2006 Fall WRR Runner Rankings
Women's Division
By James Moreland January/February 2007 For the Washington Running Report
Photo by Brightroom.com: Sarah Spalding (25) of Washington,
DC is 9th overall at the Veteran's Day 10K in 40:27. It earns
her 32nd place in the rankings.
Open Women
Quantico HM, 1:14:25, 10K = 33:38
Only four of the top ten runners from last period are back.
Many of the top runners must be taking a break or racing out of
the area. Three of the returning runners are also champions of
their own division as well. Two of the runners in the top
eleven were the very first runner of either sex to cross the
finish line.
Mary Kate Bailey of Arlington, VA looks good for top honors.
She learned from the Leesburg 20K in the heat of the summer.
She ramped up her engines and ran a national class Quantico HM
in 1:14:25 (10K = 33:38). Her other race was a pedestrian St.
Joseph's Medical Center 5K overall win in 17:19 (10K = 36:03),
much slower in pace than the half marathon.
Fourth place Alemgena Desta of Silver Spring, MD must have been
training the same way. She was second at the Medical Center
race in 17:42 (10K = 36:51). Indeed, she was second behind
Vanessa Hunter at the Press Club 5K the day before that race,
running 17:33 (10K = 36:32). She had two more second place
overall finishes. When she got the hang of it, she won three
other races. She capped the period with a win at the always-
competitive PVI 5K in 16:45 (10K = 34:52).
Third place Maria-Elena Calle of Richmond, VA coasted to a
36:23 overall win at the American Family Fitness 10K in October
besting second ranked sub master and 14th open woman Maureen
Ackerly by a good 150 meters. Then she let out all of the stops
at the nTelos 8K with a blistering 27:15 (10K = 34:36). That
was good for sixth overall, one place out of a truly elite
field earning top five money. Her victory lap was in 18:13 (10K
= 37:56), more than three minutes ahead of second place, the
following week at the first of many Jingle Bell races to come.
Aurora Scott (16) of Chesapeake, VA moved up three spots to the
runner-up slot. Her overall win at the Governor's Land 5K in
16:37 (10K 34:36) was complimented well by two more overall
wins. Her two 5Ks in 17:16 and 17:08 trumped Calle's "trips."
Fifth place Jackie Gruendel of Burke, VA had a relaxed 17:54
(10K = 37:16) win in late October. Then she got back to work in
November and smoked a win at the Vienna Jaycees Turkey Trot 5K
in 16:52 (10K = 35:07). Next, Alisa Harvey of Manassas, VA
mastered the Army 10 Miler in 59:00 (10K = 35:27). Sub master
champ Elena Orlova of Gaithersburg, MD made a veteran move at
the 10K winning in 35:58 for seventh place. Army runner-up Erin
Swain of Clifton, VA outlasts Johanna Allen of Woodbridge, VA
59:57 (10K = 36:02) to 60:06 (10K = 36:07) in the battle for
eighth. Phebe Ko's third overall 2:49:22 (10K = 36:12) at the
Baltimore Marathon ties with Julie Culley's first human across
the line at the Diane Geppi-Aikens Memorial 5K in 17:23). Ko
breaks the tie with a 17:33 to 17:55 head-to-head win at
Susie's Cause 5K.

Photo by Brightroom.com: Anna Oleynik of Gaithersburg, MD is
runner-up on the teen division as well as 23rd in the Elite
Division, finishing the Parks HM 4th overall in 1:23:43.Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon, 1:18:17, 10K = 35:22
The teens are back in school. The division drops from 67 in the
summer to 33. No matter. Get used to seeing the name Aurora
Scott on the leader board. Eighteen-year-old Anna Oleynik of
Gaithersburg, MD rushed out to an impressive win at the
Frederick Fair 5K in 18:07 (10K = 37:43). Scott started the
demolition in late October with her first of three overall wins
at the W&M Homecoming 5K in 17:16 (10K = 35:57). Oleynik's
1:23:43 (10K = 37:50) Parks HM was great. Scott ended the last
period with 1:18:17. In November, she toned up with a 17:08
(10K = 35:40) at the Race for Breath 5K. Oleynik continued to
pound out a total of seven age group wins with three overall
victories as well as a second overall at the Rockville 10K in
37:48. Scott served up the piece de resistance. The last
weekend of period at the lightning fast Governor's Land 5K she
ran away from the entire field [that means men, women, and
children] for an overall win in 16:37 (10K = 34:36). That is
one second off the Virginia state record.
Talented Jane Gay of Roanoke, VA owns the town with two overall
wins at the 5K. Her best race was the WDF there in 18:27 (10K =
38:25). Carrie Wortham of Richmond, VA is 17th. Her nTelos 8K
time of 32:06 (10K = 40:45) bests Brittany Rooks of Baltimore,
MD with her Medical Center Run 5K in 19:35 (10K = 40:46).
Wortham's PACE Race 5K in 19:23 (10K = 40:21) is
microscopically ahead of Rooks's best race. Twelve-year-old
Rooks gets the lean with her overall victory at the NCT Trail
HM in 1:29:24 (10K = 40:24).

