Open WomenAlison Holinka of Williamsburg, who was inadvertently left out
of the winter rankings but should have earned a top five
placement last issue, headed north this spring to run in
Washington, DC. In doing so, she turned in the fastest time, and
captures the crown in the open division. Holinka crossed the
line at the Microsoft-USO Defenders 10 Miler in 56:15, good
enough for third place. She was also tenth overall at the Cherry
Blossom Ten Miler in 56:45, besting strong local competition
from runners like Naoko Ishibe, Misti Demko, and Bea Marie
Altieri. She backs up this performance with a comparatively slow
35:02 at the Sallie Mae 10K. At only 22, Holinka is clearly
going to be a factor in this division for some time.
Serving as runner-up this spring is Misti Demko, who traveled to
Virginia twice to run this spring. Demko was five seconds behind
Holinka at Cherry Blossom, and got her second time at the
Shamrock Sportsfest, where she finished the 8K in a blistering
27:11.
Naoko Ishibe, the only other woman in the rankings to turn in
10K equivalent times under 35:00, a feat she accomplished at the
both Pike's Peek 10K and the Cherry Blossom, grabs the third
slot. Ishibe finished 23 seconds behind Demko, in 57:13, at the
Cherry Blossom race, for 12th place overall.
Our fourth ranked runner is Hilary Cairns of Washington, who
raced well at the St. Patrick's Day 10K. Cairns beat tough age
group competition from Sharon Servidio by only six seconds,
crossing the line in 36:56.
Finally, grabbing the last spot in the top five in the Open
division is former Washington area resident Bea Marie Altieri,
who earns her spot with two rankings, including a 16th place
finish at the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler, where she ran 59:41.
Altieri's other qualifying time was an overall race victory at
Clyde's 10K, where she crossed the line in 37:12.

Women 35-39
Alisa Harvey of Manassas has gone from the top of one division
to the top of the next. Harvey won the St. Patrick's Day 10K in
36:29, which was enough to put her past divisional competitor
Patty Fulton for the top slot this spring. She also beat Fulton
again in April, running 59:00 at the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler for
a top 15 finish.
In second place in this division is Silver Spring's Patty
Fulton, who was second behind Harvey at the Brain Tumor 5K,
crossing the line in 17:51. To her credit, Fulton also had the
fastest time among the ranked women in this age group, racing to
the line in 35:36 at Pike's Peek 10K. Fulton also won the MCRRC
Piece of Cake 10K.
Laurel's Vanessa Cox is our third place finisher in the spring
rankings, a spot she earns on the strength a 22nd place finish
at the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler, where she covered the course in
1:02:28. Cox also was second at Clyde's 10K, where she finished
in 38:53.
Fourth, fifth, and sixth place this spring were hotly contested.
In the end, we awarded fourth place to Laura Freix, in
recognition of her overall race victory at the Run vs. Row 10K,
where she finished in 38:53. She also won the Westfield 5K, and
was fifth at the Clarendon Gold's Gym 5K. Fifth and sixth belong
to Jeanne and Monica Grillo who ran head to head all three times
they ran this spring--and Jeanne came out on top all three
times.
Their closest race came at the Pike's Peek 10K, where Jeanne ran
just three seconds faster than Monica, to finish in 37:38. As a
result, Jeanne grabs the fifth ranking, and Monica the sixth.

Women 40-44
Donna Moore of Silver Spring earns the top position in this
division, as the result of her stellar performance at three big
spring races. She had the three fastest times among the ranked
women this spring, earning a 36:41 at the Sallie Mae 10K, a
1:01:29 at the Microsoft USO-Defenders 10 Miler, and a 37:18 at
the St. Patrick's Day 10K for a top five finish.
Annapolis's Jill Hargis is our second finisher in this division,
as she was the only other ranked woman to run any 10K equivalent
times under 38:00. Hargis's best result was a 29:46 at the
Shamrock Masters 8K, where she was the first local runner and
second overall woman. Her other qualifying time was a1:03:03 at
the Cherry Pit 10 Miler.
Eleanor Simonsick did not run against much of the tough age
group competition this spring. However, when she ran, she did so
quickly enough that we have awarded her the third place ranking.
Simonsick ran well at the Port to Fort 4 Miler, coming across
the line in 24:32, fast enough for an overall race victory.
The fourth and fifth slots were determined at the Cherry Blossom
10 Miler. Sneaking into the fourth slot is Beth McCann, who
earns her place with a strong performance at the Sallie Mae 10K,
running 39:27 for third in the division. The Falls Church native
also had a good race at the St. Patrick's Day 10K, where she ran
40:03, for ninth overall and second in the division, behind
Moore. Fifth place belongs to Doris Windsand-Dausma of
Frederick, who crossed the line at the Cherry Blossom just over
30 seconds behind McCann.

