Open Men
Tim Kennard 5-Mile River Run, 23:57. 10K = 30:12
Twenty men qualified for the Elite division. Seven joined in from other divisions. Sixty-four men ran at least one qualifying time.
Matt Seymour of Rockville, MD wins the division by defeating second ranked Erik Kean of Arlington, VA, fourth ranked Eric Kweder of Woodbridge, VA (31:20), and fifth ranked Aaron Church of South Riding, VA (31:41) at the GW Birthday 10K. Seymour's winning time was 30:49. He also finished third overall at the Tim Kennard 5 Mile in 24:27.
Erik Kean was the top local runner at the Ashburn Farms 10K in 31:27 in the fall before racing GW in 30:57. Chris Banks of Alexandria, VA was the top local at his hometown Turkey Trot 5 Mile in 24:35 and broke the Red Ribbon 5K tape in 15:09. Kweder was just of the pace in 15:12.

19 & Younger Men
Red Ribbon 5K, 15:44. 10K = 32:49
Ninety-four young runners ran one qualifying time. This period, only six ran two qualifying times. Sixteen-year-old Charlie Celesia of Virginia Beach, VA is the first champion. He tuned up with a 10K overall win at the Tidewater Striders Tune-up race with 34:54. The week before he had met fifth place David Jeffers of Virginia Beach, VA in passing at the Mud in Your Eye 6K. Jes Baron of Annandale, VA earns second by a second (in 10K equivalent), running the Blacksburg 10 Mile in 58:50.
Third Place Rory Jenkins of Phoenix, MD had run the RRCA Challenge in 59:50 the week before. The week of Baron's race he improved to a fine 28:05 at the Tim Kennard 5 Mile. Brian Derr of Newport News, VA was a whisper behind, winning his division at the Colonial 3 Mile in 16:25.

The top five runners also qualified for the open division. Half of the twelve runners are thirty-nine and eager to soon capture a masters spot as well. Michael Mann of Hampton, VA had the three top times. His three overall wins were in not often used distances, the 20K, 25K, and 30K. His 15:51 5K at Governor's Landing easily set the standard for that distance. His finest effort was the 20K win at Fort Story in 68:32.
John Piggott of Williamsburg, VA trumped an excellent field at the Colonial HM with 72:56. Mike Woodman of Timonium (73:45) and Alexander Hetherington of Stafford, VA (74:11) were shuffled back to fourth and fifth. But paladin Piggott was not done. The weekend after his half, he traveled north to gun down the entire field, winning a whole marathon at Piney Point in 2:37:22.
Mike Colaiacovo of Chesapeake, VA earned third at the RRCA Challenge 10 Mile in 55:19. His second race was the Outback 8K in 26:33. That race also featured top competition with twenty percent of the runners urged on to ranked times.

Outback Steakhouse 8K, 26:00. 10K = 32:59
Mark Stickley of Winchester, VA is healthy and on the rampage. After being near invisible last year in the rankings, he dusted off the competition. Three of his four races qualified him in the Open division. His fourth race placed him in the heady company between three Open ranked runners and ahead of the previous age group record at the Rotary Resolution 10K in 34:47. Tim Schuler's only race this period bumped him off that platform and rewrote Chuck Moeser's masters record of 34:44 with a 34:37.
"Stickman's" Outback triumph in 26:00 was at the expense of third ranked Mark Hoon (photo above) of Kensington, MD (26:41) and fourth ranked Dave Berardi of Baltimore, MD (27:11). Nobody owns anybody in this competitive division. Still, Hoon's GW Birthday 10K in 33:04 helped cement his number one ranking. Hoon, known primarily as a long distance specialist with a Marathon in the Parks overall victory to his credit, ran two hilly 10 milers in near identical times: RRCA Challenge, 55:53, and Turkey Burnoff in 55:57. Don't try to tell me that the Challenge was short this year.
Rob Hinkle of Newport News, VA hit the runner-up spot with his swift 15:55 at the Governor's Landing. With so many fast times on that course, perhaps it is time to travel south and give it a try. Hinkle, in contrast to Hoon, is best when he races the 5K. Tell that to his foes at the Colonial HM where he won honors with his 76:17. That time nearly earned him an Open division spot with Hoon and Stickley. Rounding out the top five is Jon Schoenberg of Crofton, MD. He did his damage by the Bay, winning the AS Anniversary 15K in 53:29. Then, seven days after Hinkle's HM, he ran the B&A Trail HM seven seconds slower in 76:25.

Anheuser Busch Colonial Half Marathon, 75:22. 10K = 34:12
Sometimes runners win big in small races. Not so for Mark Malander of Oak Hill, VA, who finished second overall a few meters back in the Reston Fall into Winter 10K with 34:56. His Red Ribbon 5K in 16:50 was the second fastest 5K in the division. His biggest race was the Colonial HM masters crown, outdueling division champs Rob Hinkle from the 40-44 and Chuck Moeser from the 50-54 with a fine 75:22. If they could get that course certified, he could go after Roger Clark's 45-49 state record of 73:22 next year.
Jim Bates of Hampton, VA must be truly proud of his six division wins this period, including his 16:46 at Governor's Landing. His second place to Malander at Colonial settles him into the runner-up spot. George Buckheit of Reston,VA is hovering right next to Bates. He ran the GW Birthday 10K in 34:57 and the much hillier Rudolph 10K in 36:24.
Peter Searson of Baltimore, MD performed brilliantly on a couple of tough courses to gain fourth place. At the RRCA Challenge, he ran 58:32 and won his division at the Celtic Solstice 5M. Jim Wadsworth of Washington, DC crowds out a horde of seven 49-year-olds for fifth place. His Christmas Caper 5K in 17:30 did the trick.

