Welcome to the Washington Running Report

Best of 2009

By James Moreland

They got the money, hey
You know they got away
They headed down south and they're still running today
Singing go on take the money and run
Steve Miller  1976

The running boom is not aware of any recession and the numbers of participants keep growing. For the Best of 2009 there were 936 races and almost 500,000 runners, nearly 100,000 more runners than last year. In the chart below, the percentage field reflects the number of ranked runners compared with the total runners in all the races for that period.

Here are a few tips to help you analyze the stats:

1. Runners who win a race or win their division in a race earn an asterisk next to their name.

2. Open runners only get an asterisk for an overall win.

3. The Speed Alone (reported at the beginning of each division) is the fastest qualifying time run for each division.

4. If the Speed Alone is in red, it means the division champion ran it.

5. (MRF) is for the Moreland Racing Factor.
