Open Men
Army 10-Miler 47:20, 10K = 28:29
Matt Barresi from Falls Church, VA, shown here at the Twilight Festival 4 Mile, earned 10th place in the open division with a sterling Army 10M in 51:40.
For the Elite division the top races are the Army 10-Miler, Capital Running Company Veterans Day 10K, the PVI Runfest 5K, and this year the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation (GCF) Race to End Women's Cancer Half Marathon.
Demesse Tefera started the action at the PVI Runfest 5K with a wicked 14:37 good for only third overall. Abiyot Abebe, last year's champion, followed him in the same race in 14:53, but that time was only good for 13th place in the division. In fact, three others finished with a 14:53 5K race and earned spots 11, 12, and 14. Tefera won the division last period with 14:33 in a 5K.
Steve Hallinan had the second fastest 5K with his win at the Clarendon Day 5K in 14:43. In October he won the runner-up spot in the rankings with his excellent Army 10-Miler time of 49:33. While that finish time could have earned him a spot on the top of the podium, this year a course record was set in 47:20. Matt Debole earns the fourth spot with his fine 49:59 at the Army 10-Miler. Matt Baressi slowed a mere three seconds to 51:40 to gain the tenth spot he had last year.
Six of the top eight runners competed in the GCF Race to End Women's Cancer Half Marathon. In the first loop it looked as if anyone would win. By the second loop, Joel Mwaura was already dropping back, Steven Crane had faded and Michael Wardian had just enough to hold off former top ranked Gurmessa Megressa. In the third loop, a determined Demesse Tefera freed himself from elite racer Abiyot Endale to win the race and the division with 1:05:07. Endale's 1:06:22 matches Debole's Army 10-Miler. Endale added a super fast HCA Virginia 8K in Richmond with 23:41 to nudge past him.
At the Capital Running Company Veterans Day 10K, Endale heaped on the glory with a near record 30:11 to confirm third in the rankings. Mwaura followed in 30:39 to take fifth. Crane matched half marathons with Mwaura, winning it all at the Parks Half Marathon in 1:08:04; Mwaura ran the Baltimore Running Festival Half Marathon in 1:08:05. Crane also matched 10Ks with eighth place Megressa. Crane won it all at Clarendon Day 10K in 30:57; Megressa ran the same time for third at the Veterans Day 10K.
Steve Magness leapfrogged five runners with nearly identical times with two overall wins. He won the difficult (possibly long) Anthem Great Pumpkin 5K in 15:05 ahead of Crane and Abebe. Then, at the inaugural Acumen Race for a Cause 8K, he upset top ranked Tefera, 24:31 to 24:38. At that race he made it look easy and Tefera seemed too stunned to even make a try in the final downhill 200 meters to the finish.
Fifty-two runners made the Open division.

Valvoline Instant Oil Change Goblin Gallop 5K 15:01, 10K = 31:19
Last year's champion, Ezkyas Sisay, won it all at the Valvoline Instant Oil Change Goblin Gallop 5K and was runner-up at Stone Ridge 5K. Then, he aged up and moved out of the area. This period, 14-year-old John Lapointe won the teen division at both of the races to earn the 18th spot in the division.
The battle for the top went to Justin Lui who finished the College Park Cares 5K in 17:01, ahead of runner-up Michael Evans in 17:07. A day later, Michael Wegner, 13, improved his résumé running the BWI Airport 4 Mile in 22:32 to go along with his 17:29 age group win at the Howard County Police Pace 5K. Graham Wilson, from Newport News, VA edged him for the third spot with two smart 5Ks: William and Mary Homecoming 5K in 17:17 and the Oyster Pointer 5K in 17:18.
Churchill racer Adam Rosenberg (coached by 45-49 ranked runner Paul Jacobson) earns fifth at the Candy Cane City 5K in 17:29.

Parks Half Marathon 1:08:13, 10K = 30:57
Arlington's Tim Fahey had some great performances, including a 2:31:12 at the Marine Corps Marathon.

