Washington Running Report

Revolutionary advances allow one to keep pace with demands in a changing world. Running gives us a forward strategy for freedom through engagement with our community (President Bush, USNA address). It is refreshing to break away from the hectic demands of work, travel the streets and paths, and avoid the complacency of staying in a familiar environment. A runner has minimal impact and learns not to shrink from an occasional loud motorist. Americans cherish liberty and runners thrive on it. Big Ben (Franklin) notes that the harsh and tyrannical treatment he encountered from his older brother might be the reason for his aversion to arbitrary power (Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin). An active lifestyle serves as insurance for a strong heart, body and mind.

Comfort is an important consideration when one dresses for a run. Florence Griffith Joyner sprinted 100 meters onto the cover of Sports Illustrated with style and grace. "Flo Jo" carefully designed her running apparel - her focus remained on easy movement through space. Joyner's uniform fit her personality and need for unhindered movement with no distractions to slow her down. All athletes can choose a style that suits an individual's personality and goals.

Three apparel items were tested for comfort and function from the SportHill clothing lineup. The Voyage Pant uses a fabric that blends polyester, rayon, acrylic and Lycra; the result is a cottony material and a superior ability to wick moisture. This running pant is comfortably loose, medium weight and warm. The inclusion of side pockets and ankle zippers make it very functional. A lightweight vest insulates the torso without the restriction on movement or heat buildup of a full jacket. The Orygun Vest has a breathable polyester fabric and resists water and wind. It includes pockets on the chest and back; the Orygun offers extra protection on days that are too cool for a shirt alone. The comfortable Ventex fabric in the Legacy Tee shirt manages moisture well; however, after a few washes, it begins to grow small fuzz-balls. The shirt is attractively cut and fashionable. Well-manufactured running clothing offers performance during sports workouts while also enhancing the wearer's image.

SportHill is available via phone: (888) 622-8444; over the internet at www.sporthill.com; and in local retail running shops.
