Welcome to the Washington Running Report

Men Summer 2009

Open Men

Annapolis 10 Miler 49:39, 10K = 29:52

David Berdan (28) of Parkville, MD races a rarely used distance at the Survivor Harbor 7 Mile Run (35:36) to take eighth in the Elite Division.

As is often the case, the title was a nail biter. Using the Moreland Racing Factor for Elite Champion got a score of 93 and our runner-up had 95.

Daniel Too (33) of Elkton, MD was impressive with a tough field in the Bel Air Town 5K winning in 14:44, followed by his second place finish at Damien's Run for Recovery 5K in 15:09 where he was bested by Demesse Tefera (27) of Silver Spring, MD who took the gold in this first of four overall wins in 14:33. Tefera also added a solid 14:57 win at the African American Heritage Festival 5K on the 4th of July.

Too was not far off the course record at the Rockville Twilight 8K winning in 23:53. That put him ahead of tenth place Dirk Van de Heer who was second in 24:46 and Jeff Gaudette who finished third in 24:51 and eleventh place Guy Alton who was fourth in 24:57.

The following week, Tefera beat a tough crowd at the Crystal City Twilighter 5K winning in 14:35.  The race also included seventh place (former champion) Gurmessa Megressa who was third in 14:56 and ninth place Abiyot Abebe who was fourth in 15:00, as well as De Heer who came in fifth in 15:04.

The final weekend Too had an adequate 31:34 to finish second overall at the Knights of Columbus 10K behind Jeff Gaudette's 31:06. Tefera took the top spot against the Kentlands-Lakelands 5K field in 14:31 that same day to win the title.

David Cheromei of Marion, VA finishes fourth this period with two wins at the 5K:  FAB Cross Country 5K in 14:55 and Coast Guard Day 5K in 15:01.

Fifth place Mouchine Outaleb won it all at the Dundalk Heritage 6K in 18:08, Kipchirchir Bitok is sixth racing the Survivor Harbor 7 Mile to victory in 35:20.  Eighth place, Dave Berdan, was right behind him in 35:36.

Fifty-eight men earned a place in the Elite rankings.

19 & Under Men

Crystal City Twilight 5K 15:28, 10K = 32:16

Kyle Gutierrez (19) races at the Rock the House 8K to finish 52nd of 85 in the massive teen division.

Runners come and go in this largest division (85 qualifiers).

Leoule Degfae of Alexandria, VA had the top race of more than five hundred, finishing the Crystal City Twilighter in 15:28 (15th overall in a very competitive field) and he was also fourth overall in 21:09 at the PRR Twilight Festival 4 Miler.

Last year Greg Jubb was second overall in an 8K with fewer than 50 finishers. This year he took on the granddaddy of them all, Rockville Rotary Twilight, winning handily in 25:43, ahead of fifth place Kyle Gaffney's 26:01.

Tim Moyer, of Baltimore, MD and Tim Smith of Roanoke, VA were in a dead heat for third. Smith was the overall winner at the Appalachian Power Festival 10K in 32:59 while Moyer had an excellent Bel Air Town Run 5K in 15:49 to improve on his opening week second overall finish at the MCVET 5K in 16:09. Smith's second race was 18:04.

Fourteen-year-old Ethan Rissell ran an inspired 16:01 Bluemont 5K for sixth ahead of runner-up Jubb's second race 16:02 at Autism Speaks 5K and fifth place Kyle Gaffney's 16:08 at that same race. Rissell took top honors (we're talking overall) at the Greene Turtle West 5K in June in 16:13.

35-39 Men

Race for our Kids 10K 31:34

Always the smallest division, it has now been invaded by two racers who compete in many races and log many miles.

Karsten Brown had 19 races during the period and is closing in on 100 for the year as well as logging more than 800 miles raced. Our champion Michael Wardian never met a race he did not like---the longer the better. He was the overall winner in half of his eight races and never finished lower than fifth overall.  Wardian's best races included the Leesburg 20K win in 1:07:09, the Charm City 20 Miler win 1:49:53 and seventh place at the Rockville Twilight 8K in 25:13.

From the southwest, George Probst is stirring again. He raced a fancy 15:52 Coventry Commonwealth Games 5K overall victory to earn the runner-up spot. Tim Fahey ran the new summer magnet race the Crystal City Twilighter 5K in 16:10 for third place. John Lomogda gets fourth and his best effort was an age group win at the Elizabeth River Run 10K in 34:06---just before turning 40. Randy McDermott is next with his 26:50 to finish third at the RockvilleTwilight 8K.

