Open Men
Thirteen runners qualified in the Open category. With the foreign runners mostly absent, the American runners came to the fore. Olympic Trials qualifier Chris Banks of Alexandria, Virginia takes the category.
The showdown race was the Rotary Twilight 8K in Rockville, Maryland, where Banks (24:41) defeated second-ranked John Supsic (25:00) of Baltimore, third-ranked Michael Wardian (25:09) of Arlington, Virginia, and fourth-ranked Mike Styczynski (25:15) of Clarksville, Maryland.
Also competitive was the Sunrise 5K in Herndon, Virginia, where Banks (15:20) defeated Wardian (15:32), and Damien's Run for Recovery 5K in Columbia, Maryland, where Wardian (15:09) beat Styczynski (15:12) and fifth-ranked Eric Kean (15:20) of Arlington, Virginia.
The oldest runners to qualify for the Open rankings were 36- year-olds Peter Sherry of Great Falls, Virginia and Mark Gilmore of Columbia, Maryland.

An Olympic Trials qualifier leads the 35-39 category, too, with Peter Sherry of Great Falls, Virginia taking the top spot. The showdown was Damien's Run for Recovery 5K in Columbia, Maryland, where Sherry (15:36) defeated second-ranked and 2003 rankings leader Mark Gilmore (15:43) of Columbia. Sherry and Gilmore also placed in the Open ranking.
Third in the age group is winter champion John Piggott of Williamsburg, Virginia. He earned the spot by running 1:13:08 at the Rock & Roll Half-Marathon in Virginia Beach, beating fourth-ranked and 2003 rankings leader Michael Mann (1:14:36) of Hampton, Virginia.
Fifth is Alex Hetherington of Stafford, Virginia, whose best performance was a 56:14 at the Annapolis 10-Mile. Eleven runners qualified in the category, up from only three a year ago.

Men 40 - 44
Chris Chattin of Columbia, Maryland, the Spring and 2003 runner- up, takes the top spot in the Summer period. His best race was the Rotary Twilight 8K in Rockville, Maryland, where Chattin (26:45) beat third-ranked Ted Poulos (28:03) of McLean, Virginia, and fourth-ranked Jean-Christophe Arcaz (28:17) of Rockville, Maryland. Chattin also recorded a fine 16:12 at the Damien's Run for Recovery 5K and a 33:14 at the Lawyers Have Heart 10K in Washington, DC.
The second spot goes to Rob Hinkle of Newport News, Virginia, who might have placed higher, but did not compete against any of the other top seven placers. His best performance was a 16:01 at the Vineyards of Williamsburg 5K. Fifth is Jon Schoenberg of Crofton, Maryland, whose best performance was a 33:57 at the Crofton 10K.

Men 45 - 49
The Spring and 2003 runner-up, Jim Hage of Kensington, Maryland, takes the top spot this time. Hage would also have led the 40-44 age group. His most serious challenge came in the Rotary Twilight 8K in Rockville, where Hage (26:27) beat third- ranked and Winter champion Dan Lawson (27:25). Hage (56:30) also outran Spring champion Mark Malander (1:01:03) of Oak Hill, Virginia at the Annapolis 10-Mile. Another outstanding performance was Hage's 33:36 at the Lawyers Have Heart 10K.
Second is Jim Bates of Hampton, Virginia, who beat fifth-ranked Steve Chantry of Williamsburg, Virginia on four occasions. Notable was Williamsburg's Run for Mental Health 5K, where Bates (16:48) bested Chantry (17:20). Fourth is Paul Okerberg of Leesburg, Virginia, whose best performance was a 1:12:56 (8th overall and 1st masters division finisher) at the Leesburg 20K.

Men 50 - 54
Always one of the most competitive age groups, the 50-54 age division had 16 qualifiers in the Summer ranking period. Again Chuck Moeser of Sterling, Virginia dominates the division.
The most competitive race was the Leesburg 10K, where Moeser (34:21) beat second-ranked Richard Adams (37:26) of Herndon, Virginia, and third-ranked Tim Doescher (37:39), also of Herndon. Moeser's best performance was a 16:30 at the Laurel 5K, defeating fourth-ranked Paul Peterson (18:17) of Bethesda, Maryland.
Fifth is Lionel Scatliffe of Alexandria, Virginia, who recorded nine qualifying performances, including a 23:55 at Washington, DC's Bastille Day 4-Mile.

