Robinson girls win outdoor Class 6 Va. track-and-field championship

Led by some strong running performances, the Robinson Rams capped a standout girls high-school track-and-field 2026 campaign by winning a second state championship.

The Rams ended the spring season by capturing the Virginia High School League’s Class 6 state title in Newport News. Robinson’s team point total was 56.5, just a half point more than runner-up North Stafford.

The outdoor state title was Robinson’s first in program history.

A couple of months earlier, the Robinson girls captured their first big title by finishing first in the 2026 Class 6 state indoor championship.

At the outdoor state meet, Robinson scored the large majority of its points in multiple running events.

One of those runners leading the way was junior sprinter Olivia Jones. Her biggest accomplishment was winning the 400-meter dash in 55.42 seconds.

Also, Jones was second in the 200 in 24.41 and third in the 100 in 11.98. Overall, she singlehandedly scored 24 team points for her performance.

The Rams’ other event race winner was sophomore Petra Gruendel in the 1,600 in 4:50.1. She also was 12th in the 800.

Junior distance runner Alexandra Bird finished sixth in the 1,600 and seventh in the 3,200, junior Isabella Willard was ninth in the 1,600, and junior Karina Bird was fifth in the 3,200 and 16th in the 1,600.

In addition, freshman Juliet Lord was 15th in the 3,200 and freshman Claire Andresen was 12th in both the 1,600 and 3,200.

In relay races, Robinson’s 4×800 unit of Gruendel, Willard, Alexandra Bird and Karina Bird finished fourth and the 4×400 was 12th.

Scoring in the field events for Robinson was senior Haley Trieu with a third in the pole vault at 11-feet, 6-inches. In the long jump, junior Joy Okonta was 12th, and senior Sydney Tubbins was 16th in the triple jump.

Many of those same athletes helped Robinson win the Class 6 state indoor championship during the winter.

For North Stafford, senior Sascha Cotton and sophomore Caidyn Jones were the top performers.

Cotton was second in the long jump, fifth in the 200 and sixth in the 400, and she ran on the winning 4×100 relay (46.64).

Jones won the long jump (19-11.5) and was second in the high jump at 5-6.

Other runners on that winning relay were senior Leila Cotton, junior Gabrielle Estes and sophomore Ivana Anane.

Individually, Leila Cotton finished fifth in the 100, and freshman Silease James was fifth in the shot put and eighth in the discus.