Veterans Day 10K, 35:58
What has happened to the sub masters? Only three of the twenty
ranked runners returned to the rankings this period. Elena
Orlova of Germantown, MD nearly always has to look back to see
her competition. Amazingly, the next ten places were nowhere to
be found!
Anna Catanese of Mechanicsville, VA would turn forty during the
period, so she sounded the opening charge at the Reveille 5K
the first week in September with 19:23 (10K = 40:21). Colleen
Pak of Virginia Beach, VA ended the month by moving to the
front with a second overall Mulberry Island HM in 1:27:38 (10K
= 39:36). She bolstered that mid October with a fifth overall
Fleet Feet HM in 1:24:19 (10K = 38:06). A day earlier, Maureen
Ackerly of Richmond, VA showed she was the fittest, finishing
second overall at the American Family Fitness 10K in 37:03.
Catanese was next in line with 39:57 but she was now behind
both of these runners.
The following week Orlova stepped up to the plate and cracked a
36:56 at the Home Run 10K, breaking the tape first. November
meant an overall win for her at the Cardinal 5K in 17:36 (10K =
36:39), two minutes ahead of sixth place Elizabeth Feldman of
Chevy Chase, MD. Ackerly lobbed a shot across the bow, winning
the Richmond Marathon outright in 2:53:14 (10K = 37:02).
Winning the rankings with a marathon is very hard to do. Orlova
answered right back with an impressive win of her own at the
Veterans Day 10K in 35:58. Then, as an after thought, showed
she was the boss at the King of the Road 5K in 17:21 (10K =
36:07).
Catanese holds the fourth spot, beating Julie Smith of
Tappahannock, VA at the nTelos 8K 30:27 to 31:21.

(41) of Lavale, MD was the 2nd master in 33:11 at the Shamrock
8K.Army 10 Miler, 59:00, 10K = 35:27
The big races of the fall period are nearly always marathons,
even the ones with the most ranked runners. The exceptions are
the Army 10 Miler, the Veterans Day 10K, and the nTelos 8K. The
division champion, Alisa Harvey of Manassas, VA, continued to
lock it down. First, she took an overall win at the second
largest 8K in the area. Her Fair Lakes 8K time was 29:28 (10K =
37:24) She topped the masters 5K with a fourth overall placing
at the Paul VI 5K in 17:27 (10K = 36:20) the following week. No
other master finished within a minute of her. Then, she made
history as a masters runner, winning Army in 59:00 (10K =
35:27). She dodged the bad weather for the other two huge races
and won the Marine Corps 10K outright in a leisurely 38:34.
Martha Merz of Annandale, VA is back. She tied her running
shoes on and blasted Army in 61:39 (10K = 37:03) to win the
runner-up spot. Her masters win at the Veterans Day 10K in
38:21 sealed it. Kelly Dworak of Burke, VA danced around the
period with 5Ks, including two overall wins. Still, her best
time, at the Poolesville 5K in 19:17 (10K = 40:09), did not
send shivers down the competition's spine. Then she popped a
mid October Fleet Feet HM in 1:24:21 (10K = 38:07), sending
Linda Sawvell of Newport News, VA, with her top race there in
1:26:09 (10K = 38:56), back to fifth place.
Linda Foley had the second fastest 5K at the Herndon Turkey
Trot in 18:31 (10K = 38:33) to take the fourth spot. In the
topsy-turvy period many runners had racing times all over the
place. Bad weather on normally fast courses and tired legs from
longer races made for unpredictable times all over the board.
Head-to-head was not as accurate as race time and the Great
Allegany 15K ski slope produces some incredible times. Rebecca
Nathan of Arlington, VA bested both Foley and Grillo at
Veterans in 39:48 and at Army in her 64:56 (10K = 39:01) over
Foley 65:02 (10K = 39:05), which nearly vaulted her up two
places. Sawvell ran the Hampton 10K in 39:50 and stayed close
at the Yorktown 10 Mile in 65:52 (10K = 39:34).

