How to Convert Your Race Time to a 10K Equivalent
Washington Running Report Runner Rankings
By Kathy Freedman July 17, 2003 Rockville, MD For the Washington Running Report
Do you aspire to be a ranked runner? Here is information you
need to convert your race distance to a 10K equivalent time.
The Formula
The Washington Running Report Runner Rankings converts
all race times to 10K equivalent times to allow "apples to
apples" comparisons between race performances. We acknowledge
that all races and race courses aren't created equally, and take
that into account in making the comparisons. To calculate your equivalent time value, first convert your
clock time to seconds. Next, if your distance is less
than 10K, multiply your figure by the corresponding number
on the chart.
Example: A woman running a 21:47 5K race:
(21 x 60 + 47) = 1307 seconds
1307 seconds x 2.082 = 2741 seconds
2741 seconds / 60 = 45:41 in clock time = 10K equivalent.
If the distance is longer than 10K, divide your figure by
the number on the chart
Example: A man running a half-marathon in 84:50:
(84 x 60 + 50) = 5090 seconds
5090 seconds / 2.204 = 2309 seconds
2309 seconds = 38:29 in clock time = 10K equivalent.
