Welcome to the Washington Running Report
Summer Men 2010
Open Men
Firecracker 5K 14:26, 10K = 30:06
After two solid 5Ks earned him 23rd place Ed Aramayo of Baltimore, MD wins it all at the Run!Geek!Run! 8K to start the fall.
Both Demesse Tefera and Gurmessa Megressa have run many races together and each has earned the title of Open champion. Their 2010 summer competition started in June when Megressa won the Run Through History 10K by a second in 31:52. On Independence Day they met again at the Reston Firecracker 5K. Tefera exploded to win in 14:26, while Megressa had an off-race, finishing in 15:12. A week later Megressa won the Caribbean Sounds 8K in 24:12. The following week Tefera lit it up at the Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K in 24:06 just eight seconds behind winner Abiyot Endale, while Megressa faded to fourth in 24:54. July ended with Tefera edging out Megressa at the Friends of the W&OD 10K, winning a photo finish as both shared a gun time of 31:51.
By Labor Day weekend, it was clear Megressa needed some help to win the title. They both started Kentlands/Lakelands 5K-then Tefera dropped out early in the race. Megerssa was still running for dear life as Joe Wiegner hounded him the whole way only to come up short by a stride in 14:44. Tim Young only had two races, but the two overall wins had just enough juice to push Gurmessa and Wiegner to third and fourth. Young had his way at the Civitan 10K Memorial Weekend with 30:35. Then he posted a 24:41 at the FARC Heritage Festival 5 Mile.
Jon Molz takes the fifth spot with two wins, including an impressive Patrick Henry Half Marathon in 1:08:35. Andrew Dumm was next with a 14:55 at the Crystal City Twilight 5K where he finished fifth overall. Then he handily won it all at the Leesburg 10K in 29:38 (Editor's note: Short course). Seventh place David Wertz had an inspiring 14:52 win at the Soaring Eagle 5K, but laid an egg at Kentlands/Lakelands 5K with a 16:27 finish.
Dave Berdan won big time at the Bel Air Town Run 5K in 14:58 for eighth. Will Christian impressed at the Dodge Rock ‘n' Roll Half Marathon in 1:09:10. Ryan Pauling rounded the top ten just ahead of Ryan Stasioski's Bunker Hill 5.5 Mile with a credible win at the Dundalk Pondskipper 5K in 15:04.
In all, 39 men earned a place in the Elite rankings.

19 & Younger Men
Appalachian Power Festival 10K, 31:59
This large division always shifts around a lot. Brian Horlick had the best race, finishing second overall at the Soaring Eagle 5K in 16:06. Cody Seymour moves up from eighth with a solid 16:16 at the Shawsville 5K in the middle of the season.
Collin Leibold was the overall winner at the Bluemont Park 5K in 16:30. That was not quite enough to edge him past third place Noah Hutton. Hutton was the overall winner at the Dundalk Heritage Independence 6K in 19:54. Eighth place Nick Pasko also ran in the 6K with a time of 20:15.
The three in between spots were decided in a head-to-head-to-head at the Vineyards of Williamsburg 5K. Scott Gemmell-Davis gets fifth with his best race there in 16:29. Stephen Chantry, Jr. is next in 16:34, with Patrick Cunningham arriving a mere second later.

35-39 Men
Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K 25:28, 10K = 32:18
Nine of Edi Turco’s fifteen races were top three finishes, including three overall wins to finish fourth in the sub masters division. The top three racers in the division have a combined 41 age group wins. These guys like to race. While division winner Michael Wardian travels all over the world to race, Karsten Brown has many multiple race weekends including finishing his first 100 miler this year. Both love to extend themselves. Edi Turco stays mostly in Virginia racking up wins.
Brown is having another season notching PRs and race directors are coming to expect him to triumph. Still, none of his PRs match up with the world class running of Wardian. While Brown had a sweet PR at the Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K in 27:16, Wardian was already in the post-race chow line thanks to his 25:28. Wardian was second at the National Press Club 5K in 15:52; Brown was second at the DCRRC Run After the Women 5K in 16:26. By the end of the summer ranking period Brown had an overall win at the Charm City 20 Miler in 1:58:29, but Wardian won the 2009 edition in 1:49:53.
Edi Turco ran a swift time at the Raven Romp race, though the distance was not a full 10K. George Probst was not far behind, running the Commonwealth Games 5K for the win in 16:34. Probst had another overall win in the 5K and a second place in the 10K with 35:55. Turco manages third with a couple overall wins. Eric Estrada is fifth, racing the Bel Air Town Run 5K in 16:49.

