Welcome to the Washington Running Report
Winter Men 2010
Open Men
Anheuser-Busch Colonial Half Marathon, 1:06:10, 10K = 30:01
Dirk De Heer of Silver Spring, MD broke the tape at the Van Metre 5M in 24:18 to earn the runner-up spot in the Elite Division.
Ryan Carroll of Portsmouth, VA has always been a terror in the Tidewater Region, winning 25 races in 2009. Still, he was only 20th in the fall and 20th for 2009. Once the winter rankings period started, he blitzed the division in the first week and it was all over. At the Cape Henry Runfest 10 Mile, he was tops in 50:13. Four days later he had the top 5K in 14:40 among qualifiers at the Turkey Derby 5K.
For the second place listing in the rankings, Dirk De Heer of Silver Spring, MD edges Tim Young of Fredericksburg, VA. De Heer's photo finish win against eighth place Robert Wade at the MCRRC Shooting Starr 4 Mile (21:04) is no match for Young's third overall YMCA Turkey Trot 5K in 14:41. Still, by the end of the period using the "what have you done for me lately" principle, de Heer's Van Metre 5 Mile victory in 24:18 (ahead of last year's Runner of the Year Demesse Tefera's 24:22) trumps that and Young's period-ending 24:37 victory at the Organ Donor 8K.
The previous week Tefera had been second overall at the Anheuser-Busch Colonial Half Marathon in 1:08:27, ahead of Michael Wardian's 1:08:41. Wardian takes the sixth spot. Guy Alton of Richmond, VA squeezes between the two with an excellent YMCA Turkey Trot 5K in 14:58 and an overall win to end the period at the Holton Elementary 5K in 15:07. Jon Molz of Richmond, VA takes seventh place with a dandy overall win at the Frostbite 15K in 48:44.
The next three spots are intertwined. Adam Condit of Ashburn, VA is a tad faster at 25:19 at the Van Metre 5 Mile. Former champion Steve Crane of Arlington, VA is a couple strides further back, though second overall at the Alexandria Turkey Trot 5M in 25:24. Crane ran a 23:52 in 2009 at Van Metre. Robert Wade had a much better race New Year's Eve, winning it all at the Fairfax Four Mile in 20:03. The last week in February, however, sorted them out. Wade won the Love the Run You're with 5K in 15:23 while Crane was next in 15:55, with Condit trailing in third at 16:07.
Will Viviani of Arlington, VA takes the next standing as runner-up at the Fairfax Four Mile in 20:05. He also matched overall wins in 15:27 with Adam Otsot of Williamsburg, VA. Karl Dusen crowns the dozen with a nifty win at the YMCA Turkey Chase 10K in 32:13 and a solid win in the snow at the DCRRC Al Lewis 10 Mile in 53:40. Edmund Burke of Burtonsville, MD is lucky 13 and top master with an excellent Alexandria Turkey Trot 5 Mile, third overall in 25:29.

19 & Under Men
RRCA Challenge 10 Mile 53:24, 10K = 32:08
Seamus O’Reilly of Front Royal, VA added some muscle this year moving up fifteen places to fifth teen. He was the winner of the Long Branch Pre-Hangover 5K in 16:57 to start the year.
Tim Smith of Roanoke, VA was third overall at the Drumstick Dash 5K in 16:03 ahead of fourth place Sean Flynn of Goodview, VA who ran 16:49, as well as seventh ranked Andrew Smith of Roanoke, VA. Flynn had bested Darren Simpson of Crewe, VA at the Star City Half Marathon earlier in the week, 1:17:14 to 1:17:51. Then in February, Simpson moved past Tim Smith to the title with the Virginia is For Lovers 14K in 47:30, followed by the short course Youngblood 5K overall win. Smith cemented his spot with an overall win in 16:25 at the Lewis Gale Jingle Bell Run for Arthritis 5K.
Kurtis Steck of Williamsburg, VA started the period with a Governor's Land 5K in 16:42. Later he would add the Colonial 5K in a slower 17:24, albeit an overall win. Sixth place Ryan Peterson of Richmond, VA was runner-up at the SCAN 5K in 17:01 to close on Seamus O'Reilly of Front Royal, VA. O'Reilly's overall win at the Long Branch Pre-Hangover 5K in 16:57 moved him up 15 places from last winter to fifth this year.

