Last year’s top three are seen at all the major races: Demesse Tefera, Gurmessa Megressa, and Abiyot Endale. Naturally, nearly every fast time came at a competitive major race. Ryan Carroll got things underway at the Cape Henry 10 Miler in 50:13. He had 31 overall wins and took the winter period. It also moved him up to sixth from last year’s 20th place ranking.

In the spring, Abiyot Endale made it clear he was going places. He finished fourth overall at the tough TowneBank Shamrock Festival 8K in 23:17. The next day he was second overall at the Yuengling Shamrock Festival Half Marathon in 1:05:43. Dave Berdan takes the fifth spot in the division following him home in his second race with 1:06:16.

Then came the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile where Tim Young finished 18th overall in a speedy 49:04 to make his move. At the end of April Endale came back to the highly competitive Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K. He was ninth overall in 29:14 to retake the top spot from runner-up Young.

Megressa followed him down the pike in 29:55, which was good enough (along with his 11 age groups wins) to take fourth place. He was ahead of Dave Berdan who finished soon after in 30:22. Michael Wardian takes seventh place by winning his fourth National Marathon in a sensational 2:21:47.

Tefera was hanging around the top five with an overall win at the Reston Firecracker 5K in 14:26. His next race would settle him for 3rd, 4th, or 5th place. Then, in the fall, we had the opportunity to find out whether the old Sallie Mae course was as fast as the Pike’s Peek course. Traditionally, West Potomac Park had the fastest times but not the depth. Endale coolly took down the event record at the Veterans Day 10K in 29:35 to put a stamp on his crown. Demesse Tefera rallied to third in the race with 30:03 to catch Megressa, who ran 30:12, moving him to fourth and capturing the bronze. Berdan had a third race, winning the Kelly’s Shamrock 5K in 14:29 to fall just short.

Filling out the top ten is Dirk De Heer who won the Van Metre 5 Mile in 24:18 and added a fifth at the National Half Marathon in 1:07:37--good enough to take seventh place. Aaron Church came in right behind him with an excellent Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in 50:52. Both ran the St. Patrick’s Day 8K, with De Heer leading 24:36 to 25:07. Guy Alton takes tenth at the HCA 8K, finishing second in his age group with 24:10.

Ryan Carroll, 28, of Portsmouth, VA is a prolific racer winning 32 of 37 races. When he played with the other big dogs at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon, he produced a fine 1:15:16. That was his slowest race. His best race was the Cape Henry 10M victory in 50:13 to take the sixth spot in the top division.

Darren Simpson, 19, of Crewe, VA, moved up from the runner-up spot last year to take the division title. He was the top teenager at a unique distance race, Virginia is for Lovers 14K, in 47:40. Just before aging up into the open division, he won it all at the Ashland Railroad 10K in 33:57.

The runner-up spot was very close between Kurtis Steck, 15, of Williamsburg, VA, and Cody Seymour, 16, of Bent Mountain, VA. Both had four age group wins, Steck had the fastest time by a shadow at the Run for the Dog 5K in 16:13. Seymour fired a fine Fourth of July Shawsville 5K in 16:16. They had identical second races. Steck slowed some in his next two races, though winning the Colonial 5K overall in 17:24. Seymour maintained pace and his 27:21 at the TowneBank Shamrock Festival 8K put him over the top.

The next two runners came from Williamsburg as well. Patrick Cunningham had three overall wins and split 5Ks with Scott Gemell-Davis in May. Cunningham added a second 5K win and a thumping at the Icelandic Seafood Fest 8K in June, 28:45 to 30:18. Gemell-Davis responded with a big victory at the Vineyards of Williamsburg 5K, 16:29 to 16:35, to turn the tide.

There still isn’t a chink in the armor of Michael Wardian. For sure, his 14th best race, the Lawyers Have Heart 10K in 33:18, was slightly slower than runner-up George Probst’s Star City Half Marathon overall win in 1:13:06. Wardian just missed his marathon PR, winning the National Marathon for the fourth time in 2:21:58. He was third overall at the less-than-flat Anheuser Busch Colonial Half Marathon in 1:08:41.