40-44 Men
We've Got Your Back 5K 15:41, 10K = 32:43
Remus Medley, of Baltimore, MD does it all, owning the Best of 2010 times for six distances and finishes seventh in the 40-44 division.Ray Pugsley notched a superb 5K in 15:41 and then retired for the season. Another former champion, Doug Mock, took a stab at the division Memorial Day weekend at the Remembrance 5K in 16:54. All three of his races (which he ran by July 4th) were sub-36:00. David Doherty took the long road, ramping up from a 17:21 5K to a Charm City 20 Miler in 2:02:19 to finish the season and take third place.
The crown was up for grabs early as Jordan Snyder bounded up the Capital Crescent 5K in 16:42. Two weeks later, as he was winning the whole ball of wax at Run for the Red 10K in 34:58, Jeff Harrington was scorching the Lynchburg area with his own victory at the Presbyterian Homes 5K in 16:44. Then we hit the midway mark of July and Harrington's overall win at the Percival's Island Five Miler in 27:50 was a hair better than Snyder's Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K masters win in 27:45. The clincher came a month later when Harrington busted a 1:16:27 at the Lynchburg Half Marathon for third overall and the division title.
Kevin White hovered right around 17:00 for a couple of 5Ks to finish fifth. Just behind him is Conrad Orloff, the top dog at the Dodge Rock ‘n' Roll Half Marathon in 1:18:05. Steve Speirs takes the eighth spot following close behind Orloff in that race with his 1:18:28. The lucky seventh spot went to Remus Medley with a swift 17:03 at the Cricket 5K.

45-49 Men
Dodge Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon 1:14:42, 10K = 33:54
John Piggott did not even win his best race, but he likes to start a new division on top. He followed his 27:58 FARC Heritage Festival 5 Mile the next day with an overall win at the Yorktown Independence Day 8K in 27:45. Rob Hovernale improved his 5K from 17:10 to 16:51 to briefly edge Piggott for the fastest race. Piggott had already notched a ten miler and a half marathon in August. So, he moved 40 miles east to Virginia Beach to try on the Dodge Rock ‘n' Roll Half Marathon. It suited him just fine--he finished in 1:15:57 to take the division.
David Haaga is one of three top guys soon to become grandmasters. He made his bones racing the Capital Crescent 5K in 16:56. In September, he took down an age group record from Ted Poulos at the Potomac Valley Games, winning the 10K outright in 35:23. He bested Dave Berardi, 49, at the Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K, 28:19 to 28:24, although neither had a bragging race.
Fourth through sixth are razor close. Dennis Mickey had two fast 5Ks in 17:08 plus a second overall to get the nod for fourth. Chris Chattin and Berardi dueled evenly with each taking two victories from the other. Berardi takes the fifth spot because he won a photo finish in both of their best races, the Arbutus Firecracker 10K in 35:41.
Edward Dickenson is next, racing FAB 5K in 17:13. Jean Christophe Arcaz (who will be turning 50 in January) was the top masters division finisher at the Lawyers Have Heart 10K in 36:10. He just beats the region's most prolific racer, Ted Poulos (who recently completed his 4,000th race).

