started the period with a win at the Elizabeth River 10K in
38:04, ending it with an excellent age gfroup win at the
Rock 'n'Roll HM in 1:21:09.
Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K, 27:06, 10K = 34:24
Tatiana Chulakh of Gaithersburg, MD is back. At the Race for the
Cure 5K the first week of June, she denied Mary Kate Bailey of
Arlington, VA, winning 16:55 (10K = 35:13) to 17:04 (10K =
35:32). Two weeks later, fourth place Keira Carlstrom of
Washington, DC had a super race at the GBMC Father's Day 5K in
16:53. Too bad for her, Chulakh was there, winning in 16:40 (10K
= 34:42). The next week they had a rematch at the Baltimore
Women's Classic 5K. Chulakh improved the gap 16:44 to 17:22.
Elena Orlova of Gaithersburg, MD started the period Memorial Day
weekend with a solid MCVet victory in 36:07. The following week,
she blasted a 34:41 at the Run Through History 10K, looking good
to move up to the crown. Then came the crown maker Twilight 8K.
Chulakh powered to a 27:06 finish (10K = 34:24). Even if it were
a daytime race, Orlova would have faded out of sight, finishing
in 28:38 (10K = 36:21). Carlstrom was third in 29:45 (10K =
37:46).
In August, Bailey took on the Leesburg 20K course, mastering it
in 1:13:50 (10K = 35:15). Aurora Scott (16) of Chesapeake, VA
stepped up and finished as the top American at the Rock 'n' Roll
HM in 1:18:17 (10K = 35:22) for the fifth spot in the rankings.
Meghan Ridgley of Reston, VA rolled in behind Susannah
Kvasnicka, who has been scarce lately, at Leesburg to take the
sixth spot in 36:22. Cauller with a slightly stronger resume,
including two overall wins, gets seventh, then Renee High of
Virginia Beach, VA who had followed Scott at the half marathon
in 1:21:09 (10K = 36:40). Alisa Harvey (40) of Manassas, VA is
in ninth with four overall wins.

Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon, 1:18:17, 10K = 35:22
This summer the teens went crazy with 67 women qualifying for
the division. All summer long these young women are running
superb times, often qualifying for the Open division. In late
July, Alison Smith of Columbia, MD met Halsey Sinclair at the
Orioles Advocates 5K, winning in 18:01 (10K = 37:31). Halsey,
who ran 18:34 (10K = 38:39) had just suffered a rare loss to
twin sister Ashlyn at the Twilight 8K. Both had run, for them,
sub par times. Smith had beaten both of them at the AS WDF 5K
earlier in the month, running 18:24 (10K = 38:19). Playing
leapfrog, Halsey beat Ashlyn 19:04 to 19:11.
In August, Catherine White of Salem, VA runs a hometown 5K in
18:24 (10K = 38:19) to match up to Smith's second race. A week
later she races the FAB 5K in 17:58 (10K = 37:29) to squeak past
Smith for the runner-up spot. At the Kentlands 5K in September,
Halsey cements the third spot over Ashlyn 18:13 to 18:47. Cara
Harrison of Gaithersburg, MD earns sixth, finishing in 18:50.
After tantalizing the division all summer, Aurora Scott of
Chesapeake, VA reappears and makes it easy to declare her the
champion. The last week of August, she pops an overall win at
the East Coast Surfing Championship 5K in 17:08 (10K = 35:40).
The final weekend, at the Rock 'n' Roll HM, she finishes as the
14th woman, first American, only the second non-open division
runner, and the first teen by nearly 20 minutes. Her time was
1:18:17 (10K = 35:22).
August 13th Brittney Rooks (12) of Baltimore, MD earns 13th
place as the overall winner of the Too Hot to Trot 5M in 32:14
(10K = 40:39). Two weeks later in Williamsburg, 10-year-old
Dakota McManus becomes the youngest overall winner at the
Estuary 5K in 22:08.

