Welcome to the Washington Running Report

Men Spring 2009

Open Men

Dismal Swamp Stomp HM, 1:03:14, 10K = 28:41

Demesse Tefera (26) ran 28:56 at the two largest 10Ks in the region to earn the second position in the Elite Division.

The Elite division is huge with 72 qualifiers. Demesse Tefera ran sub 29:00 10Ks at Ukrop's and Pike's Peek and the best he could finish was third. In between those two races he finished fifth at the Dismal Swamp Stomp HM in 1:04:16 for fifth in the race.

Patrick Cheruiyot wins the top ranking for his third place at that HM. He did win the GW Parkway 10 Mile a week later in 48:42 ahead of third ranked James Boitt (49:01) and fourth ranked Christopher Raabe (49:08). Gurmessa Megerssa had a fine Pike's Peek in 29:47 for fifth place in the race and in the rankings.

Another former champion, Steve Crane, had his best day at Van Metre, winning the five mile race in 23:52. Seventh ranked Tim Young waited until the last day to win the Marine Corps Historic HM in 1:06:57. Abiyot Abebe ran a slew of races with his best being Pike's Peek in 30:32. In March, he had outlasted Michael Wardian at St. Patrick's Day 8K 24:55 to 25:19 to take the eighth spot. Wardian ran the National Marathon, finishing second in 2:22:15. He immediately left for Virginia Beach and raced the Shamrock Marathon the next day. Not surprisingly, he did run an Olympic qualifier the second day.

Eleventh ranked Bert Rodriguez won a photo finish with Abebe at St. Patrick's Day but his best race was second local runner at Credit Union Cherry Blossom in 51:07 ahead of Kyle Smits with 51:11. Seth Hutchison took the tenth spot, running the GW Parkway 10M in 51:06 ahead of fast improving Rodriguez with 52:33.

19 & Under Men

Charlottesville 10 Mile, 54:13, 10K = 32:37

Only half a dozen runners from the last period returned to do battle. Andrew Budiansky moved up from third to take the crown with three powerful races in April. He started with Yorktown Victory 8M in 43:48. The next day Kenneth Siu pulled out all the stops and blitzed the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M in 56:48. That got him as far as runner-up. Budiansky solidified his position with a 10K overall win in 34:32 and a second overall Walsingham 5K in 16:27.

Brandon Scarff won four age groups and ended the period with an overall win at the Dundalk Pondskipper 5K in 16:40. Mike Kerrigan takes fourth with four victories led by his St. Patrick's Day 8K in 27:39.

After that it gets tricky because many runners have a superb race and then a so-so one. Eric Damtoft started May with a 35:34 10K for fifth place. Just 12, Michael Wegner whirled around the track in Westminster at McDaniel College for an excellent 17:06 5K. That same opening day, Cody Seymour takes the seventh spot just two seconds later at the Shamrock Hill 5K at the southwest corner of the region.

35-39 Men

Pacers Running Festival HM, 1:09:09, 10K = 31:22

New to the area Italian runner Edi Turco (36) of Arlington, VA quickly established himself with ten age group victories.

Edmund Burke, former three time winner of the St. Patrick's Day race back when it was a 10K, stayed away this year. Instead he watched Scott Anderson lay down the gauntlet with an impressive 26:00 in the 8K. Tim Fahey was a major factor, powering home a dozen seconds later.

Burke tested the waters at the first Crystal City Friday 5K the weekend of Cherry Blossom, finishing second in 16:03. Do not be surprised if this former 48-minute 10 miler takes a shot at that masters title next year. Pekka Stenholm joined the mix at the Kelly's Shamrock 5K in 16:06. He added a solid 56:31 at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom, which earned him fourth place.

The showdown was in Alexandria at the end of the month. Anderson opted for the 5K, winning handily in 16:03. Fahey took on Burke in the longer race. Burke won the division and the crown with 53:44. Fahey gets third in the rankings with his 55:01.

