Welcome to the Washington Running Report
Men Division 2009
Open Men
Army 10-Miler 47:20, 10K = 28:29
Abiyot Endale of Silver Spring, MD repeats as the winner of the Capital Running Company Veterans Day 10K in 30:11 in the fourth fastest time for the event. It was an amazing year with some fantastic races.
The open champion, Demesse Tefera, had the top five qualifying times. Of Tefera's top three, he finished third overall once and fifth overall twice. In March, he won it all at the SunTrust National Half Marathon in 1:05:15. A week later he blazed the Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10K in 28:55 behind a Virginia state record 28:21. Then, in April, he finished third at Pike's Peek 10K in 28:57 behind a Maryland record 28:30. In his 22 races with 13 wins, his worst placing was fifth at the Dismal Swamp Stomp Half Marathon in 1:04:16.
Former champion Gurmessa Megerssa bested runner-up Abiyot Endale at Pike's Peek 10K 29:28 to 30:03. After that, Endale returned the favor at the Capitol Hill Classic 10K, winning it all in 30:50 against Megressa's 30:56 second best race. Endale also had six other much faster races and head-to-head wins at the Capital Running Company Veterans Day 10K 30:11 to 30:57 and at the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation (GCF) Half Marathon where he was second overall in 1:06:22. He also had the Best of 2009 4 mile at We've Got Your Back 4 Mile in 18:48, ahead of fifth place Abiyot Abebe's 19:17. Steve Crane lost to Abebe at the Alexandria Turkey Trot 5 Mile to start the year 24:02 to 24:28. That was Abebe's best race. Crane would come back and defeat Abebe four times including a special Van Metre 5 Mile in 23:52 versus 25:17.
Mouchine Outaleb gets his sixth place spot with seven overall wins and a second place finish to champion Tefera at the George Washington Birthday Classic 10K in his eight tries. His Moreland Racing Factor (MRF) score was 135, but he passes by seventh place Daniel Too with two close wins. It was down to the wire at the International 5K Run for Celiac Disease 15:40 to 15:42 and the BWI Airport 4 Mile 19:37 to 19:40. He also bested eighth place Tim Young at the YMCA Turkey Trot 5K in Fredericksburg 14:39 to 14:43.
The next two had virtually the same top six races. Too had four overall wins including a powerful near event record 23:52 at the Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K. Tim Young's two big wins were the Marine Corps Historic Half Marathon in 1:06:57 and the Hartwood 10 Mile in 50:55. Too passed a lot of runners in Rockville to defeat him with an MRF of 149 to 117.
Long distance man Michael Wardian is next with his 2:22:15 second place finish at the SunTrust National Marathon. The next four are razor close. David Cheromei finished third at the SunTrust National Marathon in 2:23:40, adding four overall wins and a 14:53 Galax Autumn Days 5K. Bert Rodriguez comes on strong to edge 13th place Kyle Smits at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile 51:07 to 51:11. Normally, that would make a good case for Rodriguez to catch 11th place Seth Hutchinson's 51:06 at the George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile. However, it was a slower day for Rodriguez as he finished there in 52:33. Hutchinson also had an excellent USA Cross Country Championships 12K in 38:52 ahead of Rodriguez, as well as Wardian and Jake Klim.

19 & Under Men
USA Cross Country Championships 8K 24:55, 10K = 31:36
The teen division is the hardest. Nearly 20% of all the runners are from this division, yet only 25 qualify for the year-end rankings. Andrew Budiansky came north from Williamsburg on New Year's Day to finish fourth overall on the cross country Rotary Resolution 10K in 34:37. Then, in February, he was ninth overall at the prestigious Anheuser-Busch Colonial Half Marathon in 1:15:11. In April, he capped the division with an excellent Yorktown Victory Run 8 Mile in 43:48.
Darren Simpson is the runner-up with a fine 16:20 at the Holton-Arms Run for Wellness 5K. In May, he won the Heart of Virginia 10K outright in 34:31. Kenneth Siu got it together the first weekend in April with an excellent Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in 56:48. Fourth place Arthur Leathers tore through Carroll County as the overall winner in five of the seven races he ran. His best was the Run With the Knights 5K in 16:36.