35-39 Men
Jingle All the Way 10K, 31:54
Karsten Brown of Front Royal, VA is a maniac. With more than a 1,000 races run since 2000 when he joined the 50 Plus Club, his motto must be "no excess is too much." Last year he challenged himself with more than 1,300 racing miles and 21 marathon or longer events among his 109 races. Even ultra racer Michael Wardian must be wondering what gives.
Brown rarely travels far like Wardian but he had 19 age group wins. His best race of the period was at the Cold Turkey 10K, a short course that equals a 34:41for a 10K. That gave him fourth place just ahead of Edi Turco of Arlington, VA, who ran the DCRRC JFK 20K finishing second overall in 1:12:46. It was very close, but Brown had ten more races between that and Turco's second race. Scott Anderson of Washington, DC takes the third spot with his SOME Thanksgiving Day Trot for Hunger 5K in 16:08 and the last day in February at the Love the Run You're with 5K in 16:35.
George Probst of Blacksburg, VA is a former open champion. He started the period winning it all at the Star City Half Marathon in 1:13:06 and ended the season second overall at the Blacksburg 10 Mile in 55:45 to take the runner-up spot. Wardian, of Arlington, VA, loves to race. He goes all over the United States to race any distance up to 100K and outside the country to Africa for even longer multi-day events. The marathon seems to be his best race. Already this spring he has won his fourth SunTrust Marathon, not bad considering the race has only been contested five times. Wardian started November with the Arlington Turkey Trot 5K in 15:48 and then won the division with a third overall at the Anheuser-Busch Colonial Half Marathon in 1:08:47 in February.

Alexandria Turkey Trot 5M 25:29, 10K = 32:08
Edmund Burke of Burtonsville, MD had all the power he needed for the winter rankings top spot the first week when he matched Ray Pugsley's 2008 time at the Alexandria Turkey Trot 5M in 25:28, good enough for third overall. He also finished third overall at the Fairfax Four Mile to end the year but conditions made for a slower pace in 20:49. From Westminster, Steve Kartalia trounced everyone at the Burk Memorial 5K in 16:34. Then he finished a few strides behind Doug Mock's only race at the RRCA Challenge 10 Mile in 55:35 to take the runner-up spot.
John Lomogda of Norfolk, VA joined the division as Kartalia was leaving with a spritely Governor's Land 5K in 16:20. Then he capped the week with another third overall, the Tidewater Striders Turkey Trot 10K in 34:24, just missing the open standard. You cannot make the race long enough for Serge Arbona of Baltimore, MD who just gets better as the race gets longer. He improved his RRCA Challenge 10 Mile in February (60:00) with his with B&A Trail Marathon in 2:44:00. Arbona will also be joining Mark Hoon and Bill Bray in the rush to the 45-49 division. Before leaving this age division, Bray of Fairfax, VA ran the Virginia Run Turkey Trot 5K in 16:55. From Virginia Beach, Steve Speirs does quantity and quantity--in 2009 he ran 47 races. This winter Speirs ran a solid Tidewater Striders Tune-up 30K in 1:56:26 to go with a 58:50 at the Cape Henry 10 Mile. This helped him get ready for the March Hat Run 50K, where he finished 10th overall in 4:44:59.

