Welcome to the Washington Running Report
Summer Men 2011
Open Men
Kentlands/Lakelands 5K 14:17, 10K = 29:48
Ricky Flynn at the Wilson Bridge HM where he improved his time by four minutes over his summer’s best that earned him sixth in the division.
For this ranking period ten races had 50 or more ranked runners. The Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K had 50 more than any other race. When Abiyot Endale made it look easy racing to a near-event-record 23:47, the division was all but his already.
Birhanualem Feysa had won it all at the Damien's Run for Recovery 5K in 14:37 for the third fastest time in the season. That gave him the edge even though he finished third behind Ricky Flynn at the Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K 24:25 to 24:21.
Third place Andrew Dumm won the Georgetown Running Company Father's Day 8K in 24:58, nearly a minute ahead of the runner-up, but he earned the spot Memorial Day weekend winning the Save the Trail 5K in 14:39. Tariku Bokan was fourth at the Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K in 24:36, but he wrenched away the fourth position from Flynn because back in June he was second at the Virginia Wine Country Half Marathon in 1:07:33 ahead of Flynn’s 1:08:16.
Mouchine Outaleb only had one top 25 time, winning the Bel Air Town Run 5K in 30:50, but he also won all six of the races he ran, earning the fifth position. That counts for a lot. Seventh place Dave Berdan had a slightly faster race, winning the Survivor Harbor 7 Mile in 35:05 but stays behind Flynn, just as he did at the Twilight 8K by two seconds in 24:38.
Birhanu Alemu won the Alexandria Running Festival Half Marathon in 1:08:29 to take the eighth pole, and added the Reston Firecracker 5K to his wins in 14:59. The next three runners were virtually tied so secondary races determined their spots. Joey Wiegner was third at the Kentlands/Lakelands 5K in 15:00 for ninth place. Michael Tarpey was second at the Appalachian Power Festival 10K in 31:16 for tenth and Ryan Deak is next, winning it all at the Soaring Eagles 5K in 15:01.
The division ballooned to 54 men in the Elite rankings with five coming from other divisions.

Caribbean Sounds 5K 15:41, 10K = 32:43
Patrick Spahn won his division at the Leesburg 10K in 35:47 for a top 20 time. But he had already established the time to beat at the Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K in 26:49. No one got there. Richard Pineda ran all six of his races on cross country courses where the distances are harder to judge. Still, it is hard to argue with three overall wins and two runner-up spots. His best race was at Southern High School in 16:33.
Axel Tarnvik had the fourth and six fastest races. He finished the Run with Dad 5K in 16:55 for second overall. The following week he bested everyone with an even better 16:41 at the Ringing in Hope 5K. Third place Ryan Hart broke up a virtual tie with his runner-up spot at the Chris Carter Memorial Twilight 5K in 16:37. The next month he added a major race, the Reston Firecracker 5K age group win in 17:06.
The next five runners could be scrambled in nearly any order. Fifth goes to Zach Weinstein for his 16:55 at the Autism Speaks 5K.

Lawyers Have Heart 5K 15:16, 10K = 31:51
Michael Wardian is known for his long races and, for sure, his Leesburg 20K in 1:08:10 for third overall was a solid effort. Still, all through the ‘J’ months of summer he worked on the short races with an 8K and a trio of 5Ks. He just missed his quest to get under 15:00 again in the 5K, running the Lawyers Have Heart 5K in 15:16 to take the division.
Edi Turco finishes strong in 26:51 at the Run! Geek! Run 8K in 26:51. The following weekend he was the overall winner in a 10K and an 8K.
Aaron Church carved out his spot with overall wins, including a hotly contested PRR Twilight Festival 4 Miler in 20:25 as well as a runner-up spot at the Let Freedom Run 5K in 15:57. Karsten Brown continues to pound the pavement going 19 for 21 with at least an age group win. That is a slightly better percentage than Edi Turco’s 20 for 23.
Before we get to them, Rachid Airbensalem stepped up to the plate, racing the Bel Air Town Run 5K in 15:48 to close on Church. That was just weeks after his overall triumph at the Making Tracks for Celiacs 10K in 33:29. Brown thought that perhaps the Front Royal Kiwanis 5K was a tad short, but his 16:05 overall win was plenty enough to go with another overall win at the AS Run After the Women 5K in 16:22 to take fourth place in the division.
Turco won it all at the Baltimore Grand Prix 5K in 15:33 with a recalculated distance that equates to a 10K equivalent of 34:09. He gets passed by David O’Hara whose best effort beat him at the Atoms 5K, 16:24 to 16:41. They also met for O’Hara’s second best race, the Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K in 27:06, ahead of Turco’s fifth best there in 27:51.