Wardian loves to race and is a two-time ultra marathoner of the year. Fourth place Karsten Brown notes that long mileage and lots of racing can mean mega improvement. Brown finished his first 100 mile race this year and ran the marathon distance or longer 16 times. In this Wardian-world, he espouses he won 61 of his 99 races with a breakthrough marathon in 2:38:36 and a sizzling Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in 55:26. Wardian ran the Army 10-Miler in 51:48.

Third place Scott Anderson took a shot at Wardian’s weakest race distance: the 5K. His Clarendon Day 5K in 15:58 was within shouting distance of Wardian’s Arlington Turkey Trot 5K in 15:48. Fifth place Jeff Harrington’s 33:39 at Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10K was a prelude to him winning the 40-44 division in the summer.

Top master Edmund Burke, 41, of Burtonsville, MD was third overall at the Leesburg 10K. His superb 25:29 at the Alexandria Turkey Trot 5M to start the racing year earns him 25th in the open division plus the top runner from any other age group.

Edmund Burke started his masters career on a high note, winning the winter rankings period with the Alexandria Turkey Trot 5 Mile in 25:29. Steve Kartalia ran a spiffy National Half Marathon in 1:13:22 in the spring. John Lomogda was testing his new wings at the TowneBank Shamrock Festival 8K in 26:18. Andrew Duncan was second in the spring with a fast 15:57 5K. Burke could handle all that, but what was Ray Pugsley going to do?

Pugsley tore up the spring, matching his Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile from 2009 with a fantastic 52:10. Then, he set his masters 10K PR with a win at the Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K in 31:47. The summer started early with Pugsley winning the We’ve Got Your Back 5K in 15:41. Then he was gone, just one race short of the title.

Did Burke spend the first eight months of 2010 in hiding? When he popped back on the roads in September it was a satisfying 5K win in Clarendon with 15:39. He marched on to Army 10-Miler and had an excellent 53:35. Although he was bested by the Fall ranking period winner Sergey Kaledin with 52:51, he would have already known that Kaledin had not qualified and the division was his.

Kartalia held the runner-up spot with his RRCA Challenge 10 Mile in 55:35. Lomogda added a Governor's Land 5K in 16:20 to his 8K to take third place. Andes Wright outdueled Peter Keating at the Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K, 33:55 to 34:02, to take fourth place. Steve Peterson was sixth, racing the Run to Register 10K in 34:30.

In a tale of two halves of a year, John Piggott aged up in the summer. By then David Haaga had sewn up the division with an outstanding Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in 55:50. Piggott’s only loss was a second place Virginia Beach Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon in 1:15:57--which nearly matched Haaga’s Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K in 34:16, and bested third place Chris Chattin in 34:38, fourth place David Cascio in 34:54, and fifth place Bill Bray in 35:09. Jean Christophe Arcaz was there racing in 35:50, but came storming back in the fall to win at the Veterans Day 10K in 34:56 and take the fifth spot. Bray had beaten him at Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile, 58:59 to 59:49.

Using their top five races, Haaga prevails to return as champion with a Moreland Racing Factor (MRF) of 83 to 69, and it should be noted much of that comes from the 33 ranked runners that Haaga topped. In September Piggott launched a top effort at the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Half Marathon in 1:15:20. Then, the first weekend in October, he was top master at the Capitol 10 Miler in 56:42. The next day he traveled to Gainesville to set the standard at the Heritage Half Marathon in 1:14:55. Imagine what he would accomplish with just one race per weekend!

Ted Poulos led all 32 qualifiers with 53 age group wins.

Henry Wigglesworth was too economical. Last year he won the division with just four races. This year he ran all his races in the fall and while he had the quality--beating the new champion Dave Shafer head to head at the Race for World Peace 5K in 16:38--he did not qualify.

