High school track-and-field teams ready for postseason competition

Track-and-field seasons are wrapping up in coming days across the metro area for the 2025-26 high-school year with outdoor championship meets on district, conference, region and state levels.

Starting this week, girls and boys teams will compete in district and conference events, with region and state championships to follow.

In Virginia, Liberty District and National District meets are May 13-15 at Wakefield and Mount Vernon high schools, respectively. Concorde District and Patriot District meets are May 20-21 at Chantilly High School and Lake Braddock Secondary School, respectively.

Qualifiers from those four districts advance to regional meets May 28-29 at South Lakes High School and Lake Braddock, respectively.

The Cardinal District meet for Prince William high school teams is May 12-14 at Woodbridge High School. Those individuals who qualify then will participate in the Region 4 meet May 28-29 at Mountain View High in Stafford.

Finally, the season and year-ending Virginia High School League’s Class 5 and 6 state meets for those teams is June 5-6 at Todd Stadium in Newport News.

For some Virginia teams, conflicting Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (held at Good Counsel School in Maryland) and Division I state (held at Fork Union Military Academy in Fork Union) meets are held the same dates but miles apart May 15-16.

That situation has existed for years, with the two organizations unable to resolve the issue.

As a result, WCAC private-school teams from Virginia have to make the decision of which meet to attend. Usually, WCAC teams skip the state and participate in the conference meet.

In Maryland, public high-school teams will participate in the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Associations state meet May 21-23 at the Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex in Landover.

The WCAC Maryland private-school teams will compete in that meet May 15-16 at Good Counsel.

In the District of Columbia, the biggest public-school meet is the District of Columbia State Athletic Association Championships May 20-21 at Gallaudet University.

One postseason private-school meet that already has been completed was the annual Virginia State Catholic Championships, held May 9.

The host St. Paul VI Catholic girls and boys high-school teams from the Chantilly area won the titles, with Arlington’s Bishop O’Connell Knights second in each.

The Bishop Ireton Cardinals squads from Alexandria also had strong showings, with the girls fourth and the boys fifth.

The five standouts for the Paul VI boys were highlighted by sophomore Cooper Colcombe. He won the 400-meter dash (48.54 seconds) and high jump (6-feet, 4-inches), was second in the long jump and third in the 100.

Christian Rutland won the long (22-5 1/2) and triple (42-9) jumps. Nick Saitta won the 3,200 (9:52.13). Brandon Morrow won the 800 (1:59.68) and was second in the 1,600) and Keyon Johnson was second in the 100 and fourth in the 200.