Fifth place was a close one with Edi Turco having ten age group wins and the faster 8K (St. Patrick's Day in 26:59) to John Lomogda with three age group wins and 27:15 at the Shamrock. Lomogda's 16:15 at the Cox Falcon 5K was the fastest of their 13 races.

Five runners made the Open division.

40-44 Men

Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M, 52:10, 10K = 31:23

Andrew Duncan of Washington, DC (41) made a splash at the Crystal City Fridays, racing a masters best for the year 15:59, as well as owning the top masters time in the 3K (8:59.55) and the mile (4:36.03).

Last period's champion, Andres Wright, was warned of a steamroller by the name of Ray Pugsley. He was right. It is doubtful he could imagine that the division would double in size and he would be relegated back to sixth place. Pugsley started his reign with an excellent 25:03 at the Shamrock 8K that tied the former women's world record and current Virginia state record. Wright slowed a few seconds from last period in his 8K victory at St. Patrick's Day in 27:07.

In April, Pugsley doubled at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M with the masters title and RRCA Championship title in a blazing 52:10. Nicholas Haffenreffer is new to the rankings, with his speed earning third for his 56:44 second place in the 10 miler. He had already introduced himself racing the National HM in 1:16:51. Wright ended the period with a nice hometown Frederick HM in 1:16:39.

Maybe he was taking a breather when Pugsley glided to an overall win by more than two and a half minutes at the LAWS 5K in 16:03. Another new face, Andrew Duncan, has the fastest mile and a sub 9:00 3K to his credit. So as the period wound down he took on the troops at the Crystal 5Ks (there were five Friday night races). His first was second overall in 15:59 for the fastest 5K of the year. His second was an overall win in 16:10. They earned him the runner-up spot.

Doug Mock takes the fourth ranking with his second overall 34:08 at the Clyde's 10K. He added a nifty 1:16:03 half marathon the following week in Columbia. That same day Peter Keating left hometown Columbia for a taste of Rockville Pike. His 10K in 34:20 masters win earns him the fifth spot. He won the masters division at Clyde's the week before in 34:49.

Rodney Timpson and Charles Powell both ran a 16:32 5K. Timpson gets the lean as he had two overall wins to Powell's one.

Two runners made the Open division

45-49 Men

George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile, 57:30, 10K = 34:36

These guys are so competitive that any one of a half dozen is a threat to win it all. Now that the Shamrock Festival is a two-day affair, many runners go for the double. Greg Cauller got on track early with a swift Kelly's Shamrock 5K in 16:37. Eighth place Jean-Christophe Arcaz was the only "big dog" to venture to St. Patrick's Day where he won the 8K in 28:19.

Many more made the trip to Virginia Beach. Cauller had his third fastest race as he turned back fifth ranked Tim Schuler (28:01) and Dave Berardi (28:08) with his nifty 27:52 the first day in the 8K. He was tired and the next day floated back to eighth in the half marathon. Steve Menzies took advantage, winning in 1:18:33 for fourth over a fine effort by Schuler in 1:18:56.

Next came the Credit Union Cherry Blossom where third ranked Gary Grilliot finished second at the race in 58:24, followed by seventh place Mark Neff (59:41) and Arcaz (59:44). Hernan Garbini was second overall at the Strides for Success 5K in 17:06 to snatch sixth place in the rankings.

Berardi made it a tough decision in late April with an excellent GW Parkway Classic in 57:30. That same day Cauller won his division decisively at Pike's Peek in 35:13. Combined with his head-to-head win and his 5K just a mere four seconds behind Berardi's 10M, Cauller is the division champion.

Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile, 57:29, 10K = 34:35

Dan Lawson improved at this year's St. Patrick 8K to 29:10 and won his division at Pike's Peek in 36:22 but that only earned him fifth in this growing division. Last period's champion, Pete Gibson, matched his best time exactly and twice, including an age group win at the Shamrock 8K in 27:47. Third place Maurice Pointer nearly matched Gibson's best 5K of 17:06 at Queen's Lake with his 17:09 Kelly's Shamrock. Then he poked forward with his Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in 58:36, good for third grandmaster and a mere second off of Gibson's overall win at the White Bank Classic 5M in 27:57.