Run Through History 10K, 34:41
Elena Orlova of Gaithersburg, MD started the period winning the
MCVet 10K in a landslide 36:07 over 11th ranked Denise Knickman,
third overall in 41:04. Then she decided the championship the
second weekend of the period, with a powerful win at the Run
through History 10K in 34:41 against third ranked Susan Graham-
Gray of Greencastle, PA. Graham-Gray ran a very credible 37:18,
which matched well with runner-up Feng Sun's overall win at
Damien's Run 5K in 18:01 (10K = 37:31). Graham-Gray's second
race was a near dead heat second place at the Gary Brown 5 Mile
in 31:39 (10K = 39:55), losing to 16-year-old Neely Spence in an
identical time. (This is the daughter of racing legend Steve
Spence who set aside former champion Mark Stickley there by 39
seconds, running the fastest masters race of the period.) The
following day, Sun, of Columbia, MD, hosed a tough field to win
the prestigious Annapolis 10 Miler in 62:17 (10K = 37:26) and
edge Graham-Gray for the second spot.
Meanwhile, Orlova rode to an overall, hand-ridden, one-minute
victory at the Cure Autism Now 5K in 17:41 (10K = 36:49).
Seventh place Christy Underdonk of Potomac, MD had her best race
to finish third there in 18:50 (10K = 39:13). The fifth spot
goes to Cathy Pugsley of Potomac Falls, VA who strode in third
in her division to Orlova's 28:38 (10K = 36:49) at the Twilight
8K. Pugsley ran 30:23 (10K = 38:34) in a dead heat loss to
Hilary Cairns of Washington, DC. Pugsley improved her pace,
rallying to a second overall at the Leesburg 20K in 1:20:10 (10K
= 38:16). Cairns matched her move with a third overall Kentlands
5K in September at 18:22 (10K = 38:14). Marjan Huizing of
Bethesda, MD filled in the sixth spot, racing the Capital
Crescent 5K in 18:34 (10K = 38:39).

wins but her fastest race was bronze at the Bel Air Town Run 5K
in 19:32 against a tough field.
Lawyers Have Heart 10K, 36:49
Alisa Harvey did not just cement her hold on the division crown,
she built a monument. She started with the largest 5K in the
area, finishing fourth overall at the Race for the Cure in 18:02
(10K = 37:33). In four of her other races, she was the overall
winner. The following weekend she won the Lawyers Have Heart 10K
in 36:49. Her slowest race of the period was her win the next
day at the Capital One Celebrate Children & Youth 5K in 18:23 at
the identical pace per mile. Her only flaw was a tough race at
the Derby Day 5K in July at 19:49. She finished tenth woman and
second masters to Michelle Simonaitis of Draper, UT. Simonaitis
ran 2:40:35 at the Austin Marathon in 2001.
The next seven women are all capable of a sub 40:00 10K and
anyone could produce the goods for runner-up, though none is
really a pretender to the crown.
Linda Sawvell of Newport News, VA is the logical choice with
three of the next best nine times. In June, at the CHKD 10K she
ran 39:05 for the second fastest 10K of the division. In
September, she aced the Rock 'n' Roll HM in 1:26:03 (10K =
38:53) going three for three with age group wins.
Third place Rebecca Nathan of Arlington, VA was not so lucky.
She finished second to Harvey at the Cure in 19:30 (10K =
40:36). In all but one of the rest of her races, she either won
or finished in the top three overall. In the evening after
Harvey ran the Derby Day, Nathan was taking top masters honors
at the Twilight 8K in 31:59 in an identical 40:36 10K
equivalent. Fourth ranked Laura Nelson of Woodstock, VA was
third at the Twilight 8K in 32:37 (10K = 41:24) close behind the
heels of fifth ranked Monica Grillo of Arlington, VA (32:29, 10K
= 41:14). Nelson returned the favor at the Leesburg 20K in
August, winning in 1:22:23 (10K = 39:19) to 1:22:35 (10K =
39:25). Nathan waited until August 31 to pull out the stops for
her best race by far at the Run for Karen 5K in 18:38 (10K =
38:48).

Orioles Advocates 5K, 18:23, 10K = 38:16
When Lee DiPietro races, she wins. Warm weather is her best
time. She started the first weekend with the MCVets 5K in 18:31
(10K = 38:33). Rather than win the 10K there also (people often
double dip and run both the 5K and the 10K), she saved her
energy to win the Race for our Kids 10K in 38:29 the next week.
In late July, she capped the top three races of the division
with her win at the Orioles Advocates 5K in 18:23 (10K = 38:16).
After a two-minute drop, the battle for runner-up is fiercely
contested by the next four runners. Valerie Plyler of Yorktown,
VA had seven age group wins including the top 5K of the group at
the Vineyards 5K in Williamsburg at 19:28 (10K = (40:32) and two
overall wins to earn the third spot. Cindy Conant is coming on
like gangbusters after entering the division. In her first race
of the period she knocked off fourth place Win Persina of
Washington, DC at the Capital Crescent 5K in 19:32 (10K = 40:40)
to 19:47 (10K = 41:11). They met again at the Twilight 8K and
Conant prevailed again, 33:16 to 34:16.
Conant earns the check mark for division runner-up, sweeping
into the winner's circle at the Annapolis 10 Mile in 1:08:50
(10K = 41:22). Plyler's second best race was the Warhill 5K in
19:55 (10K = 41:28). Persina made another move Labor Day weekend
at the Kentlands 5K in 19:51 (10K = 41:20). Fifth place Lynda
Layson made her move in mid August at the FOP Lodge 5K in 19:45
(10K = 41:07). She had seven other age group wins, though none
nearly so fast.