Lawyers Have Heart 5K 16:02, 10K = 33:27
Jeff Harrington won this division last summer. This spring he stepped aside for Edmund Burke. To start the summer they met down in Williamsburg at the Run for the Dream 8K. Burke led the way, 26:31 to 27:34. In June it was already too hot to run a 10K, so Lawyers Have Heart became a 5K and Burke won the division with a swift 16:02.
Later in June, Doug Mock raced the Father's Day 8K to inch ahead of Harrington with his 27:32 finish. Harrington responded with the Percival’s Island Five Miler in 27:14, third overall. Then, for further clarification, he added the Educ8-K in 27:26 to take second place. Mock cemented the third spot by his second win ahead of Mike Colaiacovo at the Arbutus Firecracker 10K, 35:18 to 35:31. Colaiacovo ran the Father's Day 8K in Elkridge in 27:41 and earned fourth place in this division.
Fifth place Tony Herndon is a new face out of Charlottesville. He ran their Father's Day 4 Miler in 22:12. Andres Hillar had been the overall winner at the Springfield 5K in 17:15 just two weeks after his best race at the Annandale Atoms 5K in 17:04. He needed that win to stay ahead of Ignacio Moore who also ran a 17:59 at the Shawsville 5K.

45-49 Men
Vince Tantillo/Jack Barr Memorial 5K 16:32, 10K = 34:29
Tim Schuler returned to the WRR Runner Rankings with a vengeance. He opened the bidding on opening day with a powerful Run for the Dream 8K in 27:40. The very next day spring champion John Piggott mounted his favorite ride, the half marathon, to get into the thick of it. His Run for a Dream race in 1:17:35 was just off the pace. Schuler waited two weeks then took a Run Through History 10K for second overall in 35:07. He won the same day 5K as well in 17:09. Piggott capped his season running the Dodge Rock ‘n’ Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon in 1:16:34 to close in on, but not capture the title.
Greg Dawson is tenth in the 45-49 division with his best effort at the Icelandic Seafood Fest 8K in 28:27.
Former champion, now grandmaster, David Haaga finished competing in his 40s with a solid Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K in 28:14, good enough for seventh place in the division. Schuler romped there in 27:38. Spring runner-up Peter Keating roughs up the division at the Father’s Day 8K in Elkridge with 27:48 to take the third spot.
Last summer’s runner-up Rob Hovermale has a solid Vince Tantillo/Jack Barr Memorial 5K in 17:10 to take third at the race where Schuler earned the crown in 16:32. Mark Neff was hovering nearby with a swift Kentlands/Lakelands 5K in 16:57--that overcomes a 28:25 loss to Haaga at the Twilight 8K. Charles Powell comes out of nowhere and his 35:38 Too Hot to Trot 10K results bolt him into sixth place. Eighth place Derik Thomas had an identical 28:25, a place behind, but his Leesburg 20K in 1:14:54 does not have enough oomph to catch Haaga.