It is worth mentioning that Karsten Brown of Front Royal, VA ran more than 40 races with 18 age group wins and a dozen overall wins at distances from 5K to 50K.

40-44 Men

Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K 25:14, 10K=32:01

Doug Mock started the period with a nice 16:21 5K but he never really took on the big races and settled for some 34:00 class 10K equivalents which this year was good enough for third in the division.

Ray Pugsley of Potomac Falls, VA was second of three sub-masters, all in the top three, last year at the Cascades Fire Chase 10K. This year he matched his 33:02 exactly as a masters runner and won it all and the following week he padded his stats by winning the masters at the Race for our Kids 10K in 33:15, ahead of Mock's 34:10.

Then, speedy Andrew Duncan of Washington, DC upset the apple cart, finishing third overall in 32:56 at the Lawyers Have Heart 10K. Just like the Jets and the Sharks, it was time for an evening rendezvous. Pugsley (who is busy expanding Potomac River Running to seven stores) is best at the 8K. Still, he captured the RRCA Championship title this past spring finishing the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile Run in 52:10---not too shabby.  The meet was set for the Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K. Pugsley had finished third overall there at age 31 in 24:28. Maybe Andrey Kuznetsov's (43) masters record 24:12 from 2001 was out of reach but he certainly had a shot at Chris Fox's 1999 time of 24:38. Pugsley finished eighth overall in 25:14 for his third fastest 8K of the year and the third fastest masters time ever at Rockville. Duncan came in with a very nice 26:23 but the title was now all Pugsley's. Former top dog Andres Wright was also there but finished well below his typical standard with a 27:34 and did not race again in this time period.  Jordan Snyder moved up to take a look at fourth place with his 27:15.

Charles Powell was interested, too, and bid his Bel Air Town 5K in 16:35. Meanwhile, John Piggott was struggling through the early part of the period in this age group despite running a 1:17:27 at the Lynchburg Half Marathon, good enough for fourth overall.

45-49 Men

Survivor Harbor 7 Mile 39:54, 10K = 34:58

This is always a tough division to rank.  The top guys are so fast but they are getting old enough now to have off days. Years ago one top masters runner got ranked third because he was third at the Rockville Twilight 8K. He told me with a half serious grin, "You can't count that race, I had a bad day." My reply was, "So did they!"

This year Dave Berardi had the fastest race at the Survivor Harbor 7 Mile in 39:54. Tim Schuler had the next best, racing second overall at the Volvo Powertrain 5K in 16:47, just three seconds behind in 10K equivalence. That and Berardi's 16:59 Rembrance Run 5K would have been enough to overcome David Haaga's triumph at the Rockville Twilight 8K in 28:04. Berardi was 28:45 just ahead of Jean Christophe Arcaz in 28:48 with Tim Schuler finishing in 28:27.

Haaga waited until the last week of the period to race 16:49 at Kentlands-Lakelands to secure the title. Schuler also added a third overall 36:06 at the Run Through History 10K to garner second. Berardi is third. Rob Hovermale takes fourth away from Arcaz racing the Volvo Powertrain 5K in 17:09. Arcaz had a six-pack of top races including Lawyers Have Heart 10K in 36:14 to hold off sixth place Hernan Garbini of Waynesboro, VA running the Independence Day 5K in 17:20.

50-54 Men

Annapolis 10 Miler 57:47, 10K = 34:46

Joe Hanle (51) of Columbia, MD is part of team of fast grandmasters belonging to the Howard County Striders.

There sure was a competitive battle at the Lawyers Have Heart 10K. The top grandmasters grudgingly expected elite racer John Tuttle to add to his massive record collection (which includes the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Miler) this year since he topped the field as the second master overall in 34:51. For our rankings he's considered out of the area since he lives in Georgia.

Former champion Mark Malander, who ran 35:45 at the race, had measured out another champion, Maurice Pointer, who finished behind him in 35:55, but he was unaware of a new gunslinger in town. Henry Wigglesworth (51) moved here from Seattle, WA just in time to sneak in ahead of those two in 35:29 and the race was on.