35-39 Men
Parks Half Marathon 1:08:13, 10K = 30:57
Eighth-ranked sub master Pekka Stenholm of Columbia, MD ran all four of the major ten milers, winning his age group in Baltimore on a rainy day in 59:43.
Usually one of the smallest divisions, this division will probably be even smaller as four of the competitors aged up during the year. Runner-up Ray Pugsley made the move first in February, but not before he notched an excellent 31:54 at the Jingle All the Way 10K. On that same course he would later set his masters PR at the Capital Running Company Veterans Day 10K. By April he was running the Credit Union Cherry Blossom to a RRCA masters title in 52:10. Edmund Burke stayed in the age group, winning at the George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile in 53:44. He also set the Best of 2009 5K record with 15:37 at the Blood Water Mission 5K in May.
While our champion Michael Wardian prefers the marathon distance, he did run nine of his 31 races in the open division. His best 5K was the DCRRC Bluemont 5K in 15:39. Still, it does seem that he might run them faster considering his Clarendon 10K in 30:59. He also finished a mere second ahead of Pugsley at the Rockville Twilight 8K in 25:13. At long distance, Wardian owned the top six times with a 20 mile, and marathon, and three half marathons. His best effort was the Parks Half Marathon for second place in 1:08:13.
Tim Fahey's Army 10-Miler in 53:56 was hardly coasting as he just missed catching Burke. He was 55:01 at the Parkway. Randy McDermott ran the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in 54:22 for fifth. Former Open champion, George Probst, is back on the warpath, finishing sixth with his DePaul Community Resources Star City Half Marathon in 1:12:52.

40-44 Men
Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M 52:10, 10K = 31:23
Ray Pugsley of Potomac Falls, VA is the masters champion for the year, finishing the Capital Running Company Veterans Day 10K in 31:56.
Ray Pugsley was busy gearing up to take the masters title. Andres Wright had won the winter title with an excellent 33:52 at the Jingle All the Way 10K. Wright knew he could get his 5K under 16:00, but he also knew it would not be enough to stop the Pugsley avalanche. Of the top 15 times, Pugsley had a dozen. Runner-up Andrew Duncan would best Wright at Ellen's 5K 15:49 to 16:10. Then, he would argue for a top seeding with a very nice Lawyers Have Heart 10K in 32:56.
Pugsley's only race in the winter was an otherworldly 25:20 at the USA Cross Country Championships 8K. The next month he ran a 25:03 in a world-class field at the Shamrock 8K. Then, in April, he took the masters title at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in 52:10. He had nine of the top ten times, including a head-to-head domination of Duncan at the Rockville Twilight 8K, 25:14 to 26:23. Then, he added the Best of 2009 5K at the PVI Runfest in 15:20, well ahead of Duncan's 16:20.
He earns the crown but it is not going to be easy to keep it. That one lonely time in the top ten for Duncan was at the Veterans Day 10K in 31:53 and Pugsley (setting a masters PR) did not arrive at the finish line for three more seconds. Then, at the Army 10-Miler, Edmund Burke aged up and smoked a 52:49. Sergey Kaledina rode home with the title at the fall Runner Rankings championship in a blistering 52:22.
Doug Mock ran two solid 10 milers in the low 56's to take fourth ahead of fifth place Peter Keating's Police Pace 5K in 16:21. Sixth place John Piggott finally started to get his groove back in the fall with a nice effort of 1:15:06 at the Rock ‘n' Roll Half Marathon.