Race for the Cure 5K 17:06, 10K = 35:40
Every issue I try to make a really dumb mistake. This issue I chose Henry Wigglesworth to pick on. Wigglesworth is always among the favorites to take the crown. He began the period with an overall win at the DC Capital Striders 5K. The time (18:55) was slow enough to make one think that the course was long. He got in a second qualifying race at the biggest event in the area, the Komen Global Race for the Cure 5K In 17:06. That was the fastest race by four seconds for the whole summer. Somehow his time was missed among the 112,000 recorded times. Still, I was at the race and I did see and talk to him that morning. He should have been included in our print issue. That missed race was enough to put him rightfully back on the map. He quickly ascended past all but two of the qualifiers to take third place for the period. Both Berardi and Fernandez with top 5K races in 17:10 added too much in their other races to give way for the summer.
Look out in the fall as Wigglesworth has already raced 16:40 and with only two weeks remaining in the fall, neither of the other two has come up with an adequate response…yet.
Even with six men defecting to the senior 50s division, the 50-54 men’s division grew to 46 strong, one of the largest divisions. Of the top 20 times, six men made the grade with the top three being razor’s edge close. Patrick Bateman started with an overall win in June at 17:59. On July 4, he made his plea with an excellent Shawsville 5K in 17:12 and with three races, he earned third place.
After earning 25th in his division with six 5Ks, Peter Cini, 53, wins his age group at the Run! Geek! Run! 8K to start the fall.
On to the top dogs--both Doug Fernandez and Dave Berardi ran 17:10. Berardi ran at Damien's Run for Recovery 5K; Fernandez was fifth overall at the Pony Pasture 5K. Last summer Fernandez had the second fastest qualifier and settled for runner-up when quantity trumped quality. This year both racers had lots of both. Berardi had eight races, Fernandez five. Matching the two with the Moreland Racing Factor, Fernandez earns the title with a super close MRF 47-45 rating.
Berardi had started the season with an excellent Run to Dream 8K in 28:21 and his 17:17 race at Goucher College (BRRC Track 5K) was the eighth best time in the division. Fernandez was fourth overall at the Moonlight 4 Mile in 22:31. Then he tied off the summer as top master at the Patrick Henry Half Marathon in 1:19:26.
Dai Roberts, making his first trip as a grandmaster, has the top three looking over their shoulders. He topped the charts at the Icelandic Seafood Fest 8K in 28:25. Coming off a great spring racing season, Jean-Christophe Arcaz stays right behind with his Germantown 5-Miler in 29:09. Sixth place Terry McLaughlin runs the shorter races (1 mile to 3K) more often than not. In June he added the SPCA Run for Shelter 5K in 17:29 to earn his place. H.T. Page raced right behind him, running the Four on the Fourth 4 Mile in 23:32.

Too Hot to Trot 10K 35:49
This division is always in a state of turmoil. Two new players joined this group making the top five with 18 sub-37:00 equivalents. Pete Gibson entered the division to race the competitive Run for the Dream 8K in 28:39. Stephen Chantry delayed his gratification by squeezing in ahead of him at 28:36. The following couple of weeks Maurice Pointer had an overall win and a second overall in the 5K, in 17:30.
Then, in June, Chuck Moeser entered his last bid for the division at the Lawyers Have Heart 5K in 17:31. (Note: he turned 60 in late September!) In mid-June Elmer McPhail aged up to win at the Dawson’s Day 10K in 36:37. That earned him fifth right behind Moeser.
In mid-July Gibson moved past Chantry running the TS Memorial Scholarship 5K in 17:18. Chantry ran three 5Ks in a near boiling August but none was up to expectations, including the best second overall Recovery Rocks in 17:54. Gibson eschewed August to get ready for a monster Dodge Rock ‘n’ Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon in 1:19:39 but that would not be enough to hold the crown. The Pointer racing machine added a third overall to his 11 age groups wins and wrenched the division crown away with his Too Hot to Trot 10K in 35:49.

Lawyers Have Heart 5K 18:53, 10K = 39:23
Spring champion Tim Morgan started the ranking period with a solid Germantown 5-Miler in 32:26 and a Capital Crescent 5K in 19:26. He was hoping to keep last summer’s champion, Jim Wright, at bay. The next week Wright bolted to the top racing the Lawyers Have Heart 5K in 18:53. The showdown was going to be at the Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K in July.
Morgan suffered from a bout of Lyme disease and should be proud he finished as fast as 34:23. Wright has always had a fast time there and waltzed to the winner’s circle with an excellent 31:17. By September Morgan was getting back on track and finished the Kentlands/Lakelands 5K in 19:38. That was one second faster than Malcolm Senior’s second best race at the Bel Air Town Run 5K. Senior narrowly slices his way to the runner-up spot with his Too Hot to Trot 10K in 40:29.
Richard Adams, Jr. took the second spot at the Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K in 32:50. He gains the fourth place in the division with a fine 19:56 at the Let Freedom Run 5K. Fifth place Dan Eddy had the best finishing place in the division, taking third overall in both of his races. His best race was the summer version of Ringing in Hope 5K which he raced in 19:59.

