For the Washington Running Report
Truth be told, of all the races held on the turn-of-the-year weekend, this one offers the most adventure. Through the years, the wacky weather has been anything from a warm but heavy rain to a blistering cold wind chill where hiding on the down side of one of its many hills is actually a plus. Or perhaps we could have a storm of the century as we did at the start of 2010 where no one even dreamed of trying to leave the house. The voting is in and this year’s sunny, windless day with close to sixty degrees of warmth has been chosen for the race’s official weather.
December had been mild but when the sun continued to shine on the New Year many people still had time to head down to Ida Lee Park and sign up for the 10K that started at 10:40 or the 4K fun run that started twenty minutes before that. The 4K was an untimed event but when the race announcer started the event, about 400 happy people bounded down and across the opening field. Most of them looked as if they were going for a fast time. As is custom when the 10K starts, runners will begin meeting returning 4K runners near the bottom of the ¼ mile hill. This year the start was rushed so we could get going before the 4K winner (and he did receive an award) crossed the starting line.
Runners were advised that the course was still a little damp and with the warmer weather the way would be soggy. The course, however, was very solid . . . for a cross country course. After bounding down the hill runners briefly take a road toward the first of many hills. The tree-lined country road is just dirt but the footing was not bad. Just before the second mile runners crisscross between the farm buildings at the crest of the hill. From there, runners snake down the long hill to the bottom of the course. Then, joy of joys, they added gravel to the paved roads and the climb back up to mile four was made without ever looking up. The crews at the water stops cheered us on, perhaps amazed that we made it to the top. The day was so wonderful. Many of the runners come year after year, not for fast times but to enjoy a fun course to start the year.
Course record holder Abiyot Endale (32:24 – 2011) which he pilfered from runner-up Aaron Church who produced the event’s fourth fastest time (33:05 – 2011), were absent. Matt Maline (above) had been third in a swift 33:55. This year, with no one to chase and a light challenge behind him, he coasted to victory in 35:02. William Bylund finished the final climb a little more than a minute later in 36:27. Matt Woods produced the third place time in 36:54. Most runners are at least two minutes slower than on a road 10K.
Kevin Lynch (left) was top master last year in 39:01. This year he aged up to the 45-49 division and won again, this time in 39:36. Grandmaster Bruce Halpin, 55, ran 41:50 last year which would have been nifty this year as William Clem, 52, was tenth overall in 41:52. Alas, he ran 42:02. Still, with generous five year age groups both runners went home with first place awards.
Malcolm Senior, 61, proudly set the event age group record with 42:42 last year. This year he again coasted to victory by a mile.
Bill Stahr, 51, ran five races for the holiday weekend for 146 races in 2011 and three already for the New Year.
For more than a year Bill Joyce, 67, has been not been racing. He comes out to the races looking on longingly. Today he renewed his racing with a very solid 49:23. He modestly started 16 seconds behind the leaders. When told, “He’s back!” he demurred with, “Well, not yet.” Later that evening I spoke with Ronnie Wong, 65, and advised him that he would be looking over his shoulder very soon. He had already seen the results as well as the last two 5Ks run by Jason Page, 66, another returning champion. Last year John Elliott, 73, was disappointed by his 50:34 even though it was an event record. This is not a fast course. Doug Morris, 73, (below) was not far behind in 52:30. This year Morris rambled home in 52:23 but his net time was 51:04.Doug, you are an elite runner who belongs at the front of the starting line.
Many racers ran more than one race on this weekend, perhaps it is easier when the races start later in the day. Six of the top ten women were forty or older. Heather Schaffer, 40, of Potomac falls, VA (left) led the way in 44:26. Young Zanny Ludtke, 18, was next in 45:45, followed quickly by four runners from Leesburg. Mandana Mortazavi, 48, took third place with a gun time of 46:38. She had the closet time toward a new age group record. (46:30).Mandana, you must also start closer to the front (net time of 46:32). After all you did when you were fourth overall at the Running in Hope 10K just the day before in 43:05.