45-49 Men
Army 10-Miler 56:18, 10K = 33:52
The times at the Pike's Peek 10K were tame this year. Greg Cauller won easily in 35:13. Tim Schuler had already set that time aside to start the year, finishing third overall at the Ashburn Farm 10K in 34:56. The Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile was mild mannered as well, giving Gary Grilliot sixth place for his 58:24 time. Dave Berardi had already run 58:13 at the much more difficult RRCA 10 Mile Challenge. He nudged just ahead of Cauller's Best of 2009 16:37 at Kelly St. Patrick's Day Shamrock 5K with his excellent 57:30 at the George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile.
Tim Schuler added a couple more top three overall finishes before boosting himself toward the top with a superb Capital Running Company Veterans Day 10K in 34:25. Meanwhile, David Haaga was taking the long way around, racing the Best of 2009 marathon at the B & A Marathon with 2:43:29. Back home, he was the top master at the Parks Half Marathon in 1:16:38, ahead of Berardi's 1:17:23. Then, at the Army 10-Miler he pulled out all the stops and took the division with a fine 56:18. Schuler's two swift 10Ks just hold off Berardi for the runner-up spot.
Cauller's fourth best race, at the Shamrock 8K, was just ahead of Berardi but Berardi had three more races faster than Cauller's second best race, including the Survivor Harbor 7 Mile in 39:54. Fifth place Jean Christophe Arcaz rebounded nicely with his 22nd race of the year. It was an excellent 34:59 at the Veterans Day 10K, more than a minute faster than all his other races.

50-54 Men
Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile 57:29, 10K = 34:35
Henry Wigglesworth was very economical. He qualified with a minimum four races, two each in the summer and the fall. Mark Malander had nine races during the year. He won the spring with an excellent Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile. Maurice Pointer had a brilliant year, winning 32 of the 34 qualifying races he entered. Pete Gibson and Steve Chantry battled all year long in the Tidewater region.
Of the top three, Malander had the fastest time, besting Pointer at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Miler with 57:29 to 58:36. Pointer was top master at the much more difficult Annapolis 10 Mile with his 57:47. Wigglesworth had the fastest 5K time of the year at National Press Club 5K 16:40 and placed 3rd overall at the Boo! Run for Life 10K in 34:48.
Pointer had five Best of 2009 times with distances from 1500M to the marathon. Malander's only "best" was the Van Metre 5 Mile in 27:36. Wigglesworth was second overall on the Father's Day 8K in 27:33 to nearly match him. Gibson was an overall winner at the White Bank Classic 5 Mile in 27:57. Then, the following week, he ran the Shamrock 8K in 27:47 and the next day followed with his second fastest half marathon in 1:18:56. Chantry added the Great Prostate Cancer Challenge 5K in 16:48, matching Gibson's Rock ‘n' Roll Half Marathon of 1:17:15 exactly.
So, Pointer's Annapolis race holds off the southern men with his only other time in the top 15--his Credit Union Cherry Blossom race--to take third place. Along with five other races near the top, Gibson's 16:51 at the Kiwanis Town Center 5K gives him fourth. Chantry's second best race was the Yorktown Battlefield 10 Mile in 58:42 to take fifth place.
For the title, we go to the Moreland Racing Factor (MRF). Using their top four races, Wigglesworth outpoints Malander 71 to 46. Their top three races were very even. Still, while Malander's fourth race was as third master at Pike's Peek in 35:03, his fifth race was a head-to-head loss at the Lawyers Have Heart 10K, 35:29 to 35:45. Pointer was third at that race in 35:55.

YMCA Turkey Trot 5K 17:11, 10K = 35:51
Ken Krehbiel of Washington, DC runs a solid Veterans Day 10K, finishing 25th in the Best of the Year Rankings.
"All I wanted to do was gracefully jog into retirement," said Chuck Moeser. So, he starts off the rankings year winning the YMCA Turkey Trot 5K in 17:11 for the fastest time of 2009. Alan Pemberton quietly steps up with the Best of 2009 10K, winning the No Rail on the Trail in 36:28. In the spring (while Moeser was out cycling) Pemberton took over the division with an excellent Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in 59:46. Grumbling all the way, Moeser now had to come out in the summer to answer the challenge. Pemberton had a nifty Crystal City Twilight 5K win in 17:57. Moeser punched home a powerful 28:34 at the Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K. Toward the end of the year he returned to the Army 10-Miler for a solid 60:15 while Pemberton won the surprisingly difficult Parks Half Marathon in 1:24:43.
Both runners had six major wins and all eight of Moeser's races were in the top 12. Still, it came down to a close MRF rating of 109 to 94. Basically, Moeser was third overall once and defeated eight more ranked runners on his way to the crown.
Tom Ruckert takes third place with the impossibly fast course Great Allegany 15K in 56:41 and a nifty Lisa's Run 5K in 18:24. Richard Adams rebounded with an excellent 38:04 at the Jingle All the Way 10K to set the event record. [Pemberton broke it back in 2009 with 37:52 for winter 2010]. Adams also bested Jim Wright at the Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K 31:24 to 32:11, though Wright was now 60. Right on their heels for fifth, Wright won big on perhaps the fastest 10K course, Pike's Peek 10K, in 38:09 after a very nice Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in 63:34.