Mark Malander easily returned to the top this spring winning St. Patrick's Day in 27:58, and finishing third master at Pike's Peek in 35:03. Both times were slightly off last year's victories. He added an even faster Van Metre 5M in 27:36 and dipped below to an even faster Cherry Blossom in 57:36. Only John Tuttle's brilliant 55:42 kept him from winning there.

Robert Marino had a solid 59:39 at the GW Parkway Classic to take fourth in the division. He backed that up with his BRRC Whitehall 15K in 55:59. Weems McFadden continues to enhance his resume with six age group wins and a solid third at Pike's Peek in 36:52.

55-59 Men

Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile, 59:46, 10K = 35:58

Lennie Carter (55) of Washington, DC had a solid 42:14 at Pike’s Peek to make the top 20 in his division.

Alan Pemberton tugged on Superman's cape in the winter. During the spring Moeser returned to Krypton and Pemberton volleyed up a solid 17:54 at the Scope It Out 5K. That was enough to cruise to the title with Tom Ruckert's next best 5K the same day in Cumberland at 18:27 to earn third place.

Then, the following week at Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile, Pemberton made it to national class with an excellent 59:46, annihilating the 1:02:30 he used to win last spring. Jim Wright was third at the race. He was almost 60 (May '09) and should have been resting for the coming battle for the senior crown. Instead his 1:03:34 there and Pike's Peek 10K win in 38:09 vaulted him into second place.

Another former champion, Richard Adams Jr., bought himself fifth place with a brilliant St. Patrick's Day 8K in 30:32. He was followed by Tim Morgan, the runner-up at Pike's Peek, in 39:02. Malcolm Senior, fourth at the CB, just outlasted the surging Paul Bousel 1:05:16 to 1:05:20 for sixth place. Dan Eddy chimed in with three fast 5Ks for the lucky seventh.

Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M, 1:05:02, 10K = 39:08

Geoffrey Vincent (60) of Alexandria, VA wins his division at the most competitive 8K, the St. Patrick's Day 8K in 35:29.

He's back. Mighty Mike Hazilla took down the amazingly competitive division just as he did in 2007, winning both Pike's Peek and Credit Union Cherry Blossom.

Still, he might have had a tough time if not for the ambitious double by new senior Bill Hart. Hart warmed up one Saturday in mid March with a solid Shamrock 8K in 32:14. That was just slower than Hazilla's Pike's Peek at 40:41 (he set that record in 2007 with 37:00). Then the next day Hart returned to race in the half marathon in a fine 1:28:53. A month later he stomped the field at the Dismal Swamp HM with 1:27:12. Hazilla has a mere five races in the last three years and may not be back till 2010 but the rest of field will be looking at Bill Hart.

Ronnie Wong is a long distance man but he is very competitive in races and he knows his foes. He bolted after Hazilla, coming up just short in 40:57, well aware that Bernard Wright was right behind him. Wright was two seconds faster than last year in 41:05 to earn the fourth placing. Wong tied the fastest 5K in 19:41 at Kelly's Shamrock with Langston Sheldon (Queen's Lake). Shelton, in fifth with a gridlock of speedy runners, also powered home at the Yorktown 8M in 53:58.

Former champ Jason Page won a tight battle for sixth by a combined five seconds in his two best 5Ks ahead of David Bussiere, who had seven age group wins. Bussiere's best race started the period in 19:43 at Lucky Charm, while Page waited till the next to last weekend to run 19:42 at Westfield.

Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M, 1:06:37, 10K = 40:05

Lou Shapiro was all prepared to shellac the division. He lined up confidently at the St. Patrick's Day 8K. He raced a solid 34:58, better than his win last year in 35:27. At the awards stand he was surprised to learn that only got him third place. Krupakar Revanna was going on a rampage and surprised him with a nifty 33:51.