50-54 Men
Volvo Powertrain 5K 16:34, 10K = 34:33
The fastest qualified grandmaster is Doug Fernandez. He is one of only two runners in this group to break 17 minutes---the other is Dave Shafer, 16:34 at the Volvo Powertrain. Fernandez ran the Pony Pasture 5K in 16:58. He also had the 17th fastest time with the fastest half marathon. Normally, that would be enough, especially when the second best race is Maurice Pointer's Cricket 5K in 17:17.
Pointer, however, has nine of the top ten times plus 16 age group wins. He just keeps pounding out the hits and his last season in the division will have him wearing the crown. He ran major races and only once failed to win his division. His worst effort was a tough 29:58 at the Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K. His top nine times qualify him for the top spot.
Elmer McPhail steps up to the third spot, running the AS Run After the Women 5K in a swift 17:34. He added a second place at Dawson's 10K in 37:13 to edge out Dan Lawson who ran a fast Kentlands/Lakelands 5K in 17:41. Weems McFadden had a slightly faster race at the Stoneleigh Stampede Run 5K in 17:44 than former champion Mark Malander had when winning the Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K in 29:14.

55-59 Men
Queen's Lake 5K 17:06, 10K = 35:40
For now this is the easiest division to rank. Come fall, we will be adding Dave Shafer, who ran a 16:34 in late August, and Maurice Pointer and Dan Lawson, both former division champions. For summer 2010 Stephen Chantry had the five top races with four 5K wins in his hometown of Williamsburg. Runner-up Tom Ruckert had seven age group wins, including the next five fastest times. His best effort was the Strides for Health & Fitness 5K in 18:19 with three other sub-19:00 5Ks.
Roland Rust climbs up to the third spot. His Autism 5K in 18:48 is as good as his best race in the spring, the PR maker Pike's Peek 10K. He also ran 19:01 back in May to help set the tone for when he met up with his main competitor, Tim Morgan, at the Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K. He won that July evening in 31:58 to 32:23 to clinch the deal. Peter Mueller had an even faster time at the Yorktown Independence Day 8K in 31:30 to take the fourth spot.
The final weekend, Morgan, who is always smiling, knew he needed a win as Richard Adams had finished not far behind Rust in both of his 5Ks and well ahead of Morgan's 8K. At the Kentlands/Lakelands 5K, the age group was ten-year but both of these runners ignored young 54-year-old Dan Lawson and concentrated on getting that fifth spot in the division. Morgan had his season's best in 19:11 to cruise in 12 seconds ahead of Adams.

His fine race at the Kentlands-Lakelands 5K (earning a top 30 placement) has Allen Vaughan gearing up for his next division, 60-64.

60-64 Men
Lawyers Have Heart 10K, 38:01
Jim Wright used the same plan he did to win last summer: run the seven fastest races. He started the ranking period with two sub-6:00 pace 5Ks. In June, he chopped one second off his 2009 Lawyers Have Heart 10K and ran 38:01. That was five minutes ahead of Eric Melby's second place finish. Fourth place Ronnie Wong had the next fastest at the Arbutus Firecracker 10K in 42:14. Melby was again second to Wright by five minutes at the Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K. He slowed somewhat in September at the Kentlands/Lakelands 5K in 19:10, perhaps because he had run the fastest half of the year the week before at Patrick Henry in 1:25:10.
Dale Abrahamson stayed close to Rick Platt at Queens Lake, 20:05 to 19:54, as Platt finished his last race in the 55-59 division. After a couple of false starts in August that left him still behind Abrahamson's best race, he powered from fifth to second by winning at the Dodge Rock ‘n' Roll Half Marathon in 1:30:53.
Doc Weiss uncorked a fine Shawsville 5K in 19:44 to knock Abrahamson down another place. Then Ronnie Wong had 12 of his 19 races faster than Abrahamson's second best race, sending him back to fifth place. Wong was more concerned about that pesky Wilson Trueheart who keeps following him closely to the finish line. Trueheart has yet to catch him, despite both running their fastest race at Pikesville (20:07 and 20:21) and then two weeks later at the Cricket 5K, the margin between them was just four seconds.

