This popular spring race has a long, rich history of good competition and good fun.
The St. Patrick’s Day race has been a tradition in Washington, DC since 1988. The race began as a 10K with just over 1100 registrants. Scott Celley of Washington, DC won that first race in 32:19. Andrea Volpe of Springfield, VA, was the first female finisher in 36:32. You can read all about it below.
The race grew steadily in popularity over the years, and by 1998 had reached 3,761 registrants. Runners, who always wore their best green running attire, began to appear in costumes and funny hats. The 5,000 mark was approached in 2002 when the event topped out at 4,979, and finally exceeded in 2004 with 5,390 registrants.
The race serves as the official start of the spring racing season in Washington, DC and is a must-run event for competitive runners and age group competitors as they test their winter conditioning programs.
In 2006, due to constraints on the use of streets in downtown Washington, DC, the race became an 8K. Although some runners were unhappy about losing two kilometers of roadway, the new event appealed to many more and grew to 5,983 runners, the biggest year yet!
