Younger than Springtime 2006 WRR Summer Runner Rankings By James Moreland November/December 2006 Washington Running Report
School's out for summer; school's out forever! --Alice Cooper - 1972 Summertime brings lots more races; many are shorter distances.
This period there were 225 races with more than 75,000 runners
running a record 3,341 ranked times. Far more young runners
showed up to play the field. More than 140 teens from both sexes
earned rankings. One race, the FAB 5K, was so chock full of fast
teens that 43% of the times were ranked times. Thirty-one races were major races (500 or more finishers).
Seventeen races had more than 50 ranked runners. The Rockville
Rotary Twilight 8K dominated the period with 163 ranked times.
The Annapolis 10 Mile was next with 100 ranked times. The huge
Lawyers Have Heart 10K was just behind at 99. If you combine the
10K and 20K runs at Leesburg you have 106 ranked runners. The
Rock 'n' Roll HM with 16,100 finishers was twice as large as any
other race and contained 73 elite finishers. Of the nine 5Ks
with more than 50 ranked runners, the Race for the Cure was by
far the biggest with 8,200 finishers, but six other 5Ks had more
ranked times, including the Capital Crescent 5K with 20% of the
times ranked. 1,304 different men and 984 different women ran at least one
qualifying time.
381 men and 310 women were ranked, breaking spring's record
numbers. Washington, DC went back to being under-represented with just
three races. Maryland had 93 races with the largest groups being
in Baltimore and Columbia. The larger state of Virginia had 129
races, Richmond taking the lead with 15. Runners who win the race or win their division in a race earn an
asterisk beside their name. Open runners only get an asterisk
for an overall win. The Speed Alone (reflected at the top of
each division) is the fastest qualifying time run for each
division. In red, it means the division champion ran it. For the Open runners, we are listing how they did compared to
the last ranking period. Runners who stayed in the same spot
show only their number. Runners not in the last ranking period
are NEW. All other runners go up (higher) or down (lower) with a
number representing how many places from the last ranking period. N = New, U = Up, D = Down
