2001 WRR Runner Rankings - The Best of the Best
Men's Division
Dot Collins March/April 2002 Washington Running Report
Open Men
There were almost 100 rankings earned in the men's open division
during 2001; however, many of those top runners failed to get
the required two rankings to be included in the year-end
rankings. As a matter of fact, only twenty men earned at least
two rankings, and only two of those men, Dan Courtney and Eric
Estrada, managed to get three rankings.
We have awarded the top ranking this year to Montclair's Jason
Van Horn, based on his top three finish in the summer rankings.
Van Horn (photo at left) had several race victories during the
summer ranking period, including the WaWa Hartwood 10 Miler and
the Heritage 5 Miler. Van Horn's other ranking was a 14th place
finish in the spring rankings.
The only man to earn two period rankings and hold the top slot
at any point during the year is our runner-up for 2001. Steve
Crowder of Fincastle, VA was the winter rankings champion, a
berth he earned largely on the strength of an overall win at the
Blacksburg Ten Miler, where he ran 53:33. In the winter, Crowder
also placed third at the Potter Homes Turkey Trot. Crowder's
other ranking was a 21st place finish in the spring, which
included nearly forty ranked men in this division.
Youssef Ennaciri of Baltimore is our third place finisher this
year, a result of his top five finish in the summer rankings,
where he collected four overall race victories, including head-
to-head triumphs over age group competitors like Dan Courtney
and Eric Estrada.
Chesapeake's Mike Colaiacovo was consistent in the two periods
in which he earned a ranking, and we have awarded him fourth
place for 2001. In the winter, he finished third by beating age
group rivals Michael Harrison and Michael Mann in the ranking
period. Colaiacovo's other ranking was a sixth place finish
behind VanHorn and Ennaciri.
Dan Courtney, who has three rankings to his credit, is the final
man to earn a top five slot in the year-end rankings. Courtney's
most impressive performance was a seventh place finish this past
summer, just ahead of Eric Estrada. Courtney also finished
seventh in the winter rankings and twelfth in the summer
rankings.

Men 35 - 39
The men's submasters division was a small one this year;
however, there is a lot of talent in the select group of men
that qualify for our runner rankings. Leading the charge this
year was Chris Chattin of Columbia, who spent half the year at
the top of the rankings pile. Chattin took the title in the
spring, when a record 26 men earned rankings, and stayed on top
throughout the summer, a feat he accomplished by winning the
Annapolis 10 Miler in 54:54. In the spring, Chattin finished
33rd at the Cherry Blossom Ten Miler in 52:10. Chattin also
earned the third place ranking in the fall, where he turned in
his best performance at the Baltimore Marathon, where he
finished fifth in 2:29:14.
Winchester's Mark Stickley (photo above) is our runner-up this
year, a slot he
earned by beating out Chris Chattin in the fall rankings by
crossing the line in 31:39 at the Georgetown Classic 10K.
Stickley also held third place in the spring rankings based on
the strength of his 2:39:12 performance at the Shamrock
Marathon. For his third ranking, he placed sixth in the winter
rankings.
Mark Hoon of Kensington also had two top three finishes this
year, a strong enough showing to earn third place for the year.
In the winter, Hoon grabbed the third slot by beating out Ted
Poulos in head-to-head competition at the RRCA Club Challenge.
In the summer, he got his top three finish with an overall race
victory at Riley's Rumble Half Marathon in 1:17:25 and a 25:45
finish at the Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K.
The group's most prolific runner, McLean's Ted Poulos, is our
fourth ranked runner this year, posting top five finishes in
three of the four ranking periods, and a sixth place finish in
the fourth. A few highlights from Poulos's year include a top-50
finish at the Cherry Blossom Ten Miler, fourth at the Annapolis
Ten Miler, and a top five showing at the George Washington
Parkway Classic 10K.
Finally, rounding out the top five in the group is Virginia
Beach's Dai Roberts, who earned his best ranking in the winter,
where he was the runner-up based on strong showings at the
Tidewater Striders tune-up series. Roberts was also sixth in the
spring rankings.