Men 55 - 59
The division continues to be dominated by Patrick Griffith of Alexandria, Virginia. His biggest ranking challenges came in Fredericksburg's Heritage Festival 5-Mile, where Griffith (31:14) beat fourth-ranked Harry Wiggins (33:15) of Woodbridge, Virginia, by more than two minutes, and the Wawa Hartwood 10- Mile, where again Griffith (1:04:47) beat Wiggins (1:11:04). Griffith's best performance was an 18:25 at the Metro Run & Walk 5K.
Second is Spring and 2003 runner-up Ronnie Wong of Catonsville, Maryland, who ran a 1:08:18 at the Annapolis 10-Mile, to edge fifth-ranked Piriya Pinit (1:08:38) of Catonsville.
Third is Dan Murray Photo Above of Keswick, Virginia, who might have ranked higher, but did not compete against any of the other ranked runners. His best performance was an 18:15 at the Kiwanis 4th of July 5K in Charlottesville.

Men 60 - 64
The 60-64 division was perhaps the most competitive of all the divisions in the Summer rankings period. John Kirkpatrick of Annapolis, Maryland earns the top spot. The moment of truth was the Annapolis 10-Mile, where Kirkpatrick (1:09:02) beat third- ranked Jim Noone (1:12:41) of Fairfax, Virginia and fourth- ranked Lou Shapiro (1:12:35) of Silver Spring, Maryland. Kirkpatrick's fastest performance was the Crofton 10K, where he ran 40:11.
Second is Spring and 2003 champion Jerry Warfield of Columbia, Maryland. His most notable race was the Damien's Run for Recovery 5K, where he ran 20:02 to beat fifth-ranked Roger Kilgore (20:34) of Great Mills, Maryland.

Men 65 - 69
The 65-69 age group was just as strong as the 60-64 group in the Summer. The top spot goes to Mel Williams of Norfolk, Virginia, who won the top spot by running 1:39:53 at the Rock & Roll Half-Marathon in Virginia Beach, defeating second-ranked Stan Neumann (1:53:03) of Timonium, Maryland. Williams also ran a 21:35 at the YMCA Independence Day 5K in Virginia Beach. Neumann's best performance was a 22:03 at the Stoneleigh Stampede 5K in Towson, Maryland.
Stan Neumann gets the nod for second in a close call over the Spring champion, Cal Fowler of Keswick, Virginia, based on quality of competition defeated, because Fowler did not compete against any of the other top nine runners. Fowler's best race was a 20:43 at Charlottesville's Kiwanis 4th of July 5K.
Art Morey of Columbia, Maryland, the 2003 rankings champion, is fourth, with 1:15:04 at the Chestertown 10-Miler being his best performance, and Arthur Reynolds of Woodbridge, Virginia is fifth, having run a 22:03 at Fredericksburg's Run for Shelter 5K.

Men 70 - 74
The 70-74 age group showed unprecedented depth, with 17 runners qualifying, compared to only five a year before. Larry Dickerson of Burke, Virginia is the winner. The decisive race was the Metro Run & Walk 5K in Vienna, Virginia, where Dickerson (24:33) edged Spring champion Jerry Lewis (24:40) of Reston, Virginia.
Jerry Lewis gets second, over Winter and 2003 rankings leader Jack McMahon of Rockville, Maryland, based on Rockville's Rotary Twilight 8K, where Lewis (37:43) beat McMahon (39:47).
Fourth is 2003 runner-up George Yannakakis of Sparks, Maryland, whose performances include a 23:00 at the Bel Air Town 5K. Fifth is Mike Kelly of Newport News, Virginia, whose best performance was a 24:14 at Williamsburg's Run for Mental Health 5K.

Men 75 - 79
Spring and 2003 champion Nianxiang Xie of Rockville, Maryland is the class of the 75-79 division. His dominance was typified by the Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K, where Xie (42:02) soundly finished ahead of third-ranked Burton Squires (52:49) of Rockville, and fifth-ranked Bill Morrison (56:06) of Potomac, Maryland. Xie also ran a 25:22 at Washington, DC's Race for the Cure 5K.
Second is Ferris Portner, Jr. of King George, Virginia, whose best performance was a 28:47 at Fredericksburg's Run for Shelter 5K. Fourth is Dixon Hemphill of Fairfax Station, Virginia, whose best was a 33:16 at the Spring Forward 5K.

Walt Washburn of Vienna, Virginia again dominates the category. The decisive races were Washington, DC's Bastille Day 4-Mile, where Washburn (44:20) beat second-ranked Bill Osburn (52:50) of Bethesda, Maryland, and the Belle Haven 8K, where Washburn (50:11) again beat Osburn (1:09:33). Washburn was the oldest qualifier in the Summer rankings, and had 12 qualifying performances.
