Ashburn Village Heats Up For Spring

Michael Vega (#450) takes the lead from start to finish in the 10K.
Tramp, tramp, tramp the troops were marching. It was like the death March at Bataan. Summer slammed past spring and we were hit by oppressive ninety plus day for the second time this year. The weather man told us that it was a cooler than average year and this was the latest that we have gone into the year for an eighty degree day. Wrong. We still do not have an eighty degree day. We got ninety twice.
The race promised a new, fast course with no more than a 1% incline. Before the race a veteran of the 10K from last year noted it was a rolling course. "But they said it was fast and flat." He just kept shaking his head and saying, "The course rolls." That seemed strange too. After the fire truck blasted it siren at 8:00 AM the 10K began and for the first two miles it seemed to be going up and up. Finally turning off Ashburn Village Boulevard, we hoped for a reprieve but the neighborhood wound up as well. One runner croaked plaintively, "This they call flat?"
In truth, what goes up must come down, so there must have been some down hills hidden in the scorched air. The race warned everyone to drink up and there was a huge presence of rescue teams that gladly were not needed. There were many well manned water stops. A few more course marshals would have been nice at the myriad intersection where one had to wonder if they were still on the right course.
Last year's 10K winner Karen Young (48:43) bolted for Greece just before the race, though she was signed up for a return engagement. None of the 102 finishers raced fast enough for a Runner Rankings spot. This year second place Amanda Chahill (38) of Great Falls, VA broke fifty minutes at the wire with 49:56. The race winner Kerstin Dea (32) was already acclimatized to heat coming from Rockledge, FL. She took the first mile in 7:01 and held that pace like a metronome winning all alone in a solid 43:32. Note that even in the heat back in Rockville; Dea would have placed 35th at the Pike's Peek 10K. Jeannie Trautman (46) of Leesburg, VA was third a step or two back of Cahill with 50:07.
Michael Vega conquered the 5K handily last year in 18:08. So this year he decided to double his pleasure and take on the 10K. Last year James Dunn (47) had won in 40:18. Vega was very confident and bolted into the lead. He might have been a little concerned if he knew he were racing against a trimmed down Doug Sabel. Sabel with more than 20 years in racing had run the precursor of Pike's Peek, the Fritzbe 10K back in 1988 in 36:35 at age 16. In college he dropped down below thirty minutes in the 10K. Now at thirty-eight he runs more for the fun of it but a race brings out the competitive juices and he kept it close most of the way. Vega earned another crown in 36:59. That would have been 49th place at Pike's Peek. Sabel, now living in Vienna, slid in second with 37:45. Gregory Stemberger (31) of Aldie, VA was third in 38:48. Dunn, who had won easily last year, put up a valiant effort on the much hotter day and nearly matched last year's time with 40:31 for fourth overall and squeezing out fifth place Bryan Tenney (41) of Ashburn in his bid for the master title.
The 5K started ten minutes after the 10K at 8:10 AM. The 10K is a newer event and still is half the size of the 5K. Or maybe folks knew it was awful hot to try on a 10K. It was so hot as we passed the lakes along the boulevard I was hoping someone would tell me to "jump into a lake." After the race, the computer saw me coming and said, "cuckoo, cuckoo." It went a little crazy too and confused some of the places on the award's page. The overall list had it right and the awards have now been fixed.
A few runners came over a said, "They called out my name at the finish; why am I not in the results?" They were but we had to perform a little magic to get them to appear. Race day lists are always unofficial. The results are now corrected and posted.
Also, the race bib does show us who you are here for the announcer but it is the ChronoTrack D-tag in your shoe that tells us your time.
In photo, Wesley Malychev (18) really felt the heat a slide back from second last year in 18:37 to fourth this year in 20:17. He had Rob Meadows (37) of Leesburg, VA on his heels. Meadows ran 20:22 to top the 30-39 division. Eugene Su (28) of Ashburn, VA returned to defend his 20-29 title for fifth overall in 21:20. Heat was a factor here too as he had run 20:03 last year. For the top three, it was a tough battle the whole way. Robert Jones (38) of Ashburn, VA started with a tiny lead and held it the whole way, winning in 18:57. Second and third was a photo opportunity as 17-year-old Zach Deaton edged 39-ywear-old Todd Jarman of Potomac Falls, VA, both with an identical 19:03.
For the women, they had a big challenge to compete with Joan Hunter's winning time of 20:10 last year. Hunter (44), a national class masters sprinter, hosed the field by four minutes. This year Amy Lane (24) of Herndon, VA emulated that race pulling away early for a smashing victory in 21:31. Elisabeth Rebholz (13) of Ashburn, VA was next in 23:40. Below she is seen here with her brother Mitchell. Mitchell (9) won the 12 and under division with 25:11. When we took this photo we asked, "Where was their mom?" for the photo. Elisabeth replied, "Why? She didn't win anything." Seventh place Sarah Buckheit (48) of Reston, VA was the masters winner in 25:24.
Perhaps the wisest participants walked through the scenic neighborhoods for the 1 mile fun run/walk. In the photo, it was mostly kids.
This year's proceeds will be donated in full to the Ashburn Volunteer Fire Department.