Men 40 - 44
Douglasville, Georgia's John Tuttle is one of the country's
premier masters runners, and he frequently comes to the
Washington area for important races. As such, he grabbed the top
slot in our rankings in both the spring and fall seasons, the
most competitive periods during 2001. We are, therefore,
awarding him the number one ranking for the year. Tuttle ran an
incredible 50:16 at the Cherry Blossom Ten Miler, and managed to
turn in 10K equivalents under 31:00 in all four of his races
last spring. In the fall, he was back on top as a result of a
fourth place finish at the Georgetown Classic 10K in 31:28.
Second in the division for 2001 belongs to Lanham's Jim Hage,
who was on top in the winter rankings, after finishing eighth at
the POMOCO Half Marathon in 1:10:51 and an overall race victory
at the Jingle Bell Run for Arthritis 10K. Hage, ranked in all
four ranking periods, never fell out of the top four.
Baltimore's Dave Berardi made a strong effort at chasing down
Tuttle and Hage this year, and performed well enough to collect
third place for the year. Berardi finished three of the four
ranking periods in third place, and was fourth in the other. As
a result of this consistency, it would be unfair to rank Berardi
any lower than third.
Joe Abernethy of College Park is our fourth ranked runner, a
berth he earns by having a great fall season in which he
finished the as runner-up to Tuttle in the rankings, edging out
Dave Berardi by beating him by two seconds in head-to-head
competition at the Outback Corridor Classic 8K. Abernethy also
finished the summer ranking period in fourth, just behind
Berardi, and was seventh in the spring rankings.
Finally, finishing off the top five in this very competitive
masters division is Dai Roberts of Virginia Beach; he is the
only man not yet included in the rankings to hold the top slot.
He earned his top ranking in the summer by turning in a 1:10:51
at the Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon, representing the fastest
time of any man ranked during the period. Roberts's other
ranking was a sixth place finish in the spring rankings

Men 45 - 49
(Photo: Jim Adams of Towson, MD is the 11th ranked runner in
this division.)Top honors in the 45-49 division belong to Jim Whitnah for his
first place finish in the spring rankings, and his third-in-
division result in the winter rankings. In the spring, he turned
in a 55:45 at the Cherry Blossom Ten Miler and also finished in
the top fifteen of the Pike's Peek 10K.
Second for 2001 belongs to Sterling's Chuck Moeser in
recognition of his divisional win in the winter rankings, and
his third place finish in the spring rankings. Moeser's 1:13:01
finish at the POMOCO Half Marathon was enough to secure his top
ranking in the winter, and the 33:36 that he ran at the St.
Patrick's Day 10K was good enough to grab third place in the
spring rankings.
In the summer we had David Webster on top, and that, in
conjunction with his second place finish in the winter rankings
and fourth in the fall, is enough to earn the third place
ranking for 2001. Dan Lawson of Gaithersburg had two top three
rankings this year, and that is enough to earn the fourth slot
for 2001. In the fall, he ran 34:07 at the Georgetown Classic
10K to secure the third rankings. In the spring, however, he
crossed the line a mere 30 seconds behind Whitnah at the Cherry
Blossom Ten Miler, to gain the runner-up slot in the very
competitive and large spring rankings.
Finally, Develand Campbell, who is constantly doing battle with
the top men in this bracket, is our fifth ranked runner for the
year. Campbell had two top five finishes this year. In the
winter, he was just a minute behind Webster at the Jingle Bell
Race, crossing the line in 36:10 to earn the fourth slot in the
rankings. In the spring, he and Webster did battle head to head
several times, with each man winning once. In the spring,
Webster had the fastest time between the two, so he was ranked
fourth, and Campbell was fifth. Regardless, this performance is
enough to keep Campbell in the top five in the year-end rankings.

Men 50 - 54
Williamsburg's Rick Platt is the victor for 2001 in this age
division. The only man to hold the top ranking more than once
during the year, Platt was on top in both the spring and summer
rankings and was runner-up in the fall rankings. Platt earned
his top ranking in the spring the hard way--with head- to-head
competition, beating out his age group rival, Mick Slonaker,
twice. In the summer, he earned the top slot with a 1:24:39
showing at the Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon, coupled with a 35:37
at the Urbanna Waterfront 10K.
Paul Ryan of Arlington is our second ranked runner by virtue of
top three rankings in three ranking periods. In the fall, Ryan
had the five fastest times run by any man in this division,
which was enough to earn the top ranking, ahead of Platt. In the
summer rankings, Ryan was runner-up to Platt, a place he earned
with very fast running, including a 16:03 finish at the Mitzvah
5K. In addition, Ryan was third in the spring and winter
rankings.
Third place this year belongs to Mick Slonaker, who had his best
ranking period in the spring, where he finished second, just
behind Platt. Slonaker was fourth in the fall and spring
rankings. David Lowe of Gaithersburg is just behind Slonaker,
grabbing the fourth slot in the year-end rankings. Lowe's best
ranking was second in the winter rankings. However, he was
fourth in the spring and summer and fifth in the fall, just
behind Slonaker.
Finally, fifth place belongs to Bill Hart, who had his best
result in the winter rankings, where he managed to grab the top
slot with a 1:18:50 at the POMOCO Half Marathon. Unfortunately,
the only other ranking he had was a sixth place finish this
fall; therefore, fifth place in the overall rankings was the
best we could justify, after looking at the other performances
turned in by men in this group.

