For the Washington Running Report

September is a huge month for racing with more than 120 races being run in the region. This second year race dodged torrential rains from the night before to offer a nice race for nearly five hundred racers. Early on in the race Karen Young of Boyds, MD steadily pushed her way past runners after racing down the Telegraph Road overpass in the first half mile. Young had finished well, winning her age group at the Kensington 8K just the day before. She had won her age group with a sixth overall in last year's inaugural race. Besides, in the past five years she has raced 535 races, including more than 215 10K races. She briefly held the lead racing toward the park at 3K into the race. (Photo from last year)

Gladys Fernas of Alexandria, VA moved ahead, but she was never far from sight, to win the event in 46:45. Young finished second in 47:08. Though she was looking forward, she also had a tail on her. Shelby Baxter of Alexandria, VA closed on her at the end coming up just short in 47:10.

Some might note that Baxter's net time of 46:58 was ahead of Young's with 47:04. For the top three overall gun time is used to decide the victor. For all the other racers, net time is determined with the disposable ChronoTrack D-tag.

For the men, there was little discussion as Chris Farley of Arlington, VA pulled smartly away from the field to post the best time for this event (35:39) (in photo below) after Tim Schaefer's even more dramatic victory last year in 34:04. Colin Shukie (21) of Washington, DC roared in next in a solid 36:32. More than twice his age DC Road Runners Ian Clements (45) of Alexandria, VA ripped nearly five minutes off the masters record for third overall in 37:02.

The day was so humid and the mile markers were placed somewhat randomly. That and the many meandering turns through the park in the middle of the race made for some slower than normal times. Only four racers ran times fast enough to qualify for the Runner Rankings. Clements was joined by grandmaster champion Christopher Laszlo (50) of Great Falls, VA in 40:34 and Bernard Wright (62) of Pomfret, MD in 43:24. Wright used to weigh more than 200 pounds. Now he is more like 135 pounds. He attributes a lot of that to training 120 mile a week. Indeed, he gets in a funk if he cannot train. He is aiming for a fall marathon.

The fourth runner is Robbye Langenfeld (66) of Alexandria, VA in 61:50. Even at sixty-six, she was the third grandmaster (50 and older).

Bill Stahr (48) of the Plains, VA was the second runner in the 40-49 division. With 58 10Ks this year of 111 races so far, he has often raced two and three 10Ks in a weekend. His goal this year if to break David McSherry's single season mark of 67 10Ks. That should be a piece of cake, which is the name of the Montgomery County 10K he ran for 10K number 14 the first day of spring this year. Last week he raced in the Life Without Limits 10K as did Bob Gurtler in photo below.

Bob Gurtler (74) is the mayor of Stahr's hometown. Bob prefers the 5K normally having run 49 so far this year. Still, today's age group win was gratifying in his 11th 10K of the year.

As if often the case with this course, (ran as the GW Birthday 10K in February) the AMC theaters allowed the runners to set up shop inside the theater. This year the rains had stopped and the warm air was fine for standing outside after the race. There was music and plenty of food and drink for runners.

More importantly after the got past announcing the overall and age group awards, there was a large number of nice random awards that kept runners hanging around.

The Abbott and Depend Dash for Dad 10K race supports ZERO - The Project to End Prostate Cancer. It is the only capital area race against the disease and the largest one in the nation. The Washington, DC metro area leads the country in prostate cancer death rates. Nationwide, a man dies every 18 minutes. But there is hope - education about prostate cancer risk, early detection, and advancements in treatments through research can save countless lives. All Proceeds will go to prostate cancer research and free testing in the Washington, DC area.