Army 10 Miler, 64:20, 10K = 38:40
With DiPietro absent and Conant stuck in summer gear, it seemed
as if ramped-up Win Persina needed only to pass Valerie Plyer
for the crown. Persina had nine age group wins and Plyler had
seven. Both had their best race the last day of September.
Persina did the Gulf Coast Relief 5K in 19:27 (10K = 40:30),
ending the period at the King of the Road 5K in 19:28 (10K =
40:32). She had two other 5Ks faster than Plyler's best, one at
Mulberry Island in 19:37 (10K = 40:51).
Still, even before the big November showdown at nTelos, Andrea
Wright of Charlottesville, VA put the area on notice with her
Pepsi 10K overall win in 39:53. The weather was bad Veterans
Day Sunday and Persina settled for a 41:20 win. The day before
Wright shut the door, winning the nTelos 8K in 31:50 (10K =
40:25) over Plyler 32:25 (10K = 41:09) and fourth place Deb
Romig of Richmond, VA in 32:30 (10K = 41:16).
Debi Bernardes of King George, VA was next at nTelos in 33:08
(10K = 42:04). Though her best race, the Jimbo's PR Challenge
5K in 19:52 (10K = 41:22) was slightly faster than Cindy
Conant's Rockville 10K in 41:27, Conant gets the fifth spot
with an overall win at the "still with that hill" Kensington 8K
in 32:53 (10K = 41:52). Leisa Ensle had the fastest marathon
and a swift Stonewall Jackson 20 Mile in 2:24:20 (10K = 41:29)
to goose the runners just in front of her seventh placing.

Great Allegany 15K 63:17 - 10K = 41:15
Betty Blank of Falls Church, VA and Alison Suckling of Arnold,
MD were again the favorites and would again meet at the
Veterans 10K for a rematch. This year the weather was horrible
and the times suffered. Blank packed it in early. Last year,
she was about thirty meters back in 42:20. This year the wind,
rain, and cold made the race no fun. Suckling ran 44:07; Blank
46:18. This race had a lot to do with the final standings.
Blank had led the way with Army 10 miler in 70:57 (10K =
42:38). Suckling retained her lead over Blank the next week,
winning the Run for Kathy 5K in 20:28 (10K = 42:37). Blank's
second best effort was a Cranberry Crawl win in 21:37 versus
Suckling's third best time of 21:39 at St. Joseph's 5K. Neither earned the crown. Debbie Flynn bided her time. Then on
October 21st she zoomed the Pace Race 5K in 20:06 (10K = 41:51)
to snatch the crown. She stamped paid to the spot the last
weekend of the period at the King [Queen] of the Road 5K in
20:10 (10K = 41:59). The next three spots were also very close. Reclusive Margaret
Starnes of Street, MD rarely ventures from the northeast
corridor. She ran the Harford 5K in 21:26 (10K 44:37), third
woman of forty-six. That same last day of September, Dorothy
Winn raced the Neptune Festival 8K in 35:05 (10K = 44:32). This
was the third largest 8K of the period with 609 finishers.
June McDaniels of Virginia Beach, VA was close behind, racing a
5K in 21:29 (10K = 44:44). Their second best races were in
reverse order with McDaniels first in 21:40, followed by
Starnes with an overall win in 21:51 and Winn in 21:53.

Fair Lakes 8K, 34:30, 10K = 43:48
Last period Sandra Adams owned the field with Barbara Mathewson
absent. This period Mathewson storms back with the three
fastest times and a championship. Still, it would have been
real interesting if Adams had run more than just her 73:21 (10K
= 44:05) Army 10 Miler. Karen Erb's third place Army would have
placed her in the mix. Better still, Naomi Stanford really
improved from last period's 7:22 pace 4 miler to 34:30 at Fair
Lakes for her solo effort.
Racing once a month, Mathewson's Fleet Feet HM in 1:40:03 (10K
= 45:13) tops all, including third place Alice Franks of
Rockville, MD. Franks ran the Parks HM in 1:44:38 (10K =
47:17). In September, she ran 34:40 (10K 44:01) at the Neptune
Festival 8K. Fourth place Linda Gulick of Richmond, VA had the
next fastest 8K at nTelos in 36:16 (10K = 46:02). Gulick also
had the fastest 5K through the first half of the period, racing
the Heritage 5K in 22:41 (10K = 47:14). Franks had six age
group wins of eight races. Her two second place finishes rank
her third. At Army, she ran 76:00 (10K = 45:40) and at Fair
Lakes 37:18 (10K = 47:21).
Maria Shields of Davidsonville, MD ran the Down's Park 5 Mile
in 37:28 (47:17) to bolster her top finish at the Halloween 5K
in 21:46 (10K = 45:19) for the runner-up spot. Mathewson ended
discussion at the champion maker Governor's Land 5K in 21:24
(10K = 44:33).