Too Hot to Trot 5M, 32:58,10K = 41:34
Betty Blank of Falls Church, VA and Alison Suckling of Arnold,
MD are always battling for the top spot-shades of Bill Rodgers
and Frank Shorter. Last fall in their first heads up match,
Suckling caught Blank at the Veterans Day 10K and held on to win
42:06 to 42:20. All spring they tossed out victories, with Blank
setting the standard six times from 3K to 25K. Then in June,
they met for a rematch at the Lawyers Have Heart. Both these
women have heart! There were no other runners in the race for
them. Up and back Canal Road they battled, with Suckling's three
years younger legs winning by the narrowest of edges--one second-
-in 42:24.
Blank backed off from some of the leg injuries all runners get.
She was too competitive not to show up for the Twilight 8K. It
was obvious that she was not ready yet. Still, she managed a
second place finish in 36:49 (10K = 46:44). Before turning 50,
Debbie Flynn of Gaithersburg, MD had bested Blank at Cherry
Blossom in the spring. Her 34:33 (10K = 43:52) at Twilight
matched up nicely with Blank's former Best of 2006 33:50 at St.
Patrick's Day 8K on a cooler, faster course. That was all made
moot when Suckling uncorked a 32:58 (10K = 41:44) at the Too Hot
to Trot 5 Mile in mid-August. Blank rebounded strongly at the
Run for Karen 5K late August in 20:35 (10K = 42:51). Flynn
responded with the Kentlands 5K win (20:44, 10K = 43:10),
putting Blank on notice that she has competition coming from
both sides now.
From Southwest Virginia, Nancy Ferris cranked out three wins,
including a 1:39:28 half marathon for fourth place. Cater-
cornering the region, Margaret Starnes of Northeast Maryland
finished second to Suckling at the Bel Air Town Run 20:45 to
21:45 for fifth place.

Kentlands/Lakelands 5K, 21:02, 10K = 43:47
Betty Ankrapp (57) of Gaithersburg, MD appeared out of nowhere
Labor Day weekend for her only race to erase the former Best of
2006 5K time with 21:02. Fourth place Nancy Crippen ran two fast
5Ks, including the SPCA Run in 22:27 (10K = 46:44) to hold off
fifth place Naomi Stanford of Washington, DC and to press third
place Rose Malloy of Annapolis, MD. Stanford ran two DCRRC four
milers, including Bastille Day in 29:28 (10K = 47:11).
Malloy won the Chestertown 10 Mile in 1:17:18 (10K = 46:27) in
late May. She continued her winning ways in Annapolis. The
former overall winner as well as masters record holder, even
starting late, won handily in 1:17:52 (10K = 46:48) over Maria
Shields, 1:21:38. Seventh place Shields won all but two of her
races with Malloy to thank for those other two races.
Alice Franks loves to race and she usually wins. In fact, her
first eight races of the period were wins, including a Lawyers
Have Heart 10K in 46:10. In August, her eighth race was the
Leesburg 10K where she set the record in 2004 and has won her
age group four straight years. This year her time of 46:05 was
her best race of the year.
Good thing for her that Sandra Adams was running in the 20K.
Adams had taken some time off after her Tim Harmon 5K win in
June with 21:10 (10K = 21:10). In August, she was back to defend
her crown in the 20K. She had placed second in the inaugural
year to Betty Blank. Then, turning 55 last year, she took on the
heat for a great win. In 2006, even with much cooler weather,
she started slow but took full advantage of the last few
downhill miles to break her own course record with 1:33:06 (10K=
44:26).