Michael Wardian continues to go long. It started with a runner-up spot at the Parks Half Marathon with his 1:08:13 finish. Just to prove he can do the "sprints," he charged home at the Clarendon Day 10K in 30:59. He went on "vacation" in October to race the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon in 2:23:13 and jogged the Marine Corps Marathon in 2:58:29. He took on the three-loop GCF Race to End Women's Cancer Half Marathon through downtown DC in 1:09:33 before heading to Richmond for his first love--the marathon. He finished second overall in 2:25:13.
Tim Fahey is the runner-up with the next three best times. He finished a solid 33:07 at the Clarendon Day 10K, 53:56 at the Army 10-Miler, and at the Marine Corps Marathon he got sort of a revenge, besting Wardian by four plus miles in 2:31:12.
A member of the U.S. Navy band, Eric Makovsky could not miss the Navy Air Force 10K, winning it all in 33:12. Fifth place Pekka Stenholm was the overall winner at the Howard County Police Pace 5K in 16:15. Steve Crowder ran a brilliant 16:00 for fourth at the more competitive Clarendon Day 5K.

40-44 Men
Army 10-Miler 52:22, 10K= 31:30
Bill Bray from Fairfax, VA cracked the top 10 in the 40-44 age division.
Wild things are happening in this division with fierce competition and upsets happening all over.
Former champion John Piggott must have been injured. With a much slower than usual time at the Under Armour Baltimore Marathon, he settled for 18th in the division. Last year Andres Wright had the fastest 5K at Ellen's Run in 15:58. This year he slowed to 16:10 for second overall, second master. He thought last year was his last shot for the masters division title since Ray Pugsley aged up.
Setting up a dynasty is not easy to do. The first step was to trash Andrew Duncan at the high stakes PVI Runfest 5K, 15:20 to 16:08. It seems like Pugsley owned Duncan. A week later, former three-time St. Patrick's Day 10K champion Edmund Burke hinted it would not be wise to rest on his laurels. He cranked out an impressive 15:22 at the Clarendon Day 5K. Still, Pugsley had depth, winning the whole race at the Run for the Door 5K in 15:27 on a course that "feels" just a little long.
Then came October and Pugsley punched out a solid Anthem Great Pumpkin 5K in 15:28. The problem was that the Army 10-Miler lit a fire under a lot of runners this year. Burke mustered a great 52:49 but did not win his division. A new runner on the scene, Sergey Kaledina, blistered the course with a 52:22, closing in on Pugsley's 52:10 national title at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom. That race capped the top two spots.
To make matters worse, Duncan fired up a mid-month overall win in 15:49 at Ellen's Run 5K. Pugsley then met Kaledina at the Home Run 10K in Rockville, MD, on a hilly course. It was not much of a battle as Pugsley whirled over the hills to a 33:13 master's victory. The competition, as such, finished in 33:48. Sergey recouped a little the following week when he clinched the top masters spot at the Charlottesville Fall Classic 10K in 33:03.
So, what was Duncan doing to prepare? To start November, he marched off to another overall win at the Edgemoor Classic 5K, albeit a pedestrian 16:29. A week later and it is time for the Veterans Day 10K. The weather is perfect, the course is flat, and the money is on Pugsley. Suddenly, Andrew Duncan pulls out a stunning upset (race reporter Jim Hage called it "mild") winning 31:53 to Pugsley's 31:56.
Now, we have five races faster than 32:00 10K equivalent. The Moreland Racing Factor and the Army 10-Miler placement have Kaledina edging Burke 37 to 35. Pugsley and Duncan split head-to-head wins and, with five races to four, Pugsley has a tiny edge with a MRF of 60 to 59. By perhaps the narrowest of margins, Duncan gets the third spot by virtue of the "What have you done for me lately?" principle.

45-49 Men
Army 10-Miler 56:18, 10K = 33:52
The spring champion, David Haaga, took an early lead winning the Parks Half Marathon in 1:16:38. Still, fourth place Dave Berardi was not so far behind in 1:17:23. Third place Dai Roberts started October with an impressive LiveStrong Sandbridge Dolphin Challenge 10K overall win in 34:39. He bolstered his stock on Halloween, finishing third overall at the Blue Moon Wicked 10K in 35:25. (Ed note: you can see a photo of Roberts in race costume on our Web site race coverage.)
Then came the Army 10-Miler and Haaga excelled his way to the top with 56:18. A month later Tim Schuler finished second overall at the Rockville 10K in 35:00, a mere three seconds ahead of Haaga. That was not enough to pass Haaga's 33:52 10K equivalent. Schuler got even closer at the Capital Running Company Veterans Day 10K with a master's win in 34:25. Fifth place Jean Christophe Arcaz was an age group winner in 34:59.
Coach Paul Jacobson continues to improve, moving up to sixth place with a sensational 17:00 at the Candy Cane City 5K. Ted Poulos, the synonym for prolific racing, has run an average of 200 races a year for the last dozen years. Now, nearly healed from last winter's foot injury, he is fully up and running. He had 14 age group wins including a nifty 36:01 for second overall at the Jug Bay 10K.