Run for Justice 10K, 42:37
Mary Smith, who won the Run for the Door 5K in mid September, said her dad Jason Page is kicking the stall, he wants so badly to get back out and corral his division. None of the 26 runners who qualified this summer seem to mind his absence. [Kathy, James should include why Jason Page isn’t running, is he injured?]
Long time 50 Plus Club member Jim Noone, 67 earns 14 age wins to win the division title.
Only four racers had a time in the top 20. Jim Noone shellacked the division with 14 of those times, including the top four times. Kenneth Mitchell of Williamsburg had the two fastest full distance 8Ks. His best effort was a season beginning 35:03 at the Run for the Dream 8K. That was only good for eighth in this national class referendum. (Note: the age group was 60-69 and only one of the runners ahead of him was local.)
Noone was most effective at Bluemont Park where he raced three times. His only second place finish came there with 10-year age groups in 21:37. In August he improved to win in 21:07, nearly eclipsing his 21:06 at the National Press Club 5K.
Third place Jim Becker had five age group wins, two of them in the top 20 times. The Vince Tantillo/Jack Barr Memorial 5K win was timed at 21:37. Next in line was Ben Dyer. His Run for the Dream 8K in 36:15 was amazingly only 11th place in that race. With the 21st fastest time in this division, Jim Bell takes fifth at the Charlottesville Father's Day 4 Mile with his 29:13.

AS Run After the Women 5K 22:30, 10K = 46:56
Staying consistent is always hard. It is even harder as runners get older. A couple years ago Gerry Ives came out of racing retirement to win the division. Last summer John Elliott won it all but has been not been running since he ran at Pike’s Peek. John Benkert has been in mothballs for most of the last decade but in the spring he revived himself at the Clyde’s 10K in 47:36. Now, he had a real shot at the summer title if he could avoid injury.
He roared through the division starting with three 5Ks getting faster each race, culminating with a 22:30 5K in Annapolis. All were faster than everyone else. The division shrank to 12 runners with 4 of the top 5 just turning 70.
Gerry Ives made the first move, racing the competitive Run for the Dream 8K in 38:16. That was ahead of Collin Winston’s Yorktown Independence Day 8K at 38:57 but he was just getting started. Robert Wright ran the holiday weekend Yorktown Freedom 5K in 23:48 to snatch fifth place from Duane Lougee and his Elizabeth River Run 10K in 49:45.
Then, in August, when smart money says to stay indoors, Winston bolted to the runner-up spot at the Coast Guard Day 5K in 23:05. In late August Jack Pitarra ramped up his game, running the fifth fastest race at the Too Hot to Trot 10K in 48:20.

Autism Speaks 5K 24:52, 10K = 51:52
This division of “retiring” runners continues to grow with 26 qualifiers. Bob Gurtler “retired” earlier in the year after racing more than 100 races in 2010. This summer alone he had 36 races with 17 age group wins. The man was everywhere.
Maynard Weyers churns home to a win at the Run for the Door 5K.
Meanwhile Skip Grant quietly stepped up the first week of June with an unbeatable Capital Crescent 5K in 25:10. A month later he won the division racing the Autism Speaks 5K in 24:52. One week later at 79, George Yannakakis raced the Lake Montebello 5K in 25:46 to show he was not yet done in the division. It also moved Chris Catoe and his 54:34 at the Elizabeth River Run 10K back to third place.
Maynard Weyers takes fourth place, racing the Springfield 5K in 26:51 with Alan Rider racing two flat, fast 10Ks to round out the top five.

80 & Older Men
Appalachian Power Festival 5K 29:05, 10K = 1:00:40
At 86, John Hosner still dominates the 80 and older runners, although he slowed nearly a minute and a half from last year. His friends say he likes to hunt more than run so often he only gets a single race per season.
Jack McMahon is still in his first year in the division so he dominated the qualifiers with all seven of his races faster than anyone else. He ran in both of the top competitive 8Ks run this summer. The first day of the period he raced the Run for the Dream 8K in Williamsburg that featured all the greatest runners in the nation. He ran a very credible 52:41 but was met by a buzz saw from legendary Lou Lodovico, 87, of Ellwood City, PA who astonished with 49:12. Lodovico is one of only seven racers to ever beat their age (fewer minutes than years) at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Miler.
In July, McMahon ran the Rockville Rotary Twilight race where he cruised home on this hilly course in 49:11. That was ten minutes faster than former champion Nainxiang Xie, 84, could manage this year.