Shafer, also a minimalist, ran five races. He seemed hidden in the spring with a mild, albeit overall win at the On the Road for Fitness 5K in 17:25. In the fall, his 16:53 at the Race for World Peace 5K was good enough for third. Though all of the top runners were given solid and close Moreland Racing Factor (MRF) numbers for their top four races, Shafer earned a MFR 50 with his Volvo Powertrain 5K in 16:34 on sheer speed.

After that, the best races by all the runners are too close to call. Mark Malander’s MRF 73 reprised his Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K with another 35:03, narrowly putting away third place Jim Hage (MRF 51) in 35:07 and fourth place Greg Cauller (MFR 50) in 35:21. Malander also knocked out eighth place Maurice Pointer at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile, 58:30 to 59:28.

Elmer McPhail, with a MRF of 62, inserted himself into the fifth spot by finishing in the top three overall in most of his races, including a second overall at the Down’s Park 5 Mile in 27:50.

Pete Gibson had a slight edge, despite a virtual toss-up with Stephen Chantry in the winter. Gibson had the Tidewater Striders Turkey Trot 10K in 34:59 and Chantry was the second fastest qualifier at the Governor's Land 5K in 16:45. We grabbed two of Chantry’s 55-59 races from the spring and he moved to a MRF of 55 to take the sixth spot. Gibson’s MRF of 39 lost to Cauller at the TowneBank Shamrock Festival 8K, 28:00 to 28:07.

Alan Pemberton started the year winning the division in West Potomac Park at the Jingle all the Way 10K in 37:32. That was the last that we heard of him. Roland Rust finished up the year at that same course, running the Veterans Day 10K in 37:31. It earned him third place and he edged past Tom Ruckert who had his best race at the Turkey Trot 5K in 18:19 to start a slew of sub-19:00 5Ks. Rust had a best at the Race for World Peace 5K in 18:23.

The battle for the top spot was going to be between just two runners: Stephen Chantry and Maurice Pointer. Chantry has an unlimited range, but he excels in the middle distance. Both runners spend a lot of time at track meets where Chantry has the upper hand and for half of the year, he also had the extra year necessary to enter the 55-59 club. He was second overall at the Yorktown Victory Run 8 Miler in 47:01. Pointer was biding his time racking up 27 wins in 30 races waiting for his September birthday. His Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in 59:28 would have made an interesting discussion.

In the summer Chantry posted excellent times at two swift 5Ks, the Queen's Lake 5K in 17:06 and the First Colony Run for Shelter 5K in 17:08 (not quite the sub-17:00 he was hoping for). Come September--and just as soon as they started singing Happy Birthday-- Pointer bolted out of the gate with two overall wins, including the Shawan Downs Run with the Horses 10K in 35:39. He finished the fall triumphantly with the best race of the period, second overall at the Caribbean Sounds 10 Mile in 58:48.

So powerful were Chantry’s 5K races that we matched the two runners’ top 11 races. The Moreland Racing Factor (MRF) gave 124 points to Chantry and a 164-point division title went to Pointer.

Tim Morgan, 60, of Damascus, MD turned sixty at the end of the year and is a leading contender in the new division.  In 2010 his race at Leesburg helped him to earn the sixth spot in the 55-59 division.

Jim Wright dominated the first three quarters of 2010. He bolted to the top on the first day of the year with an 18:15 5K. He was the only runner with a race equivalent faster than a 39:00 10K and he did that eight times. In the spring, he raced the Pike in 37:49 and controlled litigation for the summer at the Lawyers Have Heart 10K in 38:01.

For most of the year his closest challenger was Bill Hart whose best race was the Santa Claus Shuffle 5K in 19:27, the 17th fastest race of the year. [CAN YOU DOUBLE CHECK THIS?] In the fall Rick Platt turned the corner and headed down “Just Turned 60 Street.” He promptly shifted into high gear and ran his best races of the year, winning all 12 races, including the Blue Moon Wicked 10K in 39:17. The week after that race he put away discussion for the runner-up spot, giving Bill Hart his only defeat of the year at the Yorktown Battlefield 10 Miler, 1:07:17 to 1:07:41.