45-49 Men
Turkey Trot 5K 16:39, 10K = 34:44
David Cascio of Reston, VA just missed moving in to the third place in the 45-49 division on the last day of the period with an overall win at the Run for Haiti 5K in 17:11.
The ranking period had just begun and it looked as if both of David Haaga's chief competitors were hot. Tim Schuler of Chambersburg, PA bolted to an excellent Turkey Trot 5K in 16:39. Two hundred miles further southeast Dai Roberts of Virginia Beach, VA hammered home the NSA Turkey Trot 5K in 16:40. Roberts won his only other race in a tame 18:07 and Schuler evaporated into thin air.
That first week was a test for Haaga. Gaithersburg's Paul Jacobson was getting hot and dumped Haaga into the silver spot at the Turkey Burnoff 10 Mile with a time of 59:46 to 60:12. Maybe the wheels were coming off as Haaga ran a staid 29:05 at the MCRRC Jingle Bell Jog 8K in December. Jacobson ramped it up for New Year's with a 17:13 5K and Haaga had some work to do. Hernan Garbini of Waynesboro, VA popped a solid Charlottesville 4 Miler in 22:32 and Haaga's reply was a mere 22:48 at the MCRRC Shooting Starr 4 Mile. Meanwhile, Hernan had rousted Midlothian's Brian Bortelli at the Frostbite 15K, 55:50 to 56:05. Steve Chattin of Columbia, MD snatched the seventh spot at the HCS Atholton 5K in 17:22, just behind Bortell.
Then in February, Haaga came to life at the RRCA Challenge 10 Mile in 58:10 with just enough juice to catch Roberts for the top spot. The final day of the ranking period David Cascio avenged his rain soaked, nighttime, high hill adventure at the Fairfax Four Mile (23:35) with a Run for Haiti 5K overall win in 17:11 to nearly overhaul Jacobson for the third spot.

50-54 Men
Governor's Land 5K 16:45, 10K = 34:56
Greg Cauller of York, PA is the newest grandmaster. Here he is still holding off submaster great Philippe Rolly, finishing the Veterans Day 10K in 35:43. Rolly recovered to finish tops in 34:46.
This battle came down to one of the closest scoring ever--- using the Moreland Racing Factor with Stephen Chantry of Williamsburg, VA and Pete Gibson of Murfreesboro, NC barely helped. Chantry had two races so we used Gibson's fastest two races and Chantry prevailed 20 to 19. Then, we computed Gibson's best two races and he prevailed 22 to 20, and of course, by using all three of his races he easily won with 32.
Chantry started the period with two hot 5Ks, the Governor's Land 5K in 16:45 (age graded above 90%) and the Blue Talon Bistro Turkey Trot 5K in 17:11, Gibson answered back with the VAB Turkey Trot 10K in 34:59 and a few weeks later the Santa Claus Shuffle 5K in 16:50. Chantry turned 55 and headed for the indoor track. Gibson ran the Tidewater Striders Tune-up 20K in 1:16:22.
Meanwhile, Greg Cauller of York, PA was from one representative of six different states. Cauller, like Gibson, races so much in our region that it is really his home turf. Cauller seemed almost timid with his Anheuser-Busch Colonial Half Marathon for third master in 1:21:48. After all, he had already won at Jingle All the Way 10K in 35:43 ahead of fourth place Tom Burke of California, MD (36:44). Last March, as a youngster, he had run 16:39 for the fastest 45-49 5K of 2009. This March, he ran 16:57 at the Tim Kennard 5K River Run to close on the top two.
The next three (all former champions) were almost annoyingly close with all making a good case for catching Burke. Fifth place goes to Dan Lawson of Gaithersburg, MD for two solid races on those meandering and scenic courses, Turkey Burnoff 5 Mile in 29:14 and MCRRC Jingle Bell Jog 8K in 29:24. Jim Bates of Hampton, VA is next with the fastest time of the three at the Governor's Land 5K in 17:39, though Maurice Pointer of Baltimore, MD had two 17:43 5Ks among his seven age group wins. Both of these guys love to race and may have run too many because their times were not as consistent. Bates next best race was the TCRR Championship 7 Mile in 42:46.