Karen Young, 43, also had five races for the weekend for 144 races for 2011. She raced her 49th 10K in the morning of the 31st. Sunday morning she proudly announced, “I got my Blank last night.” The Blank is an award given to runners in the 50 Plus club who race 50 or more races in a single distance. Naturally she started the year up again with a 10K in the morning followed by a 5K in the afternoon on Sunday. “Toward the end I looked up ahead of me and saw a lot of people walking. I didn’t think I was going that slow,” said Young after the race. Young is often a Ranked Runner.
Jacqui Hanson, 41, also needed to start closer to the front. She finished top in her division with 46:41 but started twenty seconds behind the leaders. Tenth place Carole Jones, 54 (below), was top grandmaster in 48:37. Next year when she turns fifty-five she might just speed past the event record of 50:23 set by Heather Sanders in 2011.
At the awards ceremony, 75-year-old Patricia Cuff was tops in her division. The awards were announced old to young. When we got to the 45-49 age group, there was another Patricia Cuff (junior?). Yes, she was the daughter. Running is for families. Ecris Williams, 71, did not make the race for the first time in the 14 runnings of the event. She still hold records in three divisions.
Before and after the race Dave Berry, who travels up from South Carolina each year, was entertaining the crowd with his music, much of it from the sixties and seventies. The youngsters enjoyed his oldest song, the Hokey Pokey.
The joy of this event is that when you finish there are rows of chairs in a heated auditorium with indoor plumbing. There was plenty of bottled water and lots of hot coffee and cocoa. Bagels with cream cheese as well as bananas are laudable runners’ foods. Even better was the scores and scores of fresh baked giant cookies from Vie de France.
Always your fastest race of the year and for most the best.

Out of the heat of the late spring furnace, the first weekend of summer grew a rose of a day. Late June is certainly warm and sunny as a summer day but with a cool breeze, making the inaugural 5K and 10K races a charm. The course is flat and fast with nearly all of the final mile a gentle downhill swoop to the finish. Nestled just a few yards from busy Leesburg Pike but well off the beaten path where runners saw next to none of the motor vehicles to compete for the domination of roads.
In today’s running world, women are coming out in greater numbers, usually about 60% of the field. More and more the courses are getting tested by runners who have no plans at a glorious tape breaking at the finish. They want to try their stuff surrounded by hundreds of other similar-minded people in a controlled environment.
Ringing in Hope got underway last New Year’s Eve with a 10K and a 3K and had a successful nearly 1000-runner event. For June they followed up the success by lengthening the shorter race to the most popular distance, the 5K.
Both races got underway at the same time and for the first mile of the race, competitors had to guess who was in which event. At Fincastle Road the journey split at a well marked point and the 10K continued on a long and winding road that goes to who knows where. I was not worried about it. I was doing the 5K.
Before the race started the presumptive favorite of the 10K race was Aaron Church. Church(left) had won the submasters title in the Winter Runner Ranking and if anything was getting faster throughout the spring. He was easily recognizable dressed =PR= black with bright white compression leggings. He seemed awfully calm at the start, while nearby Axel Tarnvik was racing his engines ready to blast over the ChronoTrack starting mats.
Tarnvik, 18 (photo below), had come in second overall last week at the Race with Dad 5K in 16:55 just behind Andrew Ciafalia’s 16:47 with Ramsay Wilson, at 39 more than twice his age, pushing him from behind with 17:03. When the Redskins Hogettes led the start with a whistle, Tarnvik took off down the side road in a rush.
The experienced Church must have guessed that he was competing in the 5K and patiently followed right off his heels. Church was coming off an impressive win at the PRR Twilight 4am two weeks earlier in 20:25. In that race he ran through the first two miles a step to the rear of a pack of seven top runners. He polished them all off in time for a leisurely final run to the finish line.