Then he learned about the new guy in town. Bill Joyce rampaged through the new division, winning impressively in 32:16. Joyce added to his standings with a fine National HM in 1:30:33. Then, at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M, Shapiro edged past Revanna's best race with a very good 1:10:08. Joyce stepped up to the plate and smashed a home run with his decisive 1:06:37 victory. Shapiro added another fine Pike's Peek win (41:41), just slower than last year, to cement the runner-up spot.

Jim Becker rules the western region, making his mark at the Frederick HM in 1:35:39 for fourth. The next three spots are as close as can be. Michael Golash earns the five spot with his Credit Union Cherry Blossom with Richard Pane crossing the line closely (three seconds) behind him. Note that Pane won the ChronoTrack battle to get the higher award at the race. Golash has three other races faster than Pane, including a virtually identical Pike's Peek in 44:00. Along comes Winston Collins with blazing 5K speed (he would take over the best time of the year a week after this period ended). The same weekend these guys were duking it out at the Cherry Blossom, Collins was winning the Yorktown 8M in 57:18.

Shamrock Festival Half Marathon, 1:40:20, 10K = 45:31

This division is becoming crowded with tough competition. Former division champion Chan Robbins charged to an amazing nine age group wins and could not crack the top three. Mel Williams, known for racing every Marine Corps Marathon, won the half marathon in Virginia Beach. Another former champion, Duane Lougee, took on the marathon, winning his age group, though the time was well off his usual sterling race pace.

To start the period, newly minted senior Cal Fowler of Keswick, VA had laid down the groundwork with an 8K best of 37:01 at the Martha Jefferson race to start the period. The day before, Lougee finished with a second place Credit Union Cherry Blossom in 1:17:24. Fowler had taken all the chips at the Charlottesville 10M (1:16:05) to earn the runner-up spot. Williams solidified his crown with the fastest 5K of the year in May (22:32).

Robbins started the period with a solid win at St. Patrick's Day with 38:01. Two weeks later he had back-to-back wins on the weekend, first at the Scope It Out 5K in 22:55, then at the Van Metre 5M in 37:57. Perhaps too many races wore him down a little or maybe he did not have enough pressure at his races as he fell off his usual fast pace at Pike's Peek. He won going away in 48:16 by more than a mile.

Stan Neuman of Timonium, MD moved up solidly in the ranks with a swift 23:05 at the Run for Your Lungs 5K.

Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile, 1:25:33, 10K = 51:28

Jerry Lewis knew that the road to the championship ran through George Yannakakis. Lewis watched as Yannakakis drew first blood at the St. Patrick's Day 8K, besting third ranked Jack McMahon 42:10 to 42:46. Lewis was also training for a spring marathon so he went south to Virginia Beach the next weekend to race the Shamrock HM. He finished a close second to an out-of-stater and his 1:55:18 was well ahead of George's 8K race.

The big test would come the first weekend at the vaunted Credit Union Cherry Blossom. Yannakakis had won last year in 1:25:11. This year's course and its weather were different, many say better. These two battled the whole way, with Lewis winning by a mere five seconds to take the crown. Three weeks later Lewis crushed any hopes of a comeback, racing the Pike's Peek in 51:42. McMahon was second on his hometown course in 55:53.

New to the division, Mike Kelly of Newport News, VA was fourth with the fastest 5K among qualifiers, which was surprisingly only the 14th fastest race. He ended the period venturing north to succeed well at the Capitol Hill Classic 10K.

Pike's Peek 10K, 59:29

Nianxiang Xie of Rockville, MD again dominated the division. He slowed somewhat at Credit Union Cherry Blossom (1:40:38) off last year but finished more than 30 minutes ahead of fourth place Wendell Golden, who ran his race in Charlottesville. Then he ran Pike's Peek in 59:29 conceding three minutes to his course record from last year, yet again 30 minutes ahead of third place Ferris Portner Jr. who ran the Civitan 10K at the end of the period.

Andrew Polansky took the runner-up spot with two fast 5Ks, including the Jamestown Swamp Run in 35:51. Walt Washburn (86) is coming back to challenge in the summer.