55-59 Men
Jingle All the Way 10K 37:32
Alan Pemberton of Silver Spring, MD is the man to beat in the 55-59 division, winning the Veterans Day 10K in 37:32.
Alan Pemberton of Silver Spring, MD looked around and the coast was clear so he threw out his opening bid at the SOME Thanksgiving Day Trot for Hunger 5K in 18:16. Tom Ruckert of Grantsville was still feeling his oats from his new record at the Great Allegany 15K in the fall; thus, his Turkey Trot 5K in 18:19 signaled-the competition is on! Meanwhile, in Williamsburg, Seaford's Jim Thornton was making noises with his Governor's Land 5K in 18:41. In mid-December, Pemberton posted a solid Jingle All the Way 10K in 37:32 to quell the doubts. Thornton added the Grafton Cold Feet 5K in 18:48 to maintain third place.
Tim Morgan of Damascus, MD had a solid beginning at the Turkey Burnoff 10 Mile in 1:06:23 but earned his spot New Year's Day in Gaithersburg, racing the 5K in 18:51. Peter Mueller bookended the period with two nice sub-forty 10Ks to take the fifth spot. Both Gary Grimsley of Springfield, VA and Rick Platt of Williamsburg, VA got off to a slow start in November. Grimsley raced the YMCA Turkey Trot 5K in 19:28 and followed with two races that barely qualified. Former top dog Platt may be gearing up for the next division as his Toys for Tots Holiday 10K in 40:39 was certainly not what we expected, though it was an improvement over his Governor's Land 5K in 19:46. Roland Rust of Bethesda, MD was a tad behind them, racing the Jingle All the Way 10K in 40:46, but he maintained much better, finishing the period at the B&A Trail Half Marathon in 1:31:05.

60-64 Men
MCRRC New Year's 5K 18:15, 10K = 38:04
Jim Wright of Gaithersburg, MD is having his way with the senior division, racing a sparkling 39:33 to win the 60-64 division.
With Bill Taylor absent, the road begins and ends with Jim Wright of Gaithersburg, MD. Wright, who is even lighter than Ronnie Wong, reportedly 112 pounds, flies through the region, earning the top three times. Bill Hart of Virginia Beach, VA laid down his bid with a solid Tidewater Striders Turkey Trot 10K in 40:50, followed by his Santa Claus Shuffle 5K in 19:27. The following day Wright ran a swift Jingle All the Way 10K in 39:33 to end the challenge. New Year's Day brought Hart to the cusp of 19 minutes with his Hair of the Dog 5K in 20:02. Wright answered with a MCRRC New Year's 5K in an awesome 18:15. Still in the Tidewater region, Dale Abrahamson of Yorktown, VA ran an excellent Governor's Land 5K in 20:05 to keep Hart looking over his shoulder.
Jack Gill of Pulaski, VA moves up to fourth with a strong Star City Half Marathon in 1:34:10. Langston Shelton of Grafton, VA stayed close with a fast 5K, while his Anheuser-Busch Colonial Half Marathon in 1:37:13 moves him to fifth place. The next four spots were up for grabs. Wilson Trueheart of Baltimore, MD is next with speed at the Towson YMCA Turkey Trot 5K in 20:33, followed by David Bussiere of Virginia Beach, VA, racing the Crossroads 12K in 52:27. The iconic Jay Wind of Arlington, VA is known for his endurance and finished the DCRRC JFK 20K in 1:30:47. Larry Coley of Chesapeake, VA has a nice Tidewater Striders Turkey Trot 10K in 43:26 in this second biggest division.

DCRRC JFK 20K 1:30:50, 10K = 43:21
Jim Noone of Fairfax, VA has been quietly inching his way to the top. Bill Joyce was away and Jason Page was getting a slow start for the season. Lou Shapiro was out in force with nine age group wins in ten races. Shapiro saved his best for the last day of the period winning the B&A Trail Marathon in 3:24:10. Both of his hilly races, the Turkey Burnoff 10 Mile (1:13:03) and the RRCA Challenge 10 Mile (1:12:50) were faster than Noone's fourth best race at the DCRRC Al Lewis 10 Mile (1:13:26). Of course, that race started with a light snow and had about six inches by the time runners got back across the timing mats. Noone took the division with the fastest 5K, Cranberry Crawl 5K in 20:49 and a sparkling DCRRC JFK 20K in 1:30:50.
Page, of Hamilton, VA, ran a solid 35:10 at his last February 5 miler to take third but look out for spring as his ran the Towne Bank Shamrock Festival 8K in 32:25. Harold Ingram of Henry, VA was next, racing the Drumstick Dash 5K in 21:46, while John Kirkpatrick ran the short course Cold Turkey 6M for an equivalent 46:45 for a 10K.

