an asterisk for an overall win. The Speed Alone (reflected at the top of each section) is the fastest qualifying time run for each division. In red, it means the division champion ran it.