HRC 10K 37:08
Fifth place Langston Shelton stole the winter division with the only time in the top 44 races, the St. Kateri's Run with the Son 5K in 19:39. Fourth place Ronnie Wong was piling up races like cordwood, racing 14 times in the winter. He ended the year with 47 qualifiers, 37 wins and finished 18 more marathons on his quest to be a "50 State Marathoner." It should be noted, Wong did say he wanted to have an age group win in each state and he added seven more states with wins.
Third place Jason Page had a slew of fast 5Ks as he prepares to move on to the next division. His best effort at the Headless Horseman 3 Mile in 18:33 earns him third place. He also had five of the six top 5Ks for the year behind division winner Wright's King of the Road 5K in 18:50.
This competitive division is always huge, with 48 qualifiers. This year there were four different winners and only runner-up Bill Hart finished second more than once; he joined the division in early spring. If not for the twice-a-spring appearance of the rare Mike Hazilla, winning Pike's Peek 10K and the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile, Hart might have won the division in the spring. Hazilla's 40:41 was far off his 37:00 event record from 2007 and Wong's 40:57 and sixth pace Bernard Wright's
41:05 were right in the mix. Hart put in his bid with three of the top ten races, all half marathons. His first (a day after an 8K win in 32:14) was the Shamrock Half Marathon in 1:28:53. In April, he improved to his best race at the Dismal Swamp Stomp in 1:27:12.
In April, Jim Wright was polishing off the last of his four major races as a 59-year-old at Pike's Peek 10K in 38:09. Just as he had five years before, he was itching to age up and take the new crown. Back then he won the Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K in 32:11 and this year he notched a marvelous 30:25. He had already used his record PRR Twilight Festival 4 Miler in 24:14 and division win 38:02 at Lawyers Have Heart 10K to distance himself from Hart. He added the Rockville 10K in 39:18 to give him the top five times in the division.
Just as with Hazilla did in the spring, Bill Taylor won the fall period with a swift 10K, the HRC, in a Best of 2009 37:08, and an excellent Army 10-Miler. Had these two titans made enough qualifiers, who knows what might have happened?

Army 10-Miler 1:06:29, 10K = 40:00
Bill Joyce was a perfect 16 for 16, winning all of his races, including all three major 10 milers: Army, Cherry Blossom, and Annapolis. In fact, 12 of his races were major. Though he raced against most of the top runners, he never did have a head-to-head with runner-up Jim Becker, who was 12 for 12 in his races. He usually runs fast 5Ks and his Volvo Powertrain Run in 19:49 was just on the heels of Joyce's Best of 2009 19:47 at the Kentlands/Lakelands 5K. Still, perhaps Becker's best race was an excellent 1:34:59 at the Dave Herlocker Bachmann Valley Half Marathon. In time it is no match for Joyce's "valleyless" SunTrust National Half Marathon in 1:30:33, but you would see more than a few of the lead runners there slowing to a crawl coming up from its "valley" floor.
Lou Shapiro is the oldest of the top 12 qualifiers, yet he had almost as many age group wins as the other three runners in the top four. He won 36 of his 44 races, including the oldest overall winner we have seen, winning the Run for the Family 5K outright in September. His best race at Pike's Peek was a 41:41 10K, not far off Joyce's eighth best effort and Best of 2009 10K at Lawyers Have Heart in 41:28. Becker confirms the third spot, finishing ahead of Shapiro at Bachmann Valley.
Fourth place Jim Noone is a prolific racer as well, finishing 13 races each in both the 60-64 and 65-69 division. Once he aged up, he was nearly unbeatable, winning 11 of 13. He was second to Joyce at the Army 10-Miler. He had his best race with a swift 5K at the Clarendon 5K in 20:06. At fifth, Revanna Krupakar had a stellar 33:51 at the St. Patrick's Day 8K upsetting Shapiro. With these men racing so many fast times, the only other runner with a top fifty time was Winston Collins. Collins takes sixth place with a solid 20:38 at the Yorktown Freedom 5K.