By the time these two runners hit the turn, it had to be clear to both that they would scorch their respective races. Still, both runners keep the afterburners going. Tarnvik jetted to an impressive 16:41 to set the standard on the new course, winning by nearly three minutes. In second place, John Eterno was left to deal with third place Dan Eddy. Eddy, who just turned 60, was almost as old as all of the other three of the top four racers. He sparkled with a rare-for-that-age sub 20:00 to take third.
In the fifth spot was a racer known for his 10K. Bill Stahr had run 78 of them in 2009. He said he decided to run the 5K because he had to get to work earlier today. Speculation was that this was only his second race back from nearly two weeks away from his running addiction. After all he has already run 72 races this year, with 28 5Ks and 24 10Ks before the All Star Break.
The women’s race was more sublime. Masters runner Kathy Hoenig had stolen the Ashburn Village 5k race for the second year in a row back in May with a solid 21:20. Two weeks later she won her age group and was second overall at Herndon Festival 5K in 21:02. She knew she would need a faster time for another triumph.
Karen Haddon, 25, of Aldie, VA (photo left) had that faster time, chasing after the seventh fastest man and winning in 20:56. Hoenig middled her two previous races with a very nice 21:20 to hold off 19-year-old Becca Kassabian for the runner-up spot. Danielle Newcome, 34, was from the fourth different decade, looking real good with her 21:45 placement.
As the crowd looked on with 5K runners continually sweeping in, eyes were pealed for the white socks of Aaron Church. Often slower runners make a courageous charge at the end of their race, looking quite fast. Still, there was no mistaking Church’s loping stride as he eased through and past the late 5K finishers.
He looked a little puzzled when he was urged to sprint to the finish. After all he had this race in the bag by the first mile. Then he saw the clock tick over to 33:02. Sometimes the competition dictates the pace. At the start of the year, he had to push to peel off Robbie Wade to win the winter Ringing in Hope in 32:14 on a similar type of course. Pumped from that, he charged out hard on the mostly cross country Rotary Resolution 10k the next day in an excellent 33:05, just off his event record of 32:49 from 2009. Still he was thumped by the record setting 32:24 run by the spring Runner Rankingschampion, Abiyot Endale.
Today he won by more than a half mile, though well off his planned 5:05 mile pace. Next, Jeff Kuzma, 39, of Sterling came charging through in a very credible 35:49. Third place Frank Spicer, 19, had a battle. With his 37:51 he was just ahead of the third submaster, Rob Meadows, who ran 37:58. Spicer’s dad, also a Frank, turned in a nifty 48:01 for second in his age group, though Reeves Westbrook, 61, (photo left)was the top grandmaster in 46:33. Alan Rider, 75, won his division uncontested in 56:43 but noted that he was ahead of everyone older than 65.
Sarah Bard had just finished fifth at the competitive PRR Twilight 4 mile in 25:41. Today she would not be denied. She was seventh overall, topping the women in a solid 40:24. Melissa Saunders, 19, was the runner-up a quarter mile back in 42:11. After that, the sun was making it a bit warmer and the pace slowed down a bit. Nicole Prietti was third in 46:15. The top master was Brooke Alsamman in 49:17.
Coming in right behind her was Karen Young who turned 43 on the last day of spring. Young matched her 28 5K races with her 28th 10K of the year. Her 79 races leave her just shy of the 82 raced so far by the region’s prolific racing master Ted Poulos (82).
Black Tie catering served snacks on a platter to finishing racers. The huge parking lot has more than enough room for the race to double in size. At the far end of the lot there was a live band and a moon bounce. Awards were given three deep in five year age groups.

Christine Hackman (#520) and Joanna Russo (#512) battle down the final stretch.
One day before the clocks go back, nearly five hundred runners descended on West Potomac Park for the 2nd Annual Run Geek Run 8K. With overcast skies the race was still a little dark as it got [button-red url=”http://old.runwashington.com/results.htm” target=”_self” position=”left”] Results [/button-red]underway. Runners charged down Ohio Drive headed for Hains Point. Last year’s masters winner Bill Bray (44) of Fairfax, VA was eighth overall in 28:43. This year he pulled away from everyone early to win solidly in 28:08.
