St. Patrick's Day 10K

McCormack Wins Another One

For the Washington Running Report

The fourth annual St. Patrick's Day 10K Run for the Children race went off without a hitch as 1,500 runners took to the streets of Washington on a cool but sunny March morning. This race acts as the fundraiser for a unique program which sponsors a physical fitness program for youngsters at elementary schools throughout the metropolitan DC area. It is from runners to future runners, a Run for the Children Day at each participating school.

The kids run in a series of 3 events: 50 meter dash, 100 meter, and 400 meter runs. The series emphasizes both physical fitness and a special yearly theme, such as drug education.

The TAC-certified course for the race starts at the Old Post Office Pavilion running east on Pennsylvania Avenue, coming back west on Constitution, south on 14th Street, east on Independence past the Capitol with a loop around the L'Enfant Plaza area on the way. From Capitol Hill, the course makes a loop around the Madison building of the library of Congress before heading back west on Independence, up to 14th Street, and onto the finish on 12th Street near the Old Post Office. While not a hilly course, it is far from flat, with most of the race running on either a moderate uphill or downhill grade.

The lead pack of nearly a dozen runners passed the first mile in under five minutes, but by two miles (passed in 10:12), a group of three runners had opened a twenty meter lead on the others as the swift pace began to take its toll. Dave McCormack and John Duffy ran together through just before three miles, when surging Jeff Pajak proved too much for Duffy, and he started to fall off the pace. The three miles went by in a quick 14:56, and 4 miles was past in 20:13. Pajak maintained the lead with Dave McCormack off his shoulder and Duffy now falling back toward a pack of half a dozen runners 200 meters behind. By 4 1/2, the second pack began breaking up. At 5 miles, it was a two man race, with the clock reading 25:14. Just after 5 miles, McCormack made his move, and opened a 5-meter gap, which quickly grew to 20 meters. McCormack crossed the line with the win in 31:20, with Pajak second in 31:34. John Duffy held on for third in 31:49, as a fast closing Greg Watson settled for fourth in 32:08.

The women's race was taken by Jackie Macdonald in a time of 39:01, followed by Carol Schulrz with 39:32.