Men 55 - 59
Alexandria's Patrick Griffith was the top ranked runner in three
of the four ranking periods this year, and he is undisputedly
the runner of the year for the 55-59 division. For most of the
year, Griffith ran the fastest times of any ranked runner. For
example, in twelve outings last spring, Griffith was always
under a 40:00 10K equivalent time. In the spring, he owned six
of the seven fastest times run by men over 55. It is, therefore,
evident that, as the fastest runner in this age division,
Griffith is well deserving of the top ranking for 2001.
Steve Frisk of Alexandria is the only other man in this group to
occupy the top slot during 2001. Frisk accomplished this by
earning the two fastest times run by men in this group last
winter. His best race was an 18:18 showing at the Tidewater
Striders Run for Independence 5K. Frisk's other ranking was
fourth in the spring, a ranking period which included a 30:10
finish at the Shamrock Masters 8K.
Keswick's Dan Murray had his best ranking period this fall,
where he had race victories over strong age group competitors
such as Jim Noone and Emmons Welch. His best race this fall was
a 1:02:47 at the BB&T Ten Miler. Murray's other ranking was a
fifth place finish in the spring, during which he turned in a
1:04:56 at the Charlottesville Ten Miler. As a result, he has
earned third place for 2001.
Fourth in the year-end rankings belongs to Ed LeCates of York,
who had rankings in three of the four ranking periods. LeCates
rose as high as third in the summer rankings, and also turned in
a top five showing (fourth) in the fall rankings. A few
highlights of LeCates's year include an 18:48 showing at the St.
Agnes Labor Day 5K, as well as a 39:20 at the Georgetown Classic
10K and an 18:15 at the Baltimore Fila 5K.
Finally, the last berth in the top five amidst this group
belongs to Jim Noone, who earns his slot with two top five
rankings this year. Noone was fourth in the summer rankings, and
fifth in the fall rankings--two honors he earned with prolific
and consistent running.

Men 60 - 64
(Photo: Warren and Priscila Prunella are both ranked. Warren is
11th in the 60-64 division and Priscila is 7th in the 55-59
division.)Columbia's John Elliott was the top man twice this year, and we
awarded him the crown as top man in this division. In the
spring, Elliott ran an incredible 37:42 at the Pike's Peek 10K,
as well as a 1:04:08 at Cherry Blossom. In the summer, he had a
19:06 showing at the Meadfest 5K. In earning his two top
rankings, he beat out our year-end runner-up, Mel Williams,
twice, while finishing just behind Williams once.
Williams, to his credit, beat Elliott in the winter rankings by
turning in five 10K equivalents under 40:00, a feat no one else
could match last winter. His best race this summer was a 1:22:48
at the Tidewater Striders Tune Up 20K. In addition to his top
ranking in the winter, Williams was runner-up in the other three
ranking periods. Williams's year included a 3:11:13 triumph at
the 2001 Marine Corps Marathon and a 2:56:53 at the Shamrock
Marathon.
Bob Spearing of Arlington grabs the third slot for the year. He
was fourth in the winter rankings; in the spring, he finished
third, on the strength of a 40:39 at the St. Patrick's Day 10K
and a 1:08:04 at the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler.
Running in close behind Spearing is Chan Robbins, who rose as
high as number three in the rankings this year. In the fall,
Robbins was running fine, with a 20:11 at the Goblin Gallop 5K
and 20:13 at the Vanguard Run for Recovery. Robbins also had a
strong summer, finishing fourth in the rankings after finishing
the Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K in 33:34, to finish in the top
thirty runners. Robbins also earned a fifth place finish in the
winter rankings.
Skip Mullaney of Charlottesville is our fifth ranked runner this
year, a title he earns with consistent running in the two
periods in which he held a ranking. In the winter, he managed to
grab the third slot ahead of age group competitors like Chan
Robbins and Bob Spearing. In the summer, he finished fifth, just
behind Robbins.