division at the Rockville 10K in 47:39.Rockville 10K, 47:39
Chris Craun of Bethesda, MD appears to be aiming to start a new
dynasty. In late September, she ran the Parks HM in 1:51:26
(10K = 50:21). Runner-up Mary Saunders had started the period
setting that standard at the Danville HM in 1:46:47 (10K =
48:15). Then Saunders rested for two months before again
setting the standard. This time her nTelos 8K in 38:01 (10K =
48:16) pushed BJ King's Down's Park 5M in 39:24 (10K = 49:41)
back a place, though that course is, at her pace, about 20
seconds long. King's best race was the Halloween 5K in 23:13
(10K = 48:20).
Meanwhile, Craun followed her first effort with the fastest
race of the period, the Rockville 10K in 47:39. Then she pops
right back the next week for the country's largest 10 miler. At
Army, her 85:52 (10K = 51:36) was nearly three minutes ahead of
sixth place Helen Price of Williamsburg, VA. Price ended the
period with a better effort at the Cape Henry 10 Mile in
1:26:38 (10K = 52:08). Indeed, fourth place Andrea Hess ran the
fastest 10-mile of all at Yorktown in 1:24:04 (10K= 50:31) in
early November. Hess started the period at the Pepsi 10K in
51:54.
Before that happened, Craun finished October, winning the
Marine Corps Marathon in 3:50:21 (10K = 49:14). Then she capped
the period at the Veterans 10K in 47:53. That was a much better
race with the windy conditions than her other race. Though
King's best 10K was at the rolling hills of the Cold Turkey in
Edgewater at 49:04, she only managed 51:50 at the tough weather
Veterans 10K.

Governor's Landing 5K, 23:18, 10K = 48:31
Betty Smith of Rockville, MD made her mark first by running
some Boston Marathon qualifying times and then busting the
fastest 5Ks in the last year. This period, she had a fine
Marine Corps Marathon in 4:46:37 (10K = 61:16) but was sent
back a place as Barbara Szoradi of Washington, DC won her age
group in 4:29:26 (10K = 57:36). Smith's best race was the
Veterans Day 10K in 56:59. Szoradi again overmatched her,
racing just half the distance at the Labrecque Classic 5K in
26:25 (10K = 55:00).
Then the division champion stepped quickly to the plate and
rounded all the bases. New to the division Joan Coven of
Williamsburg, VA easily had the top four times. Officially,
Tami Graf's five-year-old record 25:11 is still the Virginia
state record. However, Coven has run three races considerably
faster. At the Humane Society 5K, she ran 23:49 (10K = 49:35),
a time that would qualify her for the 50-54 division rankings.
Two weeks later, she cemented things with Homecoming 5K in
24:29 (10K = 50:58). The following week, she ran the Yorktown
10 Mile in 1:24:26 (10K = 50:44).
The final weekend of the period she uncorks a 23:18 (10K =
48:31) at the Governor's Land 5K. That would qualify her for
the 45-49 division and sixth place in both the 50-54 and 55-59
divisions as well as fifth in the 60-64 division.
Mary Kate Berglund of Richmond, VA continues the youth
movement, as the top four runners are all just sixty-five. Her
Midlothian Blaze 5K in 28:31 (10K = 59:22). Arlowene Garland of
Warsaw, VA was fifth.

Tami Graf of Lusby, MD owns one-third of the 24 ranked times,
winning all eight of those races. Already the 5K record-holder
for Virginia (28:31), she added the half marathon to her
resume. Her Fleet Feet HM in 2:05:37 (10K = 56:46) was easily
the top race. She also ran the Maryland Senior Olympics 5K in
27:57 as well as the Fair Lakes 8K in 47:01 (10K = 59:41).
Nancy Patron of Williamsburg, VA dipped her toes into the new
age group about the same time, though not enough to cool the
fire she set to the old records. While Graf was at the HM, she
raced a 28:44 (10K = 59:49) at the Heritage Humane Society 5K.
Then she capped the period at the Governor's Land 5K, setting a
course record in 29:05 (10K = 60:33).
Betty Dameron of Fredericksburg, VA edges Lilli Metzger of
Silver Spring, MD. They both ran a 5K and an 8K. Dameron also
ran the only longer-than-8K race besides Graf's HM, the Army 10
Miler.

Yvonne Aasen of Severna Park, MD used to be the first person to
go at the Cold Turkey 10K race. The race was formerly an age-
graded race with runners starting in reverse age order. She
also bested Martha Trimmer at the Maryland Senior Olympics 5K
in September. Jacqueline O'Neil had the fastest 10K at the
Veteran's 10K.