Women 45-49
Germantown's Linda Wack had a prolific and fast spring, posting
three qualifying times which launched her ahead of perpetual
divisional champ Betty Blank. Her 39:38 finish at Pike's Peek
10K was good enough for an age group victory and 16th place
overall. It also made her the only woman in this age bracket to
run a 10K equivalent time under 40:00. Wack also did well at the
St. Patrick's Day 10K, posting a top ten overall finish in 40:12.
Of course, Blank was not too far behind, running eight races
this spring and easily securing the second slot in these
rankings. Blank was sharp when it counted, having her fastest
race at the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler, where she ran 1:08:12,
finishing 51st, just outside the top 50.
Dorothy Winn of Norfolk was very consistent this spring, running
a 42:17 at the Elizabeth River Run 10K, and a 33:15 at the
Shamrock Masters 8K. As a result of these performances, we have
awarded Winn the third place ranking. Ellie Murphy, another
runner who stuck to the smaller races this spring, grabs fourth
place on the strength of a 20:32 showing at the O'Doul's 5K and
a 21:04 at the Billy Korrow Memorial Run.
Sliding into the fifth slot this spring is Mary Astrop of
Richmond, who charged over the line at the Shamrock Marathon in
3:24:07, good enough for third among the over 40 crowd. Astrop
also was on hand at the Richmond Race for the Cure, where she
ran slightly faster, finishing in 20:52.

Women 50-54
Winchester's Sandra Adams is, once again, the undisputed
champion of the women's 50-54 division. It's difficult to choose
just one or two of Adams's performances to highlight, but here
are just a few of her brightest moments this spring. At the
Cherry Blossom 10 Miler, Adams ran 1:08:29 for an incredible
58th place overall finish. She was even faster at Pike's Peek,
where she ran 41:03, and at the St. Patrick's Day 10K she ran
42:09 for a top 20 finish.
Karen Erb of Alexandria isn't quite as fast as Sandra Adams, but
she was competitive enough to earn second place. She chased
after Adams at Pike's Peek, and finished in 42:41, her best race
of the spring. She also ran an impressive 1:11:59 at the
Defenders 10 Miler.
Jeanne Kruger-Williams, who hails from Norfolk, snatched the
third slot in the spring rankings with her 3:33:14 marathon at
the Shamrock Sportsfest--a 45:35 10K equivalent, and her best
race of the spring. Crofton's Maria Shields slips quietly into
the fourth slot, with a noteworthy performance at the Governor's
Bay Bridge 10K, where she ran 45:38. Finally, laying claim to
the final spot in the top five is Adelphi's Deb Gebhardt.
Gebhardt had only three qualifying races this spring, with her
fastest being a 45:49 10K equivalent at the Footsteps of Reston
10 Miler.

Women 55-59
Once again, Sharon Dolan is queen of the 55-59 division. The
Gaithersburg resident is simply faster than any other woman in
this area in her division. At the Cherry Blossom Ten Miler,
Dolan ran 1:09:43--nearly two minutes faster than last year. She
also ran 41:52 at the Pike's Peek 10K for her fastest race of
the season.
Fairfax's Hideko Pirie was the division runner up, a place she
earned with four strong performances, including a 21:27 at the
Brain Tumor 5K. Pirie was also on hand at the Sallie Mae 10K,
where she bested her age group competition by running 45:27
Crofton's Betty King has earned herself the third place ranking
this spring, on the strength of her second in division finish at
the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler, where she ran 1:17:49. Her other
race was a 45:29 at the Pike's Peek 10K. Right behind King at
the Cherry Blossom race, coming in in 1:19:58, was
Gaithersburg's Dee Nelson, who has been awarded the fourth
ranking.
Finally, Andrea Hess earns fifth for her 48:35 divisional
triumph at the Ukrop's race. Hess ran her second qualifying time
(1:26:26) at the very hilly Charlottesville 10 Miler.