Men 65 - 69
The men's 65-69 division is a remarkably fast and large
division, with significant head-to-head competition. Leading the
pack for 2001 is Sparks' George Yannakakis, who earned the top
ranking in two of the four ranking periods, and was never
outside the top three. In the winter rankings, he had six
qualifying times, and was unbeaten by anyone ranked below him.
In the summer, when he got his other ranking, Yannakakis shot
down tough competition from Richard Williams at the Annapolis
Ten Miler, where he ran 1:15:53.
In the spring, Kitty Hawk's Tom Ray was on hand and managed to
steal the top slot from Yannakakis with a 1:09:15 at the Cherry
Blossom Ten Miler (well ahead of Williams and Yannakakis), and a
34:00 at the Shamrock Masters 8K. Ray's other ranking was a
third place finish in the fall rankings.
Richard Williams of Alexandria, who had two runner-up finishes
this year (spring and summer), is our third ranked runner for
the year. In the spring, Williams beat Yannakakis at the Cherry
Blossom by less than fifteen seconds. However, that was enough
to secure the runner-up position in that period.
Larry Dickerson, who spent the first half of the year in this
division, grabs the fourth slot for 2001. Dickerson's best
result was a second-in-division finish in the winter rankings;
however, he also earned third place in the summer rankings.
Finally, rounding out the top five men in this category is Chris
Catoe of Virginia Beach. Catoe, who earned rankings in all four
periods, had his best ranking period in the in the fall, where
he finished fourth out of twenty ranked men. In the fall, Catoe
had five solid qualifying times, including a 36:22 at the
Neptune Festival 8K.

Men 70 - 74
The men's 70-74 division is generally a select group, and this
year only four men managed to earn the required two rankings
during the year to appear in the best of 2001 rankings. Burke's
Larry Dickerson, who aged up into this group mid-year, is our
overall champion, as he earned the top slot in both the summer
and the fall. This decision is backed up by the results of the
fall's Georgetown Classic 10K, where Dickerson went head-to-head
with year-end runner up Jack McMahon and defeated him, running
in in 47:08.
Jack McMahon, frequently the most prolific runner in this group,
is our runner-up for 2001. McMahon, who aged up early in the
year, was the only man in this group to earn rankings in each of
the four ranking periods. He held the top slot in the winter
rankings, and then held on to second place for the rest of the
year.
Falls Church's Don McCarten is our third place finisher this
year, a ranking he gains based on his second place finish in the
winter, and his third place finish in the spring rankings, which
actually included six runners in this group.
Finally, George Waxter of Frederick rounds out the men's 70-74
division, earning his place with rankings in the summer and
fall. Waxter's best race in these two periods was a 23:40 at the
Baltimore Fila 5K.

Men 75 & Over
Seven men over the age of 75 turned in two rankings this year
and have earned a slot in the year-end rankings. Bill Osburn of
Bethesda, always one of the group's most prolific runners, is
our top man for 2001. In all four ranking periods, he managed to
remain in the top three runners, capturing the top slot in the
winter. Throughout the year, Osburn consistently met and
defeated age-group competitors and was on hand for many local
races.
Second in this division for 2001 belongs to Oxon Hill's Ray
Blue, who played runner-up twice this year, once in the spring
and in the winter. In the spring, he actually managed to earn a
ranking higher than Osburn, a feat he accomplished with a 27:07
5K at the DC Rape Crisis Center Challenge.
Walt Washburn earned rankings in all four ranking periods this
year, and they were consistent enough that we have awarded him
the third place rank for the year. Washburn's highest finish was
third in the summer rankings, where he posted nine qualifying
times, including a 1:32:30 at the WaWa Hartwood 10 Miler.
Virginia Beach's Cokey Daman, one of the few octogenarians in
the group, has been awarded the fourth slot in this group.
Always difficult to fit into the rankings due to the fact that
he rarely runs against his age group competition due to
geography, Daman had some strong performances this year. He ran
2:07:50 at the POMOCO Half Marathon last winter, and 2:18:16 at
the Norfolk Half Marathon this fall.
Finally, the last slot in the men's over 75 top five belongs to
Dixon Hemphill, who earned two rankings this year. Hemphill was
fourth in the winter rankings and fifth in the spring rankings.
His best race was a 56:18 at Pike's Peek 10K this spring.
