Open Men
After only five runners qualified in the Open division in the Winter, 26 qualified in the Spring.

By far the most competitive race of the Spring was Washington's Sallie Mae 10K, where top-ranked Wilson Komen (30:24) of Washington, DC and Kenya defeated second-ranked Eric Kweder (31:02) of Woodbridge, Virginia, fourth-ranked John Supsic (31:06) of Baltimore, fifth-ranked Chris Raabe (31:17) of N. Bethesda, Maryland, sixth-ranked Eric Kean (32:02) of Arlington, Virginia, and seventh-ranked Gennady Temnikov (31:20) of Rockville, Maryland and Russia. Komen's times included a 49:42 at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile.

Third-ranked is Michael Wardian of Arlington, Virginia, whose best performance was a 2:24:32 at the Shamrock Marathon in Virginia Beach. Winter winner Glen Mays of Washington, DC, was tenth in the Spring rankings. The youngest male qualifier is 22- year-old Matt Sinclair of Glen Allen, Virginia, and the oldest is the 42-year-old Temnikov.

Men 35 - 39
Four of the 14 qualifiers in this division were also good enough to qualify in the Open division.

The best battle was the Running Crab Half-Marathon in Hampton, Virginia, where rankings winner Michael Mann (1:10:25) of Hampton, Virginia, defeated the Winter rankings leader, second- ranked John Piggott (1:12:31) of Williamsburg, Virginia, and fifth-ranked Tom Purcell (1:14:33) of Norfolk, Virginia.

Third ranking goes to Joel Frushone of Washington, DC, whose best performance was a 32:48 at Washington's St. Patrick's Day 10K. Fourth is 2003 year-end champion Mark Gilmore of Columbia, Maryland, who ran a 15:51 at Alexandria's George Washington Parkway 5K.

Men 40 - 44
Fifteen runners qualified, led by Gennady Temnikov of Rockville, Maryland and Russia. Temnikov and second-ranked Chris Chattin of Columbia, Maryland, both also qualified in the Open division. The best showdown in the age group was the Sallie Mae 10K, where Temnikov (31:20) beat Chattin (33:29) and fourth-ranked Dave Berardi (34:52) of Baltimore.

Third is 2003 year-end champion Joe Abernethy (photo above) of College Park, Maryland, who ran 33:29 at Rockville's Pike's Peek 10K, to beat fifth-ranked Chris Samley (35:02) of Charlottesville, Virginia.

Men 45 - 49
Twelve runners qualified, with the top spot going to Mark Malander of Oak Hill, Virginia. All of the top six runners faced off at the Sallie Mae 10K, with second-ranked Jim Hage (34:12) of Kensington, Maryland defeating Malander (34:22), third-ranked and Winter leader Dan Lawson (34:53) of Gaithersburg, Maryland, fourth-ranked George Buckheit (35:41) of Reston, Virginia, fifth- ranked Jim Bates (35:49) of Hampton, Virginia, sixth-ranked Steve Chantry (36:17) of Williamsburg, Virginia, and seventh- ranked Kevin Lounsbury (36:34) of Crozet, Virginia.

Malander earns the slight edge over Hage, by virtue of defeating Hage (33:39 to 33:57) at the Pike's Peek 10K, and having a slightly better record against other top competitors.

Chuck Moeser of Sterling, Virginia captures his age group for the 10th consecutive time. The best race was the Sallie Mae 10K, where Moeser (33:37) defeated second-ranked Rick Platt (35:52) of Williamsburg, Virginia, and fourth-ranked Tim Doescher (37:43) of Herndon, Virginia.

John Nelson of Centreville, Virginia gets third, by virtue of beating Doescher two races out of three, including a fine 1:00:24 at the George Washington Parkway 10 Mile to beat Doescher (1:00:58). Fifth is Richard Morgan of Silver Spring, Maryland, whose best performance was a 1:01:36 at the Cherry Blossom 10 Mile.