New Balance Jenny Smith Baltimore Women's Classic 5K, 22:42, 10K
= 47:16
In this division, time is the most important consideration. If
you throw out the eight qualifying times at the Annapolis 10
Mile, only 16 of the 85 times were NOT an age group win.
Most of the top times for this division occurred at the
beginning of the period. Well, except for 4th place Dee Nelson
of Gaithersburg, MD, who ran 19 ranked races while winning 16 of
them. She started the period with a Capital Crescent 5K win in
24:34 (10K = 51:09) and ended the period at the Bay Cafe 5K just
a week before birthday celebration number 63, slowing
imperceptibly to 24:36. Nelson averages just more than 3.4 miles
per race in her 46 races for the year so far.
Third place Helene Price of Williamsburg, VA prefers longer
events. She ignored all the moaning about hot weather from the
2005 Leesburg 20K and arrived to blast the course's second
fastest time, winning in 1:46:32 (10K = 50:51).
Runner-up B.J. King of Crofton, MD ran all her four victories in
less than thirty days between June 10 and July 8. Her best race
was her first, a 50:23 win at the Crofton 10K. Just as she was
finishing her races, this period's champion, Chris Craun of
Bethesda, MD, was returning to retain her crown. She picked the
competitive races, winning the Twilight 8K in 39:25 (10K =
50:02). Her other two victories pitted her against 11th place
Katherine Sandler (64) also of Bethesda, MD. Sandler, the oldest
ranked runner in the division, will be glad to move on. Craun
bested her at the Cure Autism Now 5K in 23:57 (10K = 49:52) to
26:16. At Annapolis, Sandler's 1:31:27 put her ahead of six
other runners but well behind Craun's 1:24:16 (10K = 50:38).

MCRRC Run for the Roses 5K, 26:21, 10K = 54:52
As Tami Graf moves on to the next division midway through the
period, a determined Betty Smith of Rockville, MD continues her
hold on the top spot.
Her Run for the Roses 5K in 26:21 was the fastest 5K this year.
(Yolanda Lane topped that at Zack's Run by a full minute
September 17.) Smith had the top ten-mile race, winning
Annapolis in 1:37:11 (10K = 58:24) by more than a mile ahead of
Brenda Murray. She was also ahead of both of Graf's ten mile
times, running 1:43:39 at Chestertown in late May while she was
in this division and 1:39:39 at Annapolis after she had moved
on. Graf still owns six of the Best of 2006 times.
Arlowene Garland of Warsaw, VA always pressed Graf. Now she is
pressing Smith. She ran the Hartwood 10 Mile the same day as
Annapolis in 1:45:22. Still, in May she ran the Civitan 10K in
58:30 and the SPCA 5K in 27:59 (10K = 58:16); these are two
fastest times in the top five not held by Smith. Nancy Fraser of
Charlottesville took August off, resting in the sixth spot with
her early races. The last weekend she ran the vaunted
Charlottesville Women's 4 Mile in 37:18 (10K = 59:43) to vault
over three runners into the third spot.

Photo by Brightroom.com: Tami Graf of Lusby, MD turned seventy
in July and already has ten of the Best of 2006 race distances.Harris Teeter Leesburg 10K, 59:11
Tami Graf of Lusby, MD entered the division at the beginning of
July. She then surgically cut through the division, setting ten
Best of 2006 distance times between 400 meters and the half
marathon. Eight of her nine races bested every other woman's
best race. The ninth race was the end-of-the-weekend Larry Noel
15K. I advised her not to race too much the day before the
event. She promptly ignored me and raced the 800M and 5K the day
before and the 1 mile and 3K the same morning of the 15K race.
Her wins included the biggest 8K (Twilight), 10 Mile
(Annapolis), and the third largest 10K (Leesburg).
Betty Dameron of Fredericksburg, VA is next. Her best event was
a second place finish at Leesburg in 1:05:50. Third place Yvonne
Aasen of Severna Park, MD jumped ship to the new division at
Annapolis where she was well back of Graf. Aasen's best race,
the Crofton 10K in 1:09:22, propelled her in front of fourth
place Jacqueline O'Neil of Washington, DC, who ran Lawyers Have
Heart in 1:10:22.

course was most likely a bit short. Lee Glassco wins the title
with three DCRRC races. Her best was the Bastille 4 Miler in
55:15 (10K = 1:28:27). Trimmer ran four other Baltimore area
5Ks, the best being the Baltimore Women's Classic 5K in 47:25
