With a couple of months of regular-season action in the books, the postseason has begun for metro-area high school and college cross-country teams.
Upcoming high school meets are held locally at different venues, with most college postseason competitions taking place out of the area.
This coming weekend — on Friday, Oct. 30 and Halloween day, Oct 31 — a number of conference college meets will be held.
The George Washington University men’s and women’s teams will participate in the Atlantic 10 championships at Pole Green Park near Richmond on Halloween. The George Mason University squads also will compete in that meet.
George Washington warmed up for the Atlantic 10 meet by first running in the Oct. 17 Eastern College Athletic Conference meet at Bethpage State Park in New York. A highlight of the meet was a runner-up finish in the women’s race by George Washington junior Hadley Mahoney.
As a result of her finish, Mahoney was chosen as the school’s Student-Athlete of the Week. In the race, she recorded a personal-best time of 20:21.2, marking the third-fastest 6K performance in program history. Through four meets this season, Mahoney has placed in the top five in every race.
The American University cross-country teams will run in the Patriot League championships in Lewisburg, Pa., on Oct. 31.
Also on Halloween, Marymount University teams will run in the Atlantic East meet in Milton, N.Y., and the Catholic University squads compete in the Landmark Conference meet in Lock Haven, Pa.
On Friday, Oct. 30, the Georgetown University men and women will be in action at the Big East Championships near Richmond; the University of Maryland women will run in the Big Ten meet in Madison, Wisc.; and the Howard University teams compete in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championships in Cary, N.C.
The University of the District of Columbia women participate in the East Coast Conference meet Saturday, Nov. 7, in Rochester, N.Y.
Maryland and UDC do not field men’s cross-country teams.
On the high school circuit, region-championship meets are scheduled at different venues and on various days this week, after many district championships were held a week ago.
Some of the district team champions in Northern Virginia were Yorktown, Falls Church, South Lakes, Robinson, Patriot and Colgan on the girls side and Oakton, Langley, Lake Braddock, Colgan and Patriot for the boys.
Eleanor Roosevelt won boys and girls Prince George’s County titles in Maryland.
In the private-school Washington Catholic Athletic Conference championships, The Heights won the boys title and St. John’s the girls.
In Northern Virginia, Occoquan Region and Northern Region meets are scheduled on Oct. 28 at Burke Lake Park, and Prince William County teams hold their region meet Oct. 29 at Willowmere Park in Stafford.