Men 55 - 59
Seventeen runners qualified, again led by 2003 rankings leader Patrick Griffith of Alexandria, Virginia. The best race was the Cherry Blossom 10 Mile, where Griffith (1:03:59) demolished fourth-ranked Piriya Pinit (1:06:09) of Catonsville, Maryland, and second-ranked Ronnie Wong (1:09:01), also of Catonsville.

Third in the age group is Larry Coley of Chesapeake, Virginia, who ran 31:01 at the Virginia Beach Shamrock 8K to beat fifth- ranked Ken Mire (31:18) of Norfolk, Virginia. Wong takes third, based on taking two of three races against Pinit, including a 19:17 at Baltimore's Preakness 5K, topping Pinit's 19:26.

Breaking into the rankings for the first time is former Modern Pentathlon star Dennis Manske of Hampton, Virginia.

Men 60 - 64
The 60-64 division had some of the best competition going, with 21 runners qualifying in the Spring. Jerry Warfield of Columbia, Maryland, enters the age group with a bang, claiming the top spot.

The moment of truth was the Cherry Blossom 10 Mile, where Warfield (1:08:56) beat Winter champion and second-ranked John Haubert (1:09:13) of Alexandria, Virginia, and third-ranked Lou Shapiro (1:11:13) of Silver Spring, Maryland.

Fourth is Ben Dyer of Petersburg, Virginia, whose best was a blazing 39:46 at the St. Patrick's Day 10K. Dyer did not compete against any of the other top runners. Fifth is John Kirkpatrick of Annapolis, Maryland, whose best time was a 40:57 at the Governor's Bay Bridge 10K.

Men 65 - 69
Winter champion John Elliott of Columbia, Maryland, is upended this time by Winter runner-up Cal Fowler of Keswick, Virginia. Fowler earns the top spot by virtue of a small advantage in terms of competition defeated. His best performance was a 41:11 at Richmond's Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10K.

John Elliott also ran very well, including a 40:49 at the (downhill) Pike's Peek 10K, plus a 41:19 on flat ground at the St. Patrick's Day 10K. Third is Stan Neumann of Timonium, Maryland, who ran 33:52 to beat 2003 champion and fourth-ranked Art Morey (34:49) of Columbia, Maryland at Baltimore's Orioles Advocates 8K. Fifth is Dick Pierce of Rescue, Virginia, whose best was a 35:16 at the Shamrock 8K.

New age group entrant Jerry Lewis (photo above) of Reston, Virginia, defeats Winter and 2003 champion Jack McMahon of Rockville, Maryland. The showdown was Reston's Plaza America 5K, where Lewis (23:05) beat McMahon (24:49) and fifth-ranked Larry Dickerson (25:53) of Burke, Virginia. Lewis also ran a very fast 46:43 at the Sallie Mae 10K.

Jack McMahon won the second spot over George Yannakakis of Sparks, Maryland, by running 47:23 at the St. Patrick's Day 10K, to beat Yannakakis's 50:01, as well as fourth-ranked Robert Smith (52:44) of Comus, Maryland. This age group is getting better fast, with 11 runners qualifying in the Spring period.

The 75-79 division is again competitive, with 9 runners qualifying. Nianxiang Xie of Rockville, Maryland, the 2003 champion, again leads the division. Xie (1:27:38) destroyed second-ranked Paul Lackey (1:36:04) at the Cherry Blossom 10 Mile to win the division.

Third is Harry Bratt of Bethesda, Maryland, who ran 57:15 to beat fifth-ranked Burton Squires (64:33) of Rockville, Maryland, at the Pike's Peek 10K. Fourth is George Brown of Glen Arm, Maryland, whose best performance was a 29:50 at the Preakness 5K.

The 2003 and Winter champion, Walt Washburn of Vienna, Virginia, again leads the category. The showdown race was the Pike's Peek 10K, where Washburn (57:31) decisively defeated second-ranked Frank Pierce (64:49) of Bethesda, Maryland. Washburn also ran a 28:11 at the Westfield 5K in Chantilly, Virginia.

Men 85 & Up
Cokey Daman of Virginia Beach, Virginia, merits the opening of the 85+ age category. Daman ran a fine 51:47 at the Shamrock 8K and a 31:48 at Hampton's Running Crab 5K.