Veterans Day 10K = 44:25
Gerry Ives took over command of the 70-74 division setting the Veterans Day 10K record in 44:25 and then on the same course for 2010 set the Jingle All the Way 10K record in 44:10.
Last year the duel was between Chan Robbins and Duane Lougee racing a combined 41 age group wins. This year they upped the ante to 43 wins. Winning 31 of his 33 races boded well for Robbins. Still, after the first two periods Mel Williams looked golden. For eleven months his VAB Turkey Trot 10K time of 45:48 held up. Always sensational at the longer races, Williams ran an excellent Shamrock Festival Half Marathon in 1:40:20. Lougee's best race was a 46:33 at the Fort Eustis 10K.
Chan Robbins started his marvelous run at the Alexandria Turkey Trot 5 Mile with a solid 37:20 that held up for nearly six months. Some of the other top runners, such as Cal Fowler (Charlottesville 10 Mile in 1:16:05) and Skip Mullaney (Pepsi 10K in 45:40), did not race quite enough to qualify.
Then, the sleeping giant, Gerry Ives, awoke from a 10-year slumber. He was tentative, winning the Bastille 4 Mile in 30:48. Then, remembering the glory days, he geared up and popped at 21:52 at the Clarendon 5K in September. He followed that with a Star Kid 8K triumph in 36:41. Then, feeling his oats, he set the Veterans Day 10K record with a division-winning 44:25.
On the horizon, elite racer John Elliott is back on the playing field.

Jingle All the Way 10K 50:34
All but two of the top 30 times belong to two men. Last year's champion, George Yannakakis, started nicely in the winter besting Jerry Lewis at the Jingle All the Way 10K 50:34 to 50:52. Lewis returned the favor, winning Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in a squeaker, 1:25:28 to 1:25:33.
In the summer, Yannakakis responded with the fastest 5K in 24:51 at the Bel Air Town Run, besting Lewis' fine Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K victory of 41:29. In the fall Lewis rebounded to win again at the Army 10-Miler, 1:26:58 to 1:28:04. So it comes down to the Moreland Racing Factor (MRF) for these two runners who raced a combined 34 times. Matching their best 16 races, Yannakakis wins the division 165 to 145.
Third place Jack McMahon had 13 age group wins, including a second place finish at the St. Patrick's Day 8K in hailing distance of Yannakakis with 42:46. Larry Dickerson had a slew of 5Ks topped by the Virginia Run Turkey Trot in 26:17 to take fourth.

80 & Over Men
Shawsville 5K 26:47, 10K = 55:52
John Hosner is the legend and almost raced enough to take the crown. One more race would have added a fall crown to his great summer. Nianxiang Xie took full advantage.
His five races--all major--were the top five of the division. He did slow a tad but won convincingly at the Pike's Peek 10K with 59:29. Still, at home at the Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K, he raced through the night in 47:43.
Ferris Portner and George Brown had a photo finish in the winter. Portner took the runner-up spot with his spring best J Brian's Tap Room 15K in 1:56:06. Brown had a best time of 37:18 at the Super Bowl 5K. Fourth place Wendell Golden matched Portner's 10 miler with his Charlottesville race with 2:13:14.
Ageless Walt Washburn, 87, is next as the fastest of 12 runners who are 85 and older. He won his age group 16 times.