Another Tidewater-region titan, Dale Abrahamson of Yorktown, VA, made his presence felt wining the Yorktown Victory Run 8 Miler in 54:14, earning fourth place. He finished his hometown 10 miler in third with 1:09:25. Fifth place Ronnie Wong finished first in 42 of his 44 qualifiers, only Cherry Blossom and Marine Corps Marathon victories eluded him this time. His best race was probably the Annapolis 10 Mile in 1:09:49. With 50 runners who qualified in this division, it is hard to keep track of all the competition. Still, Wong had his eye out for Wilson Trueheart who had been blazing a path through Baltimore winning 18 of 25 races, including a Port to Fort 6K in 24:26. Wong pushed extra hard on the two occasions they met, winning both 5Ks in close contests.

The guys in this division love to race. The top four runners earned a combined 97 age group wins out of their 110 races. Last year’s top four runners included three of them and champion Bill Joyce in winning 75 times. Joyce is still on the mend.

In his place, Jason Page sprinted to the top winning 22 of 23 times in his division and taking third ranking period honors. His only loss was his third fastest race, We’ve Got Your Back 5K in 19:24. Ahead of him in the ten year age group was 60-64 champion Jim Wight. Page had the 17 fastest times in his division. He has been credited with the Virginia state record at 19:53---his eighth fastest 5K in Virginia in 2010.

Page started slow during the winter and Jim Noone motivated down the road at the DCRRC JFK 20K in 1:30:50 to take the winter ranking period. His best race came later in the year at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in 1:09:34. That was enough to place him ahead of soon-to-be-70 Lou Shapiro, who ran 1:10:43. Noone made sure of his place with the division’s second fastest 10K at Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K in 42:18 with Shapiro trailing home in 43:18.

Fourth place Jim Becker owns the west, winning all but one of his 17 races. He looked best at the Run for Life 5K in 20:32. Ed Lecates, another Pennsylvania racer, is next with his Boordy Vineyard 5K in 20:46.

The top two runners in this division split the year. Gerry Ives stormed through the winter racing a terrific event record at the Jingle All the Way 10K in 44:10. In the fall, John Elliott took on Ives and the same course at the Veterans Day 10K where he set the event record in 44:06 and Ives struggled through a 46:03.

In the spring, Ives powered his way to an exceptional 1:11:31 win at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile (a race where he had run many national class times in the last 25 years) and then added the DCRRC 20K in 1:31:47 and the division is his--for now. Elliott took the summer ranking period with a nifty Kentlands/Lakelands 5K In 21:44.

In September, Bernie Gallagher had his lone race in the division and proudly set Ives down, 21:42 to 21:56. He had a fall at the DCRRC Al Lewis 10 Mile this January, so it may be till spring when he really makes his presence felt. Next in line is Skip Mullaney from Charlottesville, VA who is always close enough to pick up the pieces should these guys falter. He ran a best time at the Pepsi 10K in 44:57.

No rankings are complete without mentioning Chan Robbins who won his division 27 times in his 34 qualifiers. He is also a mainstay at the monthly 3K races held at the Tidal Basin.

Chris Catoe had the fastest 10 at the Race for Literacy 10 Mile in 1:27:39 to take fourth. Jack McMahon, who raced 55:10 at the Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K and snared 18 age group wins, finished in fifth. He will be the top seed for the 80-84 division in 2011. The amazing Bob Gurtler won his division 37 times out of 79 qualified times.

Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K, 56:01

Two of the ranking periods were captured by runners who were 85 and older. John Hosner traditionally has held the fastest time but did not run enough to qualify. Last year’s champion, Nianxiang Xie, is now 83 and remarkably knocked three and a half minutes off his Kaiser Permanente Pike's Peek 10K time of last year. He finished in an astonishing 56:01. He had the top six times, winning by more than a mile.

Robert White, 87, of Hampton, VA, had four solid 5Ks ahead of every other runner in the division to capture the runner-up spot. Next year a new class, that will include Jack McMahon, will tighten up the competition.