Outback Steakhouse 8K, 26:58. 10K = 34:12
Sixty-two runners ran ranked times for the division. Sixty-one of them are eagerly whispering, "Is it true Chuck Moeser is retiring from racing?" That may be the only way to get a new division champion. Moeser had the fastest 5K, 8K, 10K, and HM in the division. We cannot even count his Steamtown Marathon from last October in 2:37:51.
People, these other runners are very good but they get blinded by the light of the Moeser star. David Webster of Stevensville, MD trailed Moeser at the Outback 8K in 28:47. Then he started the year at the Rotary Resolution, racing 38:16 to Chuck's 35:52 on a tough cross-country course. Paul Peterson of Bethesda, MD quietly turned fifty and followed these two home at the Outback 8K in 29:48. Paul starts out slow and gains momentum, as the race gets longer. In February, he earned the third spot at the RRCA Challenge, running 61:49. Four of the next five runners are fifty-four. Rick Platt of Williamsburg, VA earns fourth at the swift Governor's Landing 5K in 17:49.
The next three spots are very close, with Richard Adams, Jr. of Herndon, VA earning the point with a 37:16 GW Birthday 10K. Bill Alto of Newport News, VA stands out for his seven out of nine age group victories. Platt closed him out in the other two. His Governor's Landing 17:59 matched Admiral Paul Ryan's Christmas Caper 5K. Ryan also had a pack of age group wins.

Cox Communcns Star City Half Marathon, 84:08. 10K = 38:10
Is there a doctor in the house? Patrick Griffith has moved on to the next division. The Norfolk HM was declared short but not the Star City HM. Doc Weiss of Pembroke, VA lit up the course with a fabulous 84:08. Faster than either of Griffith's halves, it would have been a razor close finish.
Meanwhile, Larry Coley of Chesapeake, VA is piling up wins, including two swift 5Ks in 18:51. His Governor's Landing win led Dale Abrahamson (19:17) of Yorktown, VA back to fourth place. Jim Wright of Gaithersburg, MD had the fourth fastest time, cruising the hills of Columbia at the RRCA Challenge in 65:41. That was better than Weiss's Blacksburg 10 mile of 66:44 and earned him third place. Forty-nine runners have a ranked time. Of the twenty-five that had two races, nearly all had age group wins as well.

RRC Frostbite 15K, 58:43. 10K = 38:03
Patrick Griffith of Alexandria, VA is one of four locks in the men's division. Winning the St. Patrick's Day 10K meant that he has won his division in nine different race distances. That includes a 4-mile/30 minute victory over his division rival at the Disney Marathon. Training through the marathon and turning in fifty races a year, he still had the top five times. One competitor noted that he had the fastest time for the year at one distance, "until Pat Griffith runs the distance." Of his eleven, count them, eleven division wins, his best was the Frostbite 15K in 58:43 and the Gar Williams HM in 85:05.
Jason Page of Hamilton, VA was nearly a minute back at the Red Ribbon 5K in 19:27 to Grtiffith's 18:34. Page earned his second spot with two sub-forty 10Ks, including Ashburn Farms in 39:36. John Kirkpatrick of Annapolis, MD is synonymous with winning in Annapolis. His swift Anniversary 15K in 61:34 is equal to a sub forty 10K.
These three ate up the top eighteen spots. Still, fourth place Jim Noone of Fairfax, VA found time to dine on six age group awards, including the Christmas Caper in 41:45. Thirty-three out of eighty-three men ran a second qualifier to make this the second fattest division.

Speaking of sure things, John Elliott of Columbia, MD had five races and fives wins. His slowest race by a lot was the hilly Rotary Resolution 10K in 44:17, a full three minutes ahead of second place. His 42:06 Outback 8K puts him a stride or two behind Jim Noone in the earlier division. His Challenge 10 Mile puts him in fourth place in that division.
Ken Quincy of Vienna, VA comes up big at the Alexandria Turkey Trot 5M in 37:30. Maynard Weyers of Alexandria, VA boasts a 47:24 at the GW Birthday 10K. Stan Neumann of Timonium, MD posts the oldest runner with a sub-four-hour marathon, running 3:43:50 at the Northern Central Trail.

TS Tune-up Series 10K, 47:20
Tom Ray of Kitty Hawk, NC has been a fixture in southern Virginia for many years. His 47:20 at the Tidewater Striders Tune-up 10K propels him to the top. Jerry Lewis is back. He was a top runner in the 65-59 division and then disappeared for a while. Since turning seventy, he returned to win the division for 2004. These two have not raced against each other. Ray has five of the top nine times. Lewis has three. His Outback 8K in 37:56 earns him second. Jack McMahon of Rockville, MD was behind Lewis at the GW Birthday 10K but won the Alexandria Turkey Trot in 39:35 for third place.