Women 60-64
Eleven women in the 60-64 division earned the required two
qualifying times to qualify for the rankings this spring. And,
there is a new leader this time. Charlottesville's Lis Villadsen
has collected the top slot in these rankings merely by being
faster than the competition. At the very hilly Charlottesville
10 Miler, she became the only woman ranked in this division to
earn a 10K equivalent time under 50:00, running the race in
1:22:02, good enough for a 49:18 10K equivalent. Villadsen's
other race was a 39:52 at the Martha Jefferson 8K.
Alexandria's Godhild Habib takes the runner-up slot, a feat she
achieved when she won the division over always-strong Tami Graf
at the Run vs. Row 10K and the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler, and also
beat Barbara Szoradi of Washington, who takes the third slot on
the strength of her 1:29:52 finish at the Cherry Blossom race.
Habib ran 55:04 there for her best race of the season. However,
she also ran 1:25:30 to beat out age group competition from
Brenda Murray at the George Washington Parkway Classic. Szoradi
also beat both Habib and Graf at the St. Patrick's Day 10K.
Graf, it should be noted, had an exceptionally bad race at Run
vs. Row; however, her other three performances were good enough
to secure the fourth slot in the rankings.
Baltimore's Jill Mottus grabs the fifth slot, with a number of
very consistent performances, running solidly all spring. Mottus
ran 42:46 at the Pikesville 8K for her best race this spring.
She was also prolific, posting five other qualifying times.

Women 65-69
There was almost no head-to-head competition in the women's 65-
69 division this spring, so rankings were based almost
exclusively on 10K equivalent times. Keeping that in mind,
Joanne Mallett of Rockville was the clear division winner,
turning in an incredible 26:46 at Garrett's 5K.
Phyllis Altrogge of McLean earns the second slot, with her 28:10
at the Metro Run and Walk 5K. Betty Dameron of Fredericksburg is
our third ranked runner, coming off a strong performance at the
Microsoft-USO Defenders 10 Miler, where she completed the course
in 1:38:37.
Yvonne Aasen of Severna Park was the only other woman to earn a
10K equivalent time under an hour, and, as such, earns the
fourth slot in this group. Aasen's best race was a 59:51 at the
Governor's Bay Bridge 10K. Finally, rounding out the top five is
southern Virginia runner Barbara Guerrieri, who had her best
race at the Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10K, running to the line in
1:01:37.

Women 70-74
Arlington's Doralie Segal once again has the crown for the 70-74
division. Segal had three qualifying times, with her best race a
58:14 at the Pike's Peek 10K, where she beat out age group
competition from our second ranked runner, Lee Glassco, and our
third ranked runner, Kerstin Anderson. Segal also topped age
group competition at the St. Patrick's Day 10K, where she ran
1:04:05, and was second at the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler in
1:05:10 (10K equivalent).
McLean's Glassco and Rockville's Anderson went head to head
twice, at the aforementioned races, with Glassco winning both
times, so it is clear that she should earn the second slot,
while Anderson takes third.
Grasonville's Martha Trimmer earns the fourth slot with five
qualifying times, the fastest of which was a 38:35 at the
O'Doul's 5K.
Finally, Reston's Terry Hamilton grabs the fifth slot in the
division, the result of her age group victories over Annandale's
Marge Stahl at the Footsteps of Reston 10 Miler, where she ran
2:15:09. To her credit, Stahl beat Hamilton at the Metro Run and
Walk 5K; however, Hamilton's margin of victory was larger;
therefore, we awarded her the fifth slot.

Women 75 & Over
Two women over age 75 earned the required two qualifying times
this spring to gain a place in these rankings, and they actually
ran head to head in an exciting race. Our top ranked runner in
this group is Rockville's Kay Morrison, who earned the top slot
when she edged Alexandria's Hedy Marque at the George Washington
Parkway Classic 15K, finishing 20 seconds ahead in 1:50:13.
Morrison also ran 1:03:31 at Pike's Peek. Marque, still going
strong at age 83, was just behind Morrison at the GW Parkway
race, and also earned qualifying times at the Cherry Blossom 10
Miler in 1:54:51 and a 1:05:04 at the Sallie Mae 10K.