DCRRC Run After the Women 5K 19:16, 10K = 40:11
Jason Page, 65, of Hamilton, VA put a whooping on his division, finishing third overall at the Run for Door 5K.Jason Page has a hammerlock on the division with nine age group wins in ten races. His top eight races are faster than anyone else's best race. In fact, all eight would qualify him for the 50-54 division. He ran four 4-milers for the DCRRC with a top speed of 25:45. Page was also the overall winner in an age-handicapped race that included one of the fastest American masters runners of all time, John Tuttle.
Second place Jim Noone had seven age group wins, but in a head-to-head race with Page he finished about a minute behind him. Noone ran his best 4-miler at the DCRRC Hugh Jascourt in 26:38. If he had run that time at the handicap race, he would have upset Tuttle as well instead of finishing third. Ed Lecates used quantity to break the tie with another Pennsylvania import, Jim Becker. Lecates had a top speed of 20:46 at the Boordy Vineyard 5K, while Becker was close behind in 20:48 at the Volvo Powertrain 5K. Lou Shapiro is still belting out age group wins, finishing fifth with his Beth Walton 5K in 21:16.

Bernie Gallagher is now seventy and itching to take on the competition.

70-74 Men
Kentlands/Lakelands 5K 21:44, 10K = 45:20
This division is tough. Last summer's champion Duane Lougee went all the way back to tenth place. All of the top five men have been former champions. John Elliott was not pleased when he came to DC for the Tidal Basin run and Gerry Ives acted as his advance scout, with Chan Robbins pushing hard behind him. In August, Elliot touched base with a couple of odd distance races that really did not give him true feedback. Labor Day weekend he pounced twice and took the division with the four fastest races--Kentlands/Lakelands 5K in 21:44 was a fairly fast course followed by the Labor Day Rogue 5K in 22:08.
Skip Mullaney takes the runner-up spot with a couple of nice 5Ks, including the Kiwanis Club Independence Day 5K in 22:22. Look out for fall, because he already dropped the top 10K time by more than four minutes. Bernie Gallagher recently turned 70 and will be gunning for third place Gerry Ives, but he will be happy to take on all comers. His last race before aging up was a 1:13:34 at the Bottle & Cork 10 Miler.
Ives is off his game for now, racing his best effort the second week of August at the Summer Strides 5K in 23:01. The most prolific racer in the division, Chan Robbins, won 11 times with his best effort at the Reston Firecracker 5K in 23:19. Mel Williams prefers the longer races but he sported the summer season's fastest 10K in 49:16 at Elizabeth River to take the fifth spot in the division.

Cricket 5K 25:16, 10K = 52:42
Former champion Jerry Lewis has retired and Jack McMahon and Larry Dickerson are just about to turn 80. Somebody needs to step up and challenge George Yannakakis. Not to worry, the Tidewater region sent four men up to do battle. Yannakakis had the top four times plus five of the top 11, but Bill Fenwick of Williamsburg has the other six times as his best competition. Both had two 5Ks faster than 26:00. Yannakakis wins the division with the Cricket 5K in 25:16. Fenwick's First Colony Run for Shelter 5K in 25:36 is not far behind.
Chris Catoe takes third with the fastest 10K of the ranking period at the Elizabeth River Run in 55:35, although Yannakakis gets an asterisk for his 51:24 at the Leesburg 10K. Tom Ray has been crossing the border from Kitty Hawk, NC for many years to participate in our local races. He ran the Yorktown Independence Day 8K in 43:57 to keep it close with Catoe.
Here is someone who just "plain" out loves to race. Bob Gurtler from The Plains, VA had already run his 50th 5K of the year as the summer season ended and he is well on pace for his fifth straight year of 110 races.
Editor's note: Leesburg 10K was a short course.

80 & Older Men
Appalachian Power Festival 5K 27:41, 10K = 57:45
Nianxiang Xie, 83, of Rockville, MD thrilled the hometown crowd at the Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K in 50:20 for the runner-up spot in the most senior division.
Runners in their 80s slow down faster. John Hosner must have figured he would cap the division again in May. His 27:41 at age 85 is mighty impressive.
Nianxiang Xie has quite a following in Montgomery County. He picks carefully among the major races. At the Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K he boasted the top 8K of the 80 plus set to secure the second spot. Later in August, Hosner ran the Salem 5K in 29:09 and heads turned as Xie acquired the second fastest 5K at the Kentlands/Lakelands 5K with 28:31. Joe Rutkowski entered the fray with Dundalk 6K in 39:10 to take third.