National Press Club 5K 16:40, 10K = 34:46
Henry Wigglesworth ran 16:40 at the National Press 5K and 34:48 at the Boo! Run for Life 10K to land the top spot.
Steve Anderson slowed a minute at the Army 10-Miler to 59:21, the race that won him the division last year but was only good enough for fourth place. Already Henry Wigglesworth had geared up, racing the top 5K of the year. His National Press Club time was 16:40 and he added a third overall Boo! Run for Life 10K finish in 34:48.
Wigglesworth was competing against two racers from the Tidewater region who battle for supremacy in that area: Steve Chantry and Pete Gibson. In all but one of their races, they finished in the top three overall or better. Chantry's last hurrah in the division was a 16:48 at the Great Prostate Cancer Challenge 5K in Baltimore. Then he beat Gibson back in Newport News 17:02 to 17:11. Gibson powered to the second overall spot in November at the Kiwanis Town Center 5K in 16:51 to close the gap. That same day Chantry won the Yorktown Battlefield 10 Miler in 58:42.
Maurice Pointer, the 2009 Spring Rankings champion, added 12 age group wins. His best race, the Falls Road 15K in 56:06, earns him seventh. Former champion Dan Lawson ran the Candy Cane City 5K in 17:15 for fifth just ahead of a new player Elmer McPhail who popped a 28:38 at the Down's Park 5 Mile the very same morning.

55-59 Men
Army 10-Miler 60:15, 10K = 36:15
Chuck Moeser won in the summer. He also won last fall. His first race of this fall, Life Without Limits 10K in 37:09, would not have won the 60-64 division. He won again at the Army 10-Miler in 60:15, which gave him the division. But Mr. Moeser, if you think a 36:15 10K equivalent will win in the winter, let me remind you that the last person to take your crown, Steve Chantry, has aged up and just ran a 16:48 5K (10K = 35:03).Tom Ruckert has to feel as if he is going downhill. He skied the famous mountainside drop race, the Great Allegany 15K, in a record 56:41. Usually we take less stock in aided courses but he backed that up with an overall 5K win in 18:43 and an 18:36 at the Autumn Glory 5K. Ken Miller takes third at the newly named HCA Virginia 8K to end the period. His time was 30:34.
Jim Doherty ran the fast Bita's Run 5K course in 17:49. His 20:05 overall win at the Seaside 5K lends credence to a short course. The race was certified in 2001, but according to their site, it was not run on that course this year. Thus, it was listed as a three mile course per their map.
Gary Grimsley ran the PVI Runfest 5K in 18:59. David Dickson is close by with a 19:02 at Ellen's Run 5K and Paul Peterson, who beat Dickson 31:33 to 32:24 at the Kensington 8K, is seventh.

60-64 Men
HRC 10K 37:08
Bill Taylor from Woodbridge, VA put away the 60-64 division at the HRC 10K with a smoking 37:08 overall win.
This largest men's division was looking at a long reign by a newly anointed king: Jim Wright. Somebody should have noticed that Bill Taylor was second at the Army 10-Miler last year at age 59 with a 62:01.
Last year's champion, Ronnie Wong, went nuts and cranked seven straight weeks of marathons, 17 for the year, to take all the juice out of his 5K. He won the Police Pace 5K again, this time in 19:42 after winning the division with 19:12 last year. This barely earned him fourth ahead of two Virginia Beach competitors, David Bussiere (19:42) and Bill Hart (19:46).
Third place Jason Page had four 5Ks faster. First, he improved his Great Frederick Fair 5K from 19:58 to 19:20. Then, on Halloween, at the Headless Horseman 3 Mile, he rode home in 18:33. None of this was even close.
Bill Taylor put away the division at the HRC 10K with an incredible 37:08 overall win. That just misses Mike Hazilla's fabled course record of 37:00 at the Pike's Peek "PR maker" 10K. Jim Wright is tough and his 1:27:41 at the Dave Herlocker Memorial Bachman Valley Half Marathon on monster hills nearly caught Bill Hart's "Best of 2009" time at Dismal Swamp Stomp in the spring. Then Taylor capped the division with a win at the Army 10-Miler in 63:49.
Wright started November with an excellent Rockville 10K win in 39:18 and added a division's best 18:52 5K at TLC King of the Road 5K. For now, Bill Taylor is king of the road.