Four other runners in the top ten had been champions as well. Jim Hage of Kensington, MD takes the sixth spot winning at the Rockville Twilight 8K in 28:33. Stephen Chantry is back slowing a mere two seconds to 17:08 at the Vineyards of Williamsburg 5K, and Pete Gibson takes the honors there in 17:04, fastest of the year through August. Malander's second race at the Herndon Festival 5K in 17:20 is enough to out duel Chantry's 17:26 for fourth place.

Meanwhile, Pointer is turning into a racing fool with 13 age group wins. Five, ten, and twenty, he wins the Too Hot to Trot 5M in 28:11. Two weeks later he takes the division at Annapolis 10 Miler with a spectacular 57:47 before he caps off the period winning the Charm City 20 Miler in 2:03:29.

Gibson keeps putting out fine 5Ks right around 17 minutes. Wigglesworth took on the Father's Day 8K a week after Lawyers for second overall in 27:33. Then Gibson pulled a rabbit our of his hat in his seventh age group win at the Rock ‘n' roll HM in 1:17:15 to squeeze past Wigglesworth for the runner-up spot. Forty-seven runners qualified for the division.

55-59 Men

Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K 28:34, 10K = 36:14

It should be plenty difficult to decide who's who in this division. Except for one, the top 18 times were for age group wins where they did not race against their competition.

Alan Pemberton was racing very well and the favorite until Chuck Moeser puts on his racing flats. Pemberton set the stage with an 18:00 5K at Capital Crescent Run. Then he had the fastest 10K of the period at Lawyers Have Heart with a time of 37:39. He was looking around that morning and knew he would not be top grandmaster, but he was golden for his age group.

Meanwhile, the leader of the Raabe racing family, Bill, had coasted to an easy win at the Race for the Cure 5K in 18:30. Moeser came out to establish order at the Autism Speaks 5K midway through the period with 17:46.  He likes to make an appearance at the big races and this year he had a solid effort at the Rockville Twilight 8K in 28:34 to take the top prize. (Note: that old man Jim Hage (51) refused to let him pass and beat him to the finish in 28:33).  Then, at the Hartwood 10 Miler, Moeser was the top master in 60:46 ahead of Raabe's 61:58. Raabe's time was faster than anything Pemberton ran but his 17:57 at Crystal City Twilighter in July clearly dominated Raabe's 18:50 there.

Jim Thornton of Seaford, VA enters the division dramatically with a nifty 18:13 at the Vineyards of Williamsburg 5K. Tom Ruckert is holding down the fort out in western Maryland. His fastest race was 18:24 at Lisa's Run, but his best effort was being the oldest overall winner of the period winning a Distance Festival 5K in 18:30. That was enough to give him the fifth spot ahead of an old friend, Ron Knepper (59) of Waynesboro, PA who ran the Volvo Powertrain 5K in 18:21. Knepper has been absent for a few years but looks real good to move up before he takes on the 60-64 division next year.

60-64 Men

Lawyers Have Heart 10K 38:02

Everyone was waiting for the second coming of Wright. Bernard Wright of Pomfret, MD (the first) was always challenging the prolific Ronnie Wong. Mike Hazilla only comes to our rankings once a year. Jason Page at 64-years-old is gearing up to take on Bill Joyce in the next division. Now, Jim Wright of Gaithersburg, MD confidently takes the stage. After all, he had been tops in the two prior divisions: 50-54 and 55-59. His first race was an unqualified success, hustling home at the Lawyers Have Heart 10K in 38:02. Then he busted an event record at the PRR Twilight Festival 4 Mile in 24:14, far ahead of third place Page with his 26:07 before he returned to familiar territory cruising home at the Rockville Twilight 8K in 30:25.

Runner-up Bill Hart of Virginia Beach, VA started tamer with a 41:58 at the Elizabeth River 10K.  Further west, Doc Weiss matched that with an Appalachian Power Festival 10K in 41:44.  Newbee Wilson Trueheart started well at the Survivor Harbor 7 Miler in 47:17 while Ronnie Wong kept his furious racing pace that earned him 17 age group wins, but not a lot of fast times. Jason Page was well in the mix early, winning the Cascades Fire Chase 10K in 41:38.

Weiss made the first move with a swift 19:20 5K to get fourth place. Page's best race was 19:29 at Bluemont 5K but all of his seven wins were better than Weiss's second effort, thus landing him third place. That was true for Bill Hart before it hit his second try at a hometown half marathon. At the Roll ‘n' Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon he ended the period on a high note with a strong 1:28:42. Wong took fifth with an excellent win at the Annapolis 10 Miler in 68:08.