DCRRC JFK 20K 1:31:47, 10K = 43:49
Ken Quincy of Vienna, VA had a nifty 51:28 at Veterans to help him to the 8th spot in the 70-74 division. In this photo he takes on the summer’s Leesburg 10K race.
Gerry Ives is the top seed with Best of 2009 honors and he has started up the competitive juices, especially now that John Elliott is back on the circuit. And another force in this category, Bernie Gallagher has promised that in September he will be giving these guys something to think about. Ives was still running sub 3:00 marathons in his fifties, Gallagher ran a 2:42 Marine Corps Marathon at age 48. Also, let us not forget last winter champion, Mel Williams, who set the Virginia State records at age 50 in 2:37:22 and at 61 in 2:54:44.
Ives let former champion Chan Robbins of Arlington, VA take it out in November with a couple of solid 5Ks, including the Virginia Run Turkey Trot 5K in 22:34. Fourth place Herb Parsons of Silver Spring, MD took honors at the Cranberry Crawl 10K in 48:29. John Elliott was switching over from cycling and in mid-January still looked like hibernation at the HCS Atholton 5K in 22:45. But he and Chan had been showing up to challenge Ives at the Tidal 3K.
At the Jingle All the Way 10K in December Ives laid down the law with an event record 44:10 ahead of Robbins' 47:03. Then, while Elliott was gearing up, he stoned the competition with his DCRRC JFK 20K in 1:31:47. The final weekend he ran the Van Metre 5 Mile to a 35:23 event record, starting slowly in 7:20 and finishing at a sub-7:00 pace. Still, he was impressed when he heard the next day that Elliott had run a 21:33 at the Tim Kennard 5K River Run to take the runner-up spot.

Sentara 5K 22:59, 10K = 47:57
Mayor Robert Gurtler of the Plains, VA turned seventy-five and suddenly all his races were ranked. Bob is well on the way to his average of 116 races in each of the last four years.
Jerry Lewis of Reston, VA adds another title while last year's overall champion gets moved down to fifth place. Bill Fenwick of Williamsburg, VA made the first move besting sixth place Tom Ray of Kitty Hawk, NC at the Governor's Land 5K, 25:52 to 27:25. Lewis made his move in December winning the Fall into Winter 10K in 53:32. This year George Yannakakis of Sparks, MD did not get his first race of the season until 2010, skipping the Jingle All the Way 10K that had helped win him the title. Lewis returned and unchallenged ran for the top time in 52:17.
Long time Virginia Beach, VA competitor Chris Catoe aged up and dove into the competition taking third with a superb Santa Claus Shuffle 5K in 26:27 to go with his season opener, a 55:35 Tidewater Striders Turkey Trot 10K. Now 79, Jack McMahon of Rockville, MD is still hanging close to the top three. He ran the fastest 5 mile race at Alexandria Turkey Trot 5 Mile in November with 44:34.

Governor's Land 5K 35:48, 10K = 1:14:41
Only four runners came out to play. Robert White of Hampton did not let a little thing such as 86 years get in the way. He bolted to an early lead, winning the Toys for Tots Holiday 5K in 35:08 and sealed the deal with an impressive 34:14 at the Joe Moore Memorial 5K. Last year's runner-up of the year, Ferris Portner Jr. of King George, VA, had the fastest 8K in 1:02:01 to stay ahead of Norvill Jones of Alexandria, VA, who ran the Alexandria Turkey Trot 5 Mile in 1:03:02.