[button-red url=”http://old.runwashington.com/news/2201/” target=”_self” position=”left”] Photos[/button-red]He really did not seem in a real hurry at the end as the closest competition came from Alex Caudana (27) of Arlington, VA in 29:38. Adam Pignatelli (32) of Washington, DC was next in 29:48 but seemed content with third. Fourth place Eric Sonnenschein (36) of Washington, DCV could definitely hear the footsteps of fifth place Matthew Broaddus. Broaddus finished in 30:01 just four seconds behind.
The top three overall were placed by gun time. The age group winners got their places with ChronoTrack net time. Brooaddus had the second fastest net time in 29:29 but got a late start. Surprisingly last year’s event record holder Peter Silverman did the same thing, starting 45 seconds late. He did beat runner-up Pat Murphy to the tape 26:16 to 26:31 anyway.
Last year Laurel Jefferson (23) of Bethesda, MD set the standard, just breaking the 6:00 pace in 29:43. This year Mary Davison (36) of Bristow, VA finished eighth overall running with the lead men for a commanding 31:06 victory. Third place Emily Reuter (29) of Arlington, VA hurried after runner-up Elyse Braner (25) of Washington, DC, falling just short 33:46 to 33:55. She probably did not know how close grandmaster Alison Suckling (54) of Arnold, MD (in photo) was as she closed to 34:00 at the finish. With about 150 meters she pulled alongside Michael Cannon (in photo), second 50-54 in 34:08. She planned an even pace with a sprint at the end and left him in the dust. Cannon a mega racer was running his 55th race of the year. Perhaps he was a little tapped out as he had run three 5Ks last weekend. Earlier in the year he had run the Van Metre 8K in 31:52.
Bill Stahr of the Plains, VA may have been a little confused having run so many 10Ks from West Potomac Park. He is gunning for the record for 10Ks in a year; with 65 already he needs just five more. Today he ran race #124 in 32:13, nearly matching his best for the year (31:57) run on the hot and hilly Rockville Twilight 8K. It netted him the second place in the division. His award was picked up by his hometown mayor, Robert Gurtler. Gurtler (74) will soon be a regular ranked runner when he joins the 75-79 division in February. For now he finished second in the 70-74 division for his 108th racing adventure of the year.
Patricia Zerfas (47) of Kensington, MD is hard to please. She ran an excellent 34:48 to top her age group but when asked about her race she replied, “It was terrible.” Maybe that is why she runs so fast. Betty Blank (56) of Falls Church, VA (in photo – R) knew last week when she took top masters at the Race for World Peace 5K in 21:50 that she would be here today. She had won the grandmaster at Geek last year in 34:03, which would put her right on Suckling’s (in photo – L) heels. The two have traded wins for the last half dozen years. This year Blank throttled back to finish tops in the 55-59 in 35:16. Tops in the 60-64 division Gretchen Bolton (64) of Bethesda, MD missed a ranked time by 15 seconds in 49:11, though her net time was 48:47.
Paul Bousel (56) Alexandria, VA knew he would pulverize last year’s best time of 48:08. He bolted away with the leaders for a fine 33:14. It was a good thing he did as Tom Nolan (57) of Kensington, MD was not too far behind in 34:36. Michael Wesbecher (61) of Oakton, VA belied his age and finished soon after in 34:43.
For the older guys, John Churchman (66) of Arlington, VA was terrific in 37:47. Ralph Bayrer (70) of Washington, DC missed the Ranked Runner cutoff time by 21 seconds in 44:45. Larry Dickerson (78) of Burke, VA is still tough in 46:23. Nearly ten years older than him, Walt Washburn (87) of Vienna, VA finished his third race of the month and 18th of the year by winning his 80-99 division.
Throughout the morning there was rousing music for the runners. Many of the runners decided to run in costumes. There were scores of portajohns still hanging from last week’s marathon. After the race, there was plenty of food and a bit of candy as well. The awards went three deep in five year age groups with nice engraved medallions as mementos. We are looking forward next’s year race.