In all, 50 runners qualified for this division.

65-69 Men

Annapolis 10 Miler 67:21, 10K = 40:31

Lou Shapiro of Silver Spring, MD is as strong as ever, especially in the longer races. He never seems to get tired. Jim Becker still has the quick speed.  Bill Joyce of Herndon, VA again coolly pulverized the division. Potomac River Running fitted this elite racer for a team shirt. Joyce ran 19:47 at the Kentlands-Lakelands 5K. Shapiro had a solid 1:30:04 at the Leesburg 20K to start August, then Joyce took away Shapiro's event record from 2007 by two minutes in 1:26:13. Then, at Annapolis, Joyce capped it all with a swift 67:21 that would have him ranked solidly in the younger 50-54 division. He owned nine of the top 12 times.

In the second dozen, it was a tight battle between Winston Collins of Newport News and Jim Noone of Fairfax, VA. Collins had three times to Noone's six with his fastest at the Yorktown Freedom 5K in 20:38. Noone, who regularly runs fifty or more races a year, ran a 33:57 at the Rockville Twilight 8K.  He takes the fourth spot by virtue of three 5Ks faster than Collins' second best, 20:49.

70-74 Men

Elizabeth River Run 10K 47:17

On left, Ken Quincy (71) of Vienna, VA finishes ninth in the 70-74 division. Chan Robbins (72) of Arlington, VA had ten age group victories including a swift 23:12 at the Kentlands/Lakelands 5K.

Chan Robbins was challenged by some terrific competition this spring sliding to his lowest spot ever, fourth. His slowed a mere seven seconds at the Race for the Cure 5K this year in 23:20. Duane Lougee bested that by one second a month later. In September, Robbins returned to Kentlands-Lakelands slowing a single second to 23:13. It was not enough. Indeed, all five of Lougee's races were better than his best race of last summer and during the first weekend of the period he earned the title winning the Elizabeth River 10K in 47:17.

The really big news of the division was the reemergence of Gerry Ives who had been on the sidelines for nearly a decade. He was famous for his epic battles with Fay Bradley where both of them ran faster than an hour in the 10 mile distance at age 60. Bradley, who could not always beat Ives, was ranked number one age graded runner in the country at one time. Ives got his feet wet racing DCRRC Bastille Day 4 Miler in 30:48 to take the third spot in the division.

75-79 Men

Bel Air Town Run 5K 24:51, 10K = 51:50

Jerry Lewis of Reston, VA excels in the longer runs and is still racing marathons. George Yannakakis of Sparks, MD is best on the shorter races and he's getting faster. His time of 41:39 for the BRRC Too Hot to Trot 5 Miler was a mere eight seconds faster last year and it won him the crown. This year it was his fourth best race and just ahead of Lewis's best race the Rockville Twilight 8K in 41:29. Jack McMahon takes fifth with his Rockville Twilight 8K in 44:43.

Yannakakis won at the Annapolis 10 Miler in 1:30:43 a week after Lewis prevailed at Hartwood 10 Miler in 1:27:46.  They closely matched 10Ks, Lawyers for George and Leesburg for Jerry but Yannakakis had two smashing 5Ks to none for Lewis winning it all with the Bel Air Town Run in 24:51.

Bill Fenwick of Williamsburg, VA topped Kitty Hawk's Tom Ray twice in 5Ks. Both were best at the Vineyards of Williamsburg 5K, with Fenwick running 25:46 to Ray's 26:32.

80 & Over Men

Shawsville 5K 26:47, 10K =55:52

John Hosner of Blacksburg, VA is a legend. His older friends tell me he does a lot of hunting in the spring and fall but come summer he is back to running. The first weekend of the period brushed aside any chance for his competition.  He ran the Appalachian Power Festival 5K in 27:51.

Former champion Nianxiang Xie of Rockville, MD managed a 32:39 at Kentlands-Lakelands and he also won the Rockville Twilight 8K in 47:43 which was still not faster than a 60:30 10K pace. Hosner exploded to a 26:47 at the Shawsville Firecacker 5K in July. Ferris Portner had the next four best times even running a ten miler in August.  In all, 33 runners in this division ran 55 races this summer.