65-69 Men
Army 10-Miler 1:06:29, 10K 40:00
Bill Joyce has been hogging the 65-69 title ever since he aged up. It would be interesting to see how he would match up with Patrick Griffith, who owned this division for years until he retired to Florida. (By retired I mean, not racing around here. Griffith, who aged up in November, is still racing as fast as ever.)
Meanwhile, Joyce took the top spot besting runner-up Jim Noone 1:06:29 to 1:10:55 at the Army 10-Miler. Noone is also a member of the 50 Plus Club (50 races in one year). He is better at the 5K. While Joyce won the Anthem Great Pumpkin 5K race in 19:58, Noone was right on his heels, racing the Clarendon Day 5K in 20:06.
Last year's champion, Jim Becker, had a solid effort at the Great Frederick Fair 5K in 20:17 with Lou Shapiro right behind at the Bita's Run 5K in 20:24. Both of these guys ran excellent half marathons. Becker won the truly hill-challenged Dave Herlocker Memorial Bachman Valley Half Marathon in 1:34:59, while Shapiro rumbled through Rockville at the Parks Half Marathon in 1:36:19. Shapiro was not idle, winning his division ten times. His races included the year's best 3:26:23 at the Marine Corps Marathon, followed closely by two super 10K wins. At 68, he was the oldest overall winner of a race.

Capital Running Company Veterans Day 10K 44:45
Gerry Ives is now back in gear. He started easy, matching Duane Lougee's fine Army 10-Miler in 1:18:21 with a win at the National Press Club 5K in 22:36. After that he fired up the period with three races faster than anyone has run all year. His Clarendon Day 5K time was 21:52 and third place Chan Robbins finished in 22:51. His Star Kid 8K in 36:44 was three minutes ahead of Robbins' otherwise impressive Back to School 8K. Before the start of the Veterans Day 10K, Chan could read the writing on the wall. He had won that race last year in 47:05 and it was a foregone conclusion that Ives was going to bust that up. He did so with a speedy 44:25 to set the event record for the race.
Always a prolific racer, Robbins had six age group wins. On the horizon, fourth place Vitalij Garber ran a pretty solid 1:20:59 at the Army 10-Miler to send warning signs. He also ran a spiffy 3:50:38 at the Marine Corps Marathon.

National Press Club 5K 25:03, 10K = 52:15
George Yannakakis started the period with an excellent 25:03 at the National Press Club 5K. Jerry Lewis won the Parks Half Marathon in 2:05:17 and he also improved his marathon at Marine Corps to 4:31:41. Last year Yannakakis ran only one race, the Army 10-Miler. This year he qualified with the 5K and the Army 10-Miler. Lewis came out on top 1:26:58 to 1:28:04 to take the division. Lewis also closed on the top 5K with his 25:10 McLean race the following week,
Lewis really wanted to take a shot at one of the longest standing Capital Running Company Veterans Day records---Bill Osburn's 50:00 from back in 1998. Lewis was ready, but in the first 50 meters of the race with all of the pushing and shoving, he took a tumble and had to watch the race from the sidelines. Third place Jack McMahon had won at Rockville in 56:01 and without Lewis to push him, he coasted to victory at the Veterans Day 10K.

Galax Autumn Days 5K Run 27:49, 10K = 58:02
Joseph Rutkowski of Dundalk, MD is delighted to be in the new division. Even though he slowed nearly two minutes at the Crossroads 95 5K, his best race there in 33:21 far outclassed the qualifiers. He dodged a bullet though as for the fourth year in a row John Hosner's only race was the top race of the fall. After that single contest, Hosner is back in the woods a'hunting.
George Brown was second to Rutkowski in a couple of events. Norvill Jones, who just turned 80, outpointed prolific racer Walt Washburn with two 5 milers. By the end of 2009, Washburn, 87, will have run 300 races since he turned 80.
